Refined Telephoto Zoom

Boasting exceptional optics, intuitive handling, and outstanding speed in all aspects, the Sony FE 70-200mm f/2.8 GM OSS takes its place as a reliable, go-to telephoto zoom for professionals. A member of the G Master series, this 70-200mm delivers high sharpness alongside smooth, clean bokeh, and the bright f/2.8 constant maximum aperture and optical image stabilization also help to ensure sharp handheld shots in available lighting conditions.

G Master Optics

  • As part of Sony's esteemed G Master series, this lens is designed to achieve notably high resolution and sharpness through the correction of a wide variety of spherical and chromatic aberrations.
  • A constant f/2.8 maximum aperture offers consistent performance throughout the zoom range and also lends greater control over focus position for shallow depth of field techniques.
  • Nano AR Coating has been applied to reduce surface reflections, flare, and ghosting for increased contrast and color rendering in strong lighting conditions.
  • Rounded 11-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality when employing selective focus techniques.
  • Of the three aspherical elements incorporated in the lens design, one is an XA element with superior surface precision to effectively reduce astigmatism, field curvature, coma, and other monochromatic aberrations from imagery.
  • Four extra-low dispersion elements and two Super ED elements are featured in the lens design, too, and help to control chromatic aberrations and reduce color fringing for increased clarity and color fidelity.

Reliable Autofocus and Image Stabilization

  • Advanced double-linear and ring Super Sonic wave Motor system ensure fast, precise and accurate autofocus in both stills and video.
  • Floating elements system benefits image quality when working at the 3.15' minimum focusing distance with 0.25x magnification.
  • The lens barrel is equipped with three focus hold buttons and a focus range limiter switch to permit fast, intuitive operation of the lens while shooting.
  • Optical SteadyShot image stabilization helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake for sharper imagery when shooting handheld with slower shutter speeds. This stabilization system can also be combined with select camera's sensor-shift type image stabilization for more effective control of camera blur.
  • An OSS Mode switch lets you choose Mode 1 for general image stabilization that is suited to most types of shooting as well as a Mode 2 setting that is specifically intended to be used with panning movements.

Professional Build and Intuitive Handling

  • Dust- and moisture-sealed design better permits working in inclement conditions.
  • The front lens element features a fluorine coating to protect against smudges and dust from adhering to the glass surface.
  • A removable, rotating tripod mount permits quick switching from horizontal to vertical shooting orientations.
  • Included petal-shaped lens hood helps prevent flaring and has a filter access window for making adjustments to rotating filters such as polarizers and variable NDs.
  • Compatible with optional 1.4x and 2x teleconverters to further extend the effective focal length.

Sony FE 70-200mm f/2.8 GM OSS Reviews

I love this lens!

I bought the Sony FE 70-200 f/2.8 GM mk1 to pair with my A7SIII and I could not be happier with the focal range. From wildlife, portraits and street photography this has served me well so far. I love the internal zoom and how difficult it would be to get dust and debris inside the lens, that was actually a huge plus for me as I do live in a somewhat dusty house. Thanks B&H.

If you're looking for a blazing fast autofocus tracking lens with edge to edge razor pin sharp detail, this isn't it. If you're looking for one of the most fantastic portrait and fashion lenses with creamy lush subtle characteristics that renders almost painterly type qualities and colors, this is your ticket. It's a bit heavy, but that's the big wonderful glass inside, it's superb! Happy Trails, Dave

I am just a newbie to the photography world but I used this lens on my Sony A7 4 in South Africa on several safari's and it produced some amazing pics! It was my lens of choice on this adventure!!

Pros sharpens/zoom Cons weight

Was working in a low light environment with my subject being a good 20-30ft away and this lens sharpens was really good I didn't even have to change lens. The zoom is also nice when changing full body portrait to a torso to head portrait. The only Cons for me is the wieght since if using for a long period of time you can feel the weight of both the camera body and this lens. I purchased this lens 1.5 years ago and I've been carrying it in my photo backpack. I kept the light shield on the lens, and apparently carrying it on the plane last week, the first 1/2 inch of the lens sheared off. Looking at the damage the lens uses a pretty cheap plastic clip to hold it on. Tried to discuss with Sony, they were adamant that it was out of warrantee so paying for fix is out of pocket. Really unhappy with quality of Sony lenses.

This lens has worked flawlessly forc,e. I have just moved from cannon to Sony. This lens IS HEAVY compared to my cannon of the same length. The lens does not extend when all the zooming is done internally. Focus is fast and crisp With the lens not extending it makes it easier when I am carrying it around

question

This one (G Master) or that one (Sony G F/2.8 OSS II)... I use Sony A7R II and Sony A99! Sony G is an A-Mount, also E-Mount via adapter, but 500 dollars more... I don't know which has better IQ to grap some of those! Pros and cons
Asked by: Gustavo
The Sony FE 70-200mm f/2.8 GM OSS E-mount Lens has not yet been release, as it is a new item that was recently announced, and is not yet stated to begin shipping until July 29, 2016. As such, I have yet to see any lens testing from reputable testers to compare the optical quality of the two lenses. The newer Sony FE 70-200mm f/2.8 GM OSS E-mount Lens has 11 aperture blades for a more rounded aperture and bokeh (the A-mount lens used 9 blades), and also has more optical elements designed for more correction from aberration and to focus all light at a single point to increase sharpness, and also has a shorter minimum focus distance. The above are the comparisons from the lens' specifications released by Sony. Comparing the MTF chart, the newer Sony FE 70-200mm f/2.8 GM OSS E-mount Lens seems slightly sharper, especially when viewing the corner/edge performance. However, for a comparison in real-world testing, you would have to wait until the lens is released and available for testing.I will add one point; if you are using both A-mount and E-mount cameras, and you only want to have to purchase one lens, then the Sony 70-200mm F2.8 G SSM II would be recommended. While both are good lenses, you may use an adapter to use the A-mount lens on the smaller E-mount, but there is no adapter to use the smaller E-mount lens on the larger A-mount.

How would images taken with this lens and a 2x teleconverter compare with images taken from a 100-400mm Sony G lens?
Asked by: Mark
Both options would provide excellent image quality. However, having the FE 70-200mm f/2.8 GM OSS lens with the FE 2X Teleconverter allows you to shorten the range as needed by removing the teleconverter. With the FE 100-400mm lens, you’re stuck within a longer range unless you back up.
