    Seagate STDR4000900 reviews

4TB Backup Plus Portable Hard Drive (Silver) is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 125.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Drive, Great Price I ordered two of these puppies (just to have a redundancy). Now having 5 Seagate drives total I am satisfied with all of them. My oldest one is now about 6 years old. I take care of my drives and they seem to take care of me. These 4tb drives are being used to store all of my photos and videos, no longer do I keep any on my actual MacBook. One is used as a working drive while the other sits in a firebox as a backup that gets updated periodically. My only opinion is that they are pretty bulky for portable drives, however considering the storage amount and price point...doesn't bother me a bit! Again just my opinion..

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Bad power cable will kill the drive and lost everything The drive is fine, but the cable is really bad, it sticks out like a spike from the drive. So it catches things easily, Over time, it bends and the USB port bent out of shape and totally ruined. The drive without power is not going to do anything for you. Also before it totally kill the USB port, it would flick the power on and off that just corrupts the NTFS sectors like crazy. The sad thing is that this only happens as you have used it a few months and have accumulated a lot of files in the drive, one day all of sudden, you lost everything.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Broke after First Use The drive seemed simple enough. Plugged it into my MacBook Pro, followed instructions, erased the drive to allow Time Machine to do it's thing. As Time Machine does it's thing, a slight bump to my desk unplugs the USB connection. Darn, I guess I have to start over. But no! My MacBook can't find the drive. Went to the Genius Bar, and it didn't work with their computer either. Even tried previous versions of Mac OS X. Frustrated would be an understatement. Now I need to figure out how to erase the few GBs of data that DID transfer before I try to get my money back. Seagate, I'm not very happy with you.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Seagate 4TB Portable USB Hard Drive This little powerhouse is an excellent addition to anyone's set of PC or Tablet accessories. It's small footprint and 4TB storage capability is more than anyone could need. and when I am finished it can fit in my shirt pocket. The USB 3.0 is fast and the drive is very responsive for service up requests. The added bonus of the provided backup utility is also a great feature to ensure you keep an up to date backup of you important files of system mages as well. All in all this drive is very well priced and is well worth the price of admission, and it will supply you with lots of space in a very small footprint.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Working Running OpenMediaVault (OMV), I have all drives externally or internally powered EXCEPT this one. I plugged it the last USB 3.0 available, ran the setup in OMV (EXT4 capacity was properly reported), then proceeded to copy 28GB of a full season of a show (20 files of 1.2GB for each file). The copy operation ran consistent of 100+ MB/s, so far so good. If this drive fails in the next year, I'll update this post. Note: I haven't opened the casing as I usually do (being it appears glued together), but it is smaller than a 5.25 drive but bigger than an SSD. It weighs about the same as 2 laptop hdds (I'm suspecting there is 2 laptop hdds inside the casing).

Rated 1 out of 5 by from This thing failed on me and ended up losing a lot of data I have two Seagate 1TB hard drives that appear to work very well. I bought this one to be the big kahuna. A hard drive that would hold big files, old files; pretty much everything that I wouldn't have an immediate use for. I loaded everything onto it and put it in a desk drawer. When I plugged it back in to use it again a few months later, it took forever to load and then read me an error message about how it couldn't be read and would need to be rewritten. So everything that was on it was lost and it was hugely disappointing. I would strongly recommend not purchasing this product, as it failed its single purpose.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from not stable I bought several of these little drives, thinking that Seagate is a well-known manufacturer. The price point was very attractive, and so was the form factor. They have very low power usage, so they can be used with USB power only. I was getting read speeds of about 125 MB/sec down to 65 MB/sec in my tests. This I could live this (these drives are not build for speed). What I cannot live with is how unstable they are. With Windows (10 Pro) they sometimes disappear completely, requiring a reboot. I have also encountered empty folders that I know should have a lot of data in them. Reboot seemed to help once or twice, but this kept happening, and I am not at a point where I am facing real data loss. The computer is otherwise stable, so I have to blame it on these drives.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Poorly packaged in a bubble mailer envelope Fortunately, these two external hard drives actually work. The legal letter size bubble mailer envelope they arrived in had no further protective shock absorbing packaging, and the envelope looked like it had gone through World War Three and a few cataclysmic stampedes. Many of the bubbles in the envelope were burst, and there were scuff marks all over the mailer. I was certainly less than impressed with the negligent shipping of sensitive electronics. Thankfully the cameras I have had shipped to my address have received more attentive preparation for shipment.
