Sony FE 2x Teleconverter Reviews

At first I hated it.

At first I hated it, but realized there is a steep learning curve to getting good results. It's not magically a new 2x lens, but a series of trade offs to double your zoom. I find the best results are ideally on a tripod, but always with silent shutter. Much cheaper than a 2x lens but not as capable. Good for well lit or tripod shots - mountains / flowers / bees / birds & the moon come to mind. Doubt it's usable for fast action sports. If you can get one used it's definitely worth it.

Big reach but you lose light

It works perfectly with the specified Sony lens and bodies I've used with A9 and A1 & the Sony 200-600mm for wildlife. In good light it provides amazing reach! The cost is two full stops feels like more so on a dark day or too late or too early it's going to be hard to use. This is why some of the pros buy that beautiful but very expensive Sony 600mm prime. I already had the 1.4TC and I'm glad I added this to my kit. I was shooting Elk during the day and had to work from a distance and the added reach really did help me get some great photos. It fits perfectly and the camera AF performance seems unaffected. It wasn't available for a while and I'm glad I can choose no TC, 1.4 or 2.0 when using my biggest lens.

2X the Fun

First time I've had a teleconverter. Really an awesome piece of equipment. Unfortunately it came after my trip, so I will have to wait to use it next month while camping. In checking it out when it came - it was a WOW. This will make a world of difference in getting up and close to animals, etc. in the wild..

Good for what it does

This works well with the 400mm/2.8 and 600/4.0 primes. Also the 200/2.8 II and 100-400mm, but remember you lose 2 stops of light and you are adding more glass in front of your sensor, so heat distortion, camera shake, wind and other factors will be exaggerated.

2X Tele for a more reach.

Had this unit for a couple weeks now and I can say it works as advertised with my new Sony 70x200 ver II. Hoped I could pair it up with my Sigma 100x400 but no such luck. Either way I can tell you the images are pristine and seem to maintain the integrity of the lens.

Poor quality when using A1 and 200-600 lens

The quality of the photos using this 2x converter with the Sony A1 and the 200-600 G lens is poor. I ordered a Sony 1.4 TC and it works fine. I hope Sony issues firmware update to improve the quality of the 2X TC.

Bought it for racecar track photography, but returned it after my first use at COTA. The lens sharpness plummeted to a level I could not accept. I was using it on my 70-200 2.8.

Not ideal on 70-200mm G

Even in ideal conditions (on tripod, indoors, stationary objects), this produced a terribly soft image in comparison to one taken without it. Settings were maintained to avoid any confusion using my sony 70-200mm g F/2.8 and either this is a defective item or it just simply doesn't perform adequately enough for me to be interested in keeping/using it.

Another compatibility question - does it work with a Zeiss batis 135mm 2.8 prime?
Asked by: Mitchel
I’ve never used the Batis, so I can’t give a direct answer. The front of the teleconverter always projects a little more than 1/3 of an inch into the back of whatever lens is attached to it, so unless the Batis has enough room for that projection at all focus settings, the two won’t be physically, mechanically compatible and could damage each other. Optical compatibility is an entirely separate question.

2x converter's doubles lens focal lengths, so your 200mm lens will become a 400mm with a light loss of 2 f/stops.

The teleconverter is compatible with both of the 70-200mm f/2.8 GM lenses. The "G" lens is a 70-200 f/4 which cannot use the teleconverter.
