Dracast LED1000 overview

  • 1Description

Featuring a slimmer and lighter design at just 4.0 lb, the LED1000 Silver Series Bi-Color LED Light with V-Mount Battery Plate from Dracast is an ideal choice for location work, interviews and small sets where color accuracy, control and flicker-free output are of major importance. Variable color temperature from 3200K-5600K or anywhere in between means that you can quickly match the prevailing ambient or artificial light balance with a simple twist of a knob while others are still applying filters. Dimming is equally convenient via another knob that adjusts the light intensity from 100-10% with negligible color shift. The low electrical draw of just 58W means a timely return on your investment.

The durable aluminum frame is supported by a sturdy, U-shaped yoke with locking knobs on each side and a standard 5/8" receiver. The LED1000 can be used worldwide, powered by the included 100-240 VAC adapter or by optional V-Mount 14.8V batteries. Barndoors are provided for contouring and control of the LED1000's 45-degree beam angle. A carry case is included.

    Dracast LED1000 reviews

LED1000 Silver Series Bi-Color LED Light with V-Mount Battery Plate is rated 3.7 out of 5 by 67.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Good light with several flaws. Accurate color. Not so powerful but enough for my needs. Ridiculous yoke as you cannot tilt forward and down to light my interviews in the vertical position. If you put the light horizontally, it can't tilt down either. The image shown when I bought it had the center yoke. Basically received different yoke other than what I ordered. Would send it back but it is the second different Dracast I've bought and it costs a lot of money from Canada to send to the U.S. I guess I'm stuck with it. Will be calling Dracast and B&H to discuss this. Very disapointed with Dracast.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good price but some differences from the Pro line I previously purchased the LED500 Pro, and a few differences should be noted between the 'Silver' and Pro line in case it's not clear but explains the relatively cheaper Silver pricing on the 1000. The Pro comes standard with a softbox, honeycomb, and light stand. The Silver does not. The Pro lets you choose your temperature with 1 knob, and control power with the other. The Silver gives you a tungsten temp/power control and a daylight one, and then you have to blend them manually. To get say, 4800, you may have to break out the calculator. Pro has XLR power input. Silver has standard non-XLR. Doesn't feel as secure when connected and doesn't lock. Pro softbox can just slide on; the Silver has 6 finger knobs to unscrew. Haven't received my softbox yet to try but appears it will be a bigger job to attach it. The Pro bag is much more sturdy and rugged.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great light: Mounting is a challenge This is a difficult review to write as there is good news and bad news. The good news is that the light itself is great, gives a nice bright uniform light source (with the diffusion in place) and works well either on V-mount battery or plugged in to wall power. I would definitely recommend the light for that reason. The bad news is the yoke. The yoke spans the short side on this light, which means the light's natural orientation on a stand, is vertical. Not so much of a problem, but the yoke arms are not long enough to allow the light to rotate through the yoke, so you cannot even get the light horizontal, never mind tilt it downwards - a serious design problem in my opinion. Ok, so there is the option to mount the light horizontally, with the yoke pivot points top and bottom on the light. There are several issues with this, the most obvious is that in this orientation you have no ability to tilt the light vertically, only swivel it horizontally (which you can do natively on your light stand anyway). A second problem for us is that in the horizontal position the yoke arms throw the center of gravity out 12 from the attachment point, putting a lot of torque on the mounting pin. While this is mostly OK when using a C-stand as your mount, it does not work at all when trying to mount the lights on a suspended ceiling scissors mount. Bottom line, we had to make our own horizontal yoke to replace the user-unfriendly factory one. (One final point - the threading of the mounting holes on the light are NOT standard 1/4-20, so none of the standard swivel mounts will attach to the lights either - go figure!)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just about perfect As a repeat customer of Dracast lights, I've been most impressed with the Silver Series lights as the best combination of durability, lightweight body, versatility, and brightness. I happened to see this newly redesigned Silver Series LED1000 at the NAB NY show and having toyed around with it at the show, I had to pre-order one directly through Dracast. The noticeable difference is that the all-metal construction is blue rather than silver, but the differences in this design are more than cosmetic. It comes with a new mounting device that allows for almost full rotation, which is brilliant for positioning the light at almost any angle and feels sturdy. I think this is an improvement over the past design which had a goose neck mount that is screwed on with the plate. Another great feature is the addition of an NP-F plate that can accommodate two Sony type NP-F batteries instead of a V-Mount battery. This is great news for someone like myself who would rather swap multiple NP-F camera batteries than purchase a pricier V-Mount battery and charger combo. As for the light quality itself, it is absolutely fantastic. Very color accurate, easy to dim, easy to change color, and a really nice form factor too.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from poor design, battery plate malfunction Previous dracast and arxtec lights have been great. This one is a dud. The yoke is too short to fit around the fixture so you can't point it down when in the vertical position. In the horizontal position its fine, but the balance is terrible, and you have to sand bag your stand or the light will fall over. None of the 6 vlock batteries I have from different manufacturers work well with the vlock mount on this light. You have to maintain constant downward pressure on the battery to keep the light on. If you don't, the light won't turn on, or will turn off spontaneously at any time. The first unit shipped to me had broken battery contacts, B&H did an excellent job replacing it, but the second unit I got was not much better. A waste of money.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Well built I just started using the light and my first impression is that it feels sturdy and looks nice. It is compact and smaller than I expected, which is nice for travel. It was nice that it brought the stand and was basically ready to use out of the box. The case could have been a little more cushioned and seems a little low end. I wasn't familiar with the V-mount batteries and was surprised to see they are so expensive. I am guessing they must be great batteries, but it will be a while before I purchase those. I like the light, so far. I liked it at the sale price, but would not have kept it at the full price of $1,000.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Overall great lights! I purchased two of these to use for a half day video shoot. One of them arrived defective; B&H promptly returned it with a working unit. Both of them worked out great for the shoot, and stayed on all day on max setting without overheating or other issues. The ability to change color temperature ended up being far more useful than I thought. The output of light is somewhat soft, and I prefer to add a scrim to soften the light further when lighting subjects. Only complaint is the yoke needs to be slightly longer! They stopped it just short of being able to clear the the lighting unit can't clear the yoke. This means it can't point downward on a standard light stand!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Incorrect DRACAST product images are confusing! As of Nov 2017 DRACAST has not provided BH Photo with updated images of this light. Even the DRACAST website does not feature the new control interface. I don't understand why because the new controls make these S-Series lights near perfect. I've been waiting for cost and quality of LED lighting to come together and it finally has with the S-Series lighting from DRACAST. There is now a dedicated control for Intensity (spelled wrong on the fixture) and a single dial for color balance from 3200k to 5600k. A digital readout auto switches to display the setting for the dial being adjusted. I have not tested the accuracy of the readout, but it's very nice to have as it was lacking in previous models. Complaints in other reviews have be addressed in this new model. The soft diffusion panel is now held in place by a pull tab on either side of the fixture (see photo). The U-bracket positioned horizontally allows the light to tilt down without issue. A hefty tripod stand with a weight bag is plenty to hold the light...C-Stand is not needed. The mounting bracket allows the U-Bracket to spin 360 and the locking handle is on spring for repositioning after its tightened. Additional mounting holes on the long sides (see photo) would allow for tilting in the horizontal position if you had a U-bracket big enough. When closed the light is very compact. Build quality is as professional as can be. I like being able to power the unit with the smaller NP-F970 batteries. We have plenty of the big Anton Bauer batteries but I'd rather not use them. Light output is very bright, in my quick initial testing I found the 60% setting just right for a single person interview key light. I've been in the business full time professionally since 1981, I highly recommend this product!
