A prized focal length for portraiture, the FE 85mm f/1.4 GM from Sony is a fast, short-telephoto lens designed for E-mount mirrorless digital cameras. Characterized by its flattering perspective and fast f/1.4 maximum aperture, this lens is adept at isolation focus for shallow depth of field effects, as well as performing in low-light conditions. The optical design incorporates three extra-low dispersion elements to reduce chromatic aberrations and one XA (extreme aspherical) element, which significantly controls spherical aberrations for a high degree of image sharpness and clarity. Additionally, a Nano AR coating has been applied to limit ghosting and lens flare for increased contrast and color fidelity when working in strong lighting conditions. Pairing a bright f/1.4 aperture with a short-telephoto focal length, this 85mm lens is ideally suited for portraiture and other situations where focus control is paramount.

Sony FE 85mm f/1.4 GM Overview

Complementing the optical assets, this lens is also notable for its inclusion of an 11-blade circular diaphragm to produce smooth, soft-edged bokeh with selective focus imagery. For controlling focus, a linear SSM (Super Sonic wave Motor) is employed that is quick and quiet, and also lends more responsive control for manual focus operation. The lens also sports a dust- and moisture-sealed design to support shooting in inclement conditions and a dedicated focus hold button, AF/MF switch, and manual aperture ring lend further control while shooting.

As part of Sony's esteemed G Master series, this lens is designed to achieve notably high resolution and sharpness through the correction of a wide variety of spherical and chromatic aberrations. Additionally, these lenses feature robust and intuitive-to-handle physical designs to benefit both photography and cine applications.
A portrait-length prime designed for full-frame E-mount mirrorless cameras, this 85mm f/1.4 is also compatible with APS-C models where it will provide a 127.5mm equivalent focal length.
Fast f/1.4 maximum aperture benefits working in difficult lighting conditions and also offers a wealth of control over focus position when using shallow depth of field techniques.
One XA element is incorporated into the optical design, which features superior surface precision for effective control over astigmatism, field curvature, coma, and other spherical aberrations.
Three extra-low dispersion elements are featured in the lens design and help to reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing for improved clarity and color neutrality.
A Nano AR Coating has been applied to reduce surface reflections, flare, and ghosting for increased contrast and color rendering in strong lighting conditions.
A linear Super Sonic wave Motor autofocus system and internal focus mechanism provides quick, quiet, and precise autofocus performance and also contributes to more natural, intuitive manual focus control. An AF/MF switch is located on the lens barrel for tactile control over this setting.
A focus hold button is present on the lens barrel for intuitive tactile control and rapid access to select settings.
Physical aperture ring can be de-clicked for smooth, silent aperture switching to benefit video applications.
Dust- and moisture-sealed design better permits working in inclement conditions and rubberized control rings benefit handling in colder temperatures.
Rounded 11-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality when employing selective focus techniques.

I'm torn between this and the 135 GM 1.8 do any of you have both? Which one will give me the most versatility? Opinions welcome
Asked by: Tiggs
I have both and use them often when shooting live performances (music, theatre, and dance). Highly recommend going with the 85mm if you are looking at both and can only swing one right now. Def go with the 85mm 1.4 as a first choice. The 85mm and the 24mm 1.4 are my overall top favorites for lowlight. I also have the Sony Zeiss 1.4 50mm which rounds off the low light range killers. These four low light lenses are all I need in very low light. Cheers1 j

Does this lens works good for APS-C Sony E mount cameras obviously considering the crop factor?
Asked by: Anonymous
Yes; the Sony FE 85mm f/1.4 GM Lens with UV Filter Kit, B&H # SO8514GM77F, would be fully compatible for use on a Sony mirrorless camera using the smaller APS-C sensor. Compared to the same lens used on a full-frame camera, when used on the Sony camera with the APS-C sensor, the Sony FE 85mm f/1.4 GM Lens would simply have the equivalent angle of view of a 127.5mm lens used on a full-frame camera.

question

I was wondering if this Sony FE 85mm f/1.4 GM Lens besides using it as a portrait lens. How would it be to use this lens for street photography? Thank You!
Asked by: peter cologgi
This Sony fe 85 1.4 GM Provides outstanding color and its also very sharp if you get it to focus. But its a moody lens, difficult and slow to focus in low light and on moving objects, and it does not focus close up. It also looks huge on your camera, and weighs a lot, so not stealthy. Ive used the Sony fe Zeiss 35 2.8 and it is great, tiny, light, and focuses great, nice color, sharp, no weight. For travel I now use the Sony fe 24-240 which is really a great lens, much better than all the reviews, its sharp, color and focus are good and it is useful at all distances. Do I need to tweak my fotos a bit more in Lightroom with this 24-240? Yes, but its easy and so worth it. Hope this helped.
