Yamaha FS850 overview

  • 1Description

The FS Series FS850 from Yamaha is a full-size concert-style acoustic guitar made with a solid mahogany top, and mahogany back and sides with a natural finish. The compact FS body is 10mm slimmer than the larger dreadnought-style FG body, providing increased comfort with no loss of volume or bass. Well suited for solo performance or playing with a full band, the FS850 utilizes a newly developed scalloped bracing design, which results in a powerful and balanced acoustic sound with stronger lows and mids than its predecessors.

The FS850 features a nato neck with a smooth matte finish for ease in playing, and is equipped with a set of chrome die-cast tuners on the headstock. The fingerboard and bridge are both made of rosewood, while the nut and saddle are made from urea. Additional features include black ABS bridge pins to secure the strings, mahogany and cream body binding, abalone with black and white soundhole inlay, and a tortoise-patterned pickguard. The FS850 ships with a hex wrench.

    Yamaha FS850 reviews

FS850 FS Series Concert-Style Acoustic Guitar (Natural) is rated 3.0 out of 5 by 1.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Needs Quality Check!!! I patiently waited for this Yamaha FS850 to arrive cause it was backordered (which I understand). Finally I got it Jan. 12, 2018. First, the condition of the box was discouraging cause there were a few torn areas which scared me that the guitar might have some scratches or cracks. I expected it to be shipped in another box and not just the bare yamaha box itself that is not sturdy. Luckily, there’s no physical damage. I don’t think BH shipped the guitar cause all the other items that came from them were nicely packed - the guitar case was securely protected. Funny cause the guitar itself was not. Then the hex wrench which was supposed to be included in the box was missing. Played the guitar a few times when suddenly the G string snapped, it almost hit my eye. Take note that it was slightly used since my fingers were still hurting. Of course I removed all the strings in preparation for replacement. Finally after all the strings were removed, I discovered that 2 out of the 6 bridge pins are very loose. I don’t even have to pull it - just tilt the guitar and those 2 pins will just fall off. Something’s not right! BH customer service was helpful to coordinate the missing hex wrench and was about to request a new set of bridge pins from the manufacturer. But when I spoke to Yamaha customer service, I was told that the 2 holes might be bigger than it’s supposed to be hence, the loose pins. He said there’s nothing that can be done but to replace the guitar. BH immediately took care of the RMA so I was able to shipped back the guitar. Thanks BH! Cross fingers that the replacement would have no defects and hoping that it would sound great as what is expected from a Yamaha.
