Sony FE 2x Teleconverter Reviews

Not worth the purchase if using with a Sony 100-400mm lens

Purchased this 2.0 Teleconverter for use with my Sony 100-400mm GM lens expecting great things. Was highly disappointed in the photo's I get with it. Can never get a Sharp image, ALWAYS Blurry. So either I have a defective one, or they just don't do well with the 100-400mm lens. I did however, rent a 200-600 Sony lens and got very good results with it. So if you plan on using it for the 100-400mm, Save your money and don't. Get the 1.4x instead.

Slows down focus

It's great, but just a word of warning, AF takes longer. It has to hunt a bit more. This applies to the 2X converter (which I bought). I'm not sure if the 1.4X has the same issue.

2X and 1.4X SONY teleconverters very limited

Bought A7iv with 24-240 lens here and assumed that the teleconverters would give me a 480 tele. Thank heavens I read the Q&A here and used a fine toothed comb on the SONY site where the fine print reveals that the number of lenses compatible with the teleconverters are VERY LIMITED! A SONY rep Emailed me that my 24-240 was compatible which is not true. The lists of compatible lenses is not at all easy to find at SONY where even the compatible lenses are ALL listed with the footnote with some restrictions and none are listed as fully compatible, taking you to a list of compatible camera BODIES so I emphasize that the teleconverters must be compatible with the equipment in front of and behind. Some buyers scratched their lens trying to make the converter work on an incompatible lens. Caveats about the A7iv and SEL24240: very heavy (~3.5 lbs); maybe too sophisticated a camera for one who was previously familiar the A700; caught off guard by the resolution of the A7iv which is not fully appreciated in the Facebook and Instagram world where sensors the size found in phone cameras dominate. Standard enlargement of full frame images there yields fuzzy images whose detail is not appreciated until enlarged.... a lot. I will enjoy my new camera and lens eventually as I become a better photographer. I know, I know, the camera does not make the photographer. I'm staying with SONY and am becoming a smarter consumer.

Sony won't license to Sigma use of the e-mount to make their teleconverters which I assumed was to not detract from their sales but turns out that this teleconverter refuses to allow anything but manual focus on Sigma lenses

Exceptional, within reasonable expectations.

If you accept that these aren't for making really far away things closer, but rather making reasonably close things frame filling, then its a fantastic bit of kit. If it's too far to get a clean shot of with the 600mm straight out, this won't magically make that possible. Atmospheric interference, stray light, micro tremors... yeah, turning your rig into a telescope with a camera on it isn't optimal for long long distance. But if you're in that good range for the 600 and just want the subject bigger? Insanely good. Negligible IQ loss which is more than compensated for by the reduction, if not elimination, of cropping. On the 100-400, it is just pure magic all around. Yes, it makes it an f11, but... you have an 800 mil lens in a shockingly compact form. Just keep expectations where they should be and this won't disappoint.

Still getting use to it.

My use scenario is on a Monopod since much of my bird photography is not particularly sedentary. This means that, in this even at the short end of the 28 - 200mm f2.8; you need practice. I can live with the f5.6 aperture. Using Auto-focus and tracking is pretty much a requirement. It is producing the results that I expected. For landscape vistas, it works great.

This teleconverter is small, sharp, and does not impede the super quick Sony auto focus whatsoever. The perfect way to pack a 400mm without having to pack a 400mm!!

A 600mm lens for $697.00

I'm using a Sony a92 with the 70-200 Mark2 with the 2X. The camera functions that I use are: -Open to f5.6 (f2.8, other settings will work). -APC Mode (Custom button). -I then set another of my custom buttons to the Steady Shot Adjust. to Manual at 600mm By doing that, I can switch between the long lens and my other lenses at the push of a button as I switch lenses. I use small or medium tracking; I'm getting sharp images at the equivalent of 600mm which can still be cropped if necessary. FWIW: I've found that it still focuses pretty well even on Wide or Zone for moving subjects. Combined with setting on Mode 3 on the lens, it does improve the hit ratio a bit more. I personally think that, for me; it's a pretty good investment.
