Dracast LED500 overview

  • 1Description

Featuring a slimmer and lighter design at just 2.0 lb, the LED500 Silver Series Bi-Color LED Light from Dracast is an ideal choice for location work, interviews, and small sets where color accuracy, control, and flicker-free output are of major importance. Variable color temperature from 3200K-5600K or anywhere in between means that you can quickly match the prevailing ambient or artificial light balance with a simple twist of a knob while others are still applying filters. Dimming is equally convenient via another knob that adjusts the light intensity from 100-0% with negligible color shift. The low electrical draw of just 30W means a timely return on your investment.

The durable anodized aluminum frame is supported by an oversized, U-shaped yoke with locking knobs on each side and a standard 5/8" receiver. The LED500 can be used worldwide, powered by the included 100-240 VAC adapter in the studio, or by V-Mount batteries in the field. Four-way barndoors for contouring and control of the LED500's 45-degree beam angle are included. For protection during transport and storage, a carry case is included.

    Dracast LED500 reviews

LED500 Silver Series Bi-Color LED Light with V-Mount Battery Plate is rated 4.1 out of 5 by 49.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Great product, QC issues The product and build quality seems to be good. The QC, however, is not. I ordered two units. The first one had rust on the barn door, so I had it sent in because I was afraid what was under the hood if the outside is rusty. It was replaced by one of a different color (silver vs Blue) and with a different mount (plastic knobs vs metal), but it works. The next one I ordered had a few blown LEDs. I sent it in to be worked on. I wanted a matching set so that if I ever need to sell them, they match, but at this point I just want lights that work. The two week turnaround time to get things fixed (as well as the frequency of needing to be fixed) is the reason this is not a 5 star product, as I do think it is great for the money.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Not what I was expecting, but... I bought two of these lights when they were on sale, expecting the worst, but that doesn't mean I wont review them as such. I was expecting lights that I now know are actually about 1.5' big (these are smaller than 1'), and that would give sufficient light to at least act as a soft source. They are a soft source, too soft actually. If your planning to use these relatively close on photo shots, or just off frame; then these will do just fine. But I don't expect them to do much more. Again, they are small (although the frame is quite large), and there isn't a lot of power behind them. That being said, they do come with barn doors to push the light in the direction you want them. They do snug up against a tight corner just fine. While there is smaller cheaper lights that are comparable in power, they are often made of cheap plastic; well these aren't, and I'm sure I can drop them a few times without worrying too much about them. Suffice to say I'm keeping them. Sometimes you just need a small light that can run for a long time on battery power. Sometimes you need something more than plastic lights. Sometimes, all your really looking for is a kiss of light. Sometimes is more than often, always. Hell, they even come with fairly nice carrying cases! So go ahead, pick up at least one! Just note, the bi-color nature of this light means you will get the most intensity at 4400K, so if you need a bit more oomph at a different color temp, cut out a gel and use that; since dialing in the right color via the knobs will cut your light down a lot more.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Product and portable I had to do some video greetings for Christmas to show in Guyana from Guyanese living in New York. My first day of shooting was not good , most of the shots persons were bending their heads avoiding my on camera light. A friend of mine told me to get the Dracast light, I had never hear about this company before, so I headed down to BandH and purchased Dracast LED500 Bi-Color V mount, because I had 2 Sony V mount batteries from my old Sony DSR 250 camera which I no longer use. The next day of the shoot until the end everyone was looking and smiling into the camera, this light was so people friendly. I highly recommend this light.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Well Built, Decent Light Quality I got these lights on a sale from B&H. It was a half price deal. The lights are small and compact. The 500 LEDs are tightly spaced so the panel itself is quite small. It's well built and includes a diffuser, barn-doors, and carrying case. The light quality is decent. It's perfectly on par with the rest of the Dracast Silver Series LEDs. It's color is not as good as the Dracast Pro Series lights but good. I can't say that I love the control knobs. Instead of having one knob for intensity and the other for color, is simply one knob for daylight and one knob for tungsten. It works fine but isn't as easy to dial in to where you want it. Overall it's a well built product with good light quality that comes at a reasonable price.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from A few caveats... Just got this light through the recent B&H DealZone offer. The light seems to be very good in many ways. It's quite sturdy and the hardware is good quality. The light quality is good. The usual caveat of a bi-color light is of course that it only achieves maximum brightness when both the daylight AND tungsten bulbs are turned all the way up. This color mix may not be what you wish to use though. So, you give up brightness for the flexibility of light temperature. That was expected, and the light seems pretty bright for its size. I was surprised by the size of the light. Yes, it is approx. 10 inches square as advertised, but be warned that this includes the yoke and its protruding parts. The actual size of the light emitting area is 7 7/8 inches by 6 1/2 inches. Not quite what I expected. The diffusion panel has a slot to slide into, but there is not an adequate stop to hold it in place. If you move the light, it will almost certainly slide around and have to be put back in place. It does ship in a box with foam - foam just like the photo at B&H and on the company web site. It does ship with a case, but the foam won't fit in the case like it does in the product photo. The case is just barely larger than the light itself, so even if I cut the foam down to fit, it will be so thin as to provide almost no protection. And the case is not as deep as shown either. I have some 1/2 inch foam layers from a Pelican case, so will probably just cut those to fit and layer the light in between them. So, good light brightness for its size, good hardware, but smaller than expected, some design misses, and a not-as-advertised case. At the DealZone price it's a great light, but if I'd paid full price for this, I would have returned it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very impressed I wasn't expecting much at this price point. However I was pleasantly surprised. The construction appears to be solid and well built. These lights are not 1x1. They're compact. But they're powerful enough for a small interview setup. The bi-color adjustment is accurate and very convenient. It comes with a heavy diffuser panel that slips behind the bard doors (another plus) and is adequate for a quick setup. The small size is perfect for travel. If I were traveling and could only take one instrument, I'd take two of these (hey, they're smaller as one larger light panel or Arri 300 or 650)

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Smaller then advertised The light is advertised as a 10x10 panel. Well it's actually 8.5x6.5. Still it is nicely built and is just a tad bit brighter then my generay 360 bi colour. Like the last review, if this was not a deal of the day I would not be happy. But for the price it will still be a nice light for the kit. At about 8 feet using my lumu light meter. With both tungsten and daylight at full I was around 700 lux. With my aputure LS1s, well it was about 4000 lux, 35% got me down to the brightness of the dracast.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Compact, great for tight shots/product photos I scooped this up as part of a Deal Zone. It's a small LED panel (around 10 x 10, without the yoke), so don't expect to use it for any significant fill. I've found it's better used for tabletop setups such as a product shoot. It also could work as a nice hair light if mounted overhead, but the barn doors are a little too small for controlling spill. The bi-color is helpful in balancing with the rest of your light kit. Bottom line - I'm rating this a 4 because it's a good light for the purpose and is super travel friendly. I certainly wouldn't build your kit around this light alone, but it's a good tool to have.
