Bescor MP-101 reviews

MP-1E Motorized Pan Head with Power Supply and Remote Extension Cable is rated 3.3 out of 5 by 16.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Yes we would buy more as needed. We have 3 units that are used to control cameras at lectures and concerts. Operators may be 15 to 100 feet from the camera. The price is great for this capability. I am a robotics engineer and considered making our own units; but when pricing supplies needed and assembly time, the MP-1E was most cost effective. We have had a problem with an inoperative remote controller which B&H quickly replaced. Our recently acquired third unit has a problem with the female socket for the insertion of the controller cable that requires special handling by the operator. Also the controller is really cheap but usable. I am not impressed with Bescor quality control.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Sort of OK I use this mounted on a lighting pipe at the rear of the theatre with a Canon XA 35. Although the instructions say in requires a 1 amp 5 volt power supply it ships with a .5 amp supply. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I am currently running it off batteries and it works very well. I will replace the power supply after I finish the current job. I expect the added strain from all the wires I have connected may be the reason the .5 amp supply is inadequate. SDI, Audio Left and Right, remote control, Camera Power, and MP-1E power. I would like wider control over speed but I picked the cheapest device and for the money it is great. I would recommend it with wornings.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great for unmanned light camera I was looking for a solution to put an unmanned camera into a live switching situation with the movement needed to follow the speaker and this works perfectly. It's a fraction of the cost of other solutions, but it gives the control I need. The planning and tilting is a little slow for fast moving objects, but with a long lens it works. The motor noise is noticeable only when you're within about a yard from it, so if you plan on recording audio from the camera mounted on this you would definitely hear the motor. Overall I would highly recommend this for light cameras.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Important Notes I returned the product for two reasons, first, the power button problem, if you turn it off it stay on unless you press it many times and sometimes it came back on by itself. Second, when you attach the head to the crane you need more than 15-degree tilt down. I gave it 4 stars because the price is very good and the product doing the job for panoramic shots. If the speed little bit more and the angle is plus minus 40, the product worth 500. Thanks for B&H for fast return in one day, they are my number 1 store always.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from I might buy again. This motorized pan head is a great deal for the price, however the weight limit is NOT what the head is made for. We put a camera on this head that weights under 5 pounds. The head struggles to tilt back up when you tilt it down. Panning left and right works great, just remember to keep the weight of your camera under 4 pounds.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from sort of works but... it claims to work with a camera up to 11lbs. With a GH4 & tiny lens, the weight is only 1.5lbs. Yet, all footage recorded while this motor is turning is VERY jittery. Not smooth at all. The footage is unusable due to the very noticeable incremental stop/start motor movement. I suggest this motor needs improved to smooth out its panning.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Pot luck This unit worked for a day then seized. OK May have been damaged in transit or may have been faulty. Wasn't sent back as delivery both ways was not a viable financial option. Have since purchased another which is perfect.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Remote DOA Reviews for this product are generally good, therefore I took the dive and bought one. B&H service was impeccable, as usual. The unit was received on Jan 17th, unpacked and tested. The load was a venerable SONY DCR-VX 2200 (well within the load rating of the device). Motion up and down, right and left appeared to be a tad fast but smooth. To my dismay I’ve noticed that the speed control in the remote was not functioning (DOA) i.e. it did not have any effect on the motion speed regardless of the position of the slider. Not a good sign for a brand new product. Being an electronic engineer, I did not hesitate opening the remote to have a look at its innards. (This option was cheaper than going though the hassle of shipping the unit back from Montreal to B&H and risking getting another defective one) The remote is very simple, made up of a printed circuit board, a 3.9K fixed resistor and a 20K slider potentiometer connected as a rheostat. The quality of the slider pot was so pathetic that I almost passed out when I saw it. Sure enough it was the culprit of the malfunction due to intermittent contact. After fiddling with it for a while I’ve got it to work but the writing is on the wall, it is just a matter of time until it acts up again. Getting a replacement remote does not appear to be a viable solution because it will contain the same cheap pot. A long term solution will be to modify the remote by disconnecting the original slider pot and installing a decent rotary one of the proper size to fit inside. I have to go to the electronic component shop and scout for a proper pot. All in all, time will tell about the reliability of the product, but judging from the above, I’m not holding my breath. Bescor: you had only one chance to make a first impression…. and you blew it
