After being told I needed to upgrade to a newer supported NAS, I spent three days trying to transfer files from old to new with the new drive repeatedly going off line. Moving on from WD.

    Security for backups

This is the sixth of these that I have installed and find it reliable and easy to maintain. When a drive wore out, the indicator lights identified which one to extract and swap for a new drive. The system automatically reconstructed the mirror.

A 4k video daily backup solution

I could no longer tolerate the time it took to backup my SSD video capture cards to a USB Raid Enclosure. I have use WD RAID cabinets for many years and know the software. So I decided to get the empty box and put a pair of 16TB drives in it. The 10TB RAID 1 array I have in my editing computer was at capacity. The transfer speed over a network more than tripled what I was getting across USB 3. On location I carry a router so USB is not a limitation, I can run 1000GB ethernet with a power cord and a few cables. One drawback. this is not a hot swap system. In fact, it does not like to have the disks changed. The good news, it works, the bad news, you better know what you are doing. There is no on/off switch. You must unplug it, swap in a new drive pair, then plug it back in. It takes some time for it to recognize the new drives. You must wait until the power light goes solid blue and the drive lights go red. About 5 minutes. Then with the administration software tell it the drives are ok to use. Then your back in business. The real beauty, it has two USB 3 ports. I plugged in an Atomos drive dock and transferred the dailies directly to the server. it took 1 hour to copy 450 GB from an SSD to the server. Depending on your production requirements, and your passion for backup files, I can see having one of these for each camera on the shoot.

Unable to use. Could not connect to my network. I am attempting to get a refund and that is difficult to do since my account has not been updated to delivered it wouldn’t allow me to request a refund. Don’t know how long I’ll have to wait on IT to fix that.

Functions as any drive. I did not realize that because this is a RAID drive, whatever you storage you select is functionally halved. I bought the 8TB drive and it has 4TB storage, backed up internally. Cool feature, just wish I had know so I could have purchased the 16TB.

    horrible product, horrible support

unbelievably horrible technical support, this company is honestly an embarassment. For years I've been recommending your products because they were solid, so I bought a brand new cloud connected NAS for my healthcare clients. I bought this system specifically because of its proud declaration of being fully integratable with Apple. It's not, by the way, which I found out after wasting thousands of my clients money for me to figure it out. After weeks of back and forth with support, never getting called back about escalations, I've finally decided to hang up the towel after finally hearing back from L3 to just default the unit, then found out on the next call it had been closed and the process would need to be started over. Don't bother, the product is bad and the support is somehow worse. Not one basic function of a NAS has worked correctly from the start. An utter dissappointment, I'm embarassed I recommended you.

Is this a true server in the sense that you can install QuicksBooks on it and use for 5 user application? We have the 5 user license. Currently we have QBs installed on the computer of one of the users and is shared that way. We would like to it off the user's computer if possible and have it in a place of it's own.

Is the WD My Cloud Expert Series suitable for transferring very large files across the internet? Like a 200 Gig file in Los Angeles being downloaded by someone in New York, for example?
    Asked by: Russo
Transfer speeds are determined mostly by the upload speed of the internet connection the unit is attached to. Just about all internet services delivered by cable are asynchronous, meaning upload speeds are much slower than download speeds.Transferring large files on these connections take much longer. Internet delivered by fiber optic connections are usually fast up and fast down. Check with your ISP to find out.
