Fujifilm 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 overview

  • 1Description

Combining a pair of optics to truly extend your reach, the Fujifilm XF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 R LM OIS WR Lens with 1.4x Teleconverter Kit from B&H bundles the versatile telephoto zoom with a dedicated teleconverter to provide an impressive 213-853mm total equivalent focal length range to suit photographing a variety of distant subjects.

The XF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 R LM OIS WR lens is a weather-sealed optic designed for APS-C-format X-series mirrorless cameras, and provides a 152-609mm equivalent focal length range. Ideal for wildlife and sports photography applications, a twin linear AF motor offers fast and accurate focusing performance while a five-stop effective optical image stabilization system minimizes the appearance of camera shake. The lens' optical design incorporates five extra-low dispersion elements and one Super extra-low dispersion element to reduce color fringing and aberrations throughout the zoom range. The lens also sports a focus limiter switch, zoom-lock switch, and includes a removable rotating tripod collar.

Included with the lens is the XF 1.4x TC WR Teleconverter, which extends the reach of the lens to an equivalent 213-853mm focal length range with only a one-stop loss in exposure. The teleconverter maintains full AF and auto-exposure capabilities and also matches the weather-resistant design of the lens for use in harsh environments.

  • Fujifilm XF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 R LM OIS WR Lens

A long-reaching zoom optimized for use in harsh climates, the XF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 R LM OIS WR Lens is designed for Fujifilm X-series mirrorless cameras and provides a 152-609mm equivalent focal length range. Ideally suited for wildlife and sports applications, the versatile telephoto range benefits photographing distant, moving subjects, and is reinforced by a twin linear AF motor for fast performance, as well as five stop-effective optical image stabilization to minimize the appearance of camera shake. Further benefitting its use outdoors, this 100-400mm lens also sports a weather-sealed construction and fluorine-coated front element to guard against dust and moisture from affecting the lens' performance.

In regards to the optical design, this lens incorporates five extra-low dispersion elements and one Super extra-low dispersion element, which reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations throughout the zoom range for increased clarity and color fidelity. Additionally a nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality when working with selective focus techniques.

Designed for APS-C-format X-mount mirrorless cameras, this telephoto zoom offers a 152-609mm equivalent focal length range to suit working with distant subjects.
The 21 elements, 14 groups optical design includes five extra-low dispersion elements and one Super extra-low dispersion element to minimize chromatic aberrations and distortions throughout the zoom range.
A five stop-effective optical image stabilization system minimizes the appearance of camera shake for sharper handheld shooting in low-light conditions and with slower shutter speeds.
The twin linear motor autofocus system delivers quick and smooth autofocus performance that is especially beneficial when working with fast-moving subjects.
A focus limiter switch on the side of the lens barrel lets you constrain the focusing range to either the full range of 5.7' to infinity, or from 16.4' to infinity for faster focusing performance with distant subjects.
A fluorine coating has been applied to the front lens element to guard against smudging, moisture, and dust.
The lens body incorporates 13 distinct weather seals in 12 locations to protect against dust and moisture, and to enable worry-free use in inclement conditions. Additionally, the weather-sealed design also permits working in temperatures as low as 14°F.
Nine rounded diaphragm blades contribute to a pleasing out-of-focus quality to benefit the use of selective focus and shallow depth of field techniques.
Zoom-lock switch prevents unwanted zoom creep from occurring and also can be used to maintain the same zoom position while shooting.
The included lens hood incorporates a sliding window to allow easier adjustment of rotating filters, such as a polarizer, while the hood is installed.
A removable, rotating tripod collar allows for well-balanced mounting and shooting when working from a tripod or monopod.
Compatible with the optional XF 1.4x TC WR teleconverter for extending the effective focal length to an equivalent 213-853mm.

Fujifilm 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 reviews

XF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 R LM OIS WR Lens with 1.4x Teleconverter Kit is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 30.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Superb lens I'm very glad I bought this XF 100-400 lens for my Fuji X-Pro2. It's sharp, relatively easy to hand hold, and is very sharp. The OIS feature really does allow you to hand hold at shutter speeds where you'd normally want to use a monopod or tripod. The zoom ring is somewhat firm, so you do have to exert some pressure, but that beats having your zoom setting suddenly slide because it's loose. The 1.4x Teleconverter Kit is excellent, too. I'm tempted to buy the 2x Teleconverter based on this setup. I'm looking forward to some bird photography late summer with this lens (I have a Nikon D810 plus the 200-500 and 80-400, which are heavier than this combo).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great long lens for the Fuji system Great lens, fun to use, lighter than long lenses I've used before. And plenty sharp with quick focus. Sample photos were from my first day shooting - handheld, sitting in a kayak, breezy day, early evening (just getting the setting sun), using the Fuji X-T10. Certainly lived up to my expectations. My only disappointment is that it doesn't come with a carrying case - just a cloth sack that offer very very little protection. I'll need to find a good backpack for my kit.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very sharp and incredible image stabilization. I was able to take the lens out of the box up to the badlands in South Dakota. Having recently switched from full frame with large older non-stabilized lenses to the XT1 and now the XT2 I was amazed at the sharpness I can achieve hand held at 400 mm at 1/40th. Would have gotten nothing useable in the past. So from the cracks and crevices of Mt. Rushmore to every hair on the bison in the fields I am truly impressed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This is an OUTSTANDING lens! The 100-400 lens is outstanding for getting the needed reach necessary to shoot your subject. I found it works very well in all the circumstances I put it through. I use it with my XT-1 and had no problem with focus or catching Birds in Flight. I am extremely pleased with my purchase and will no doubt get a great deal of joy in using this lens.. I did notice the difference of light received using the 1.4 Teleconverter. In good light I was really impressed with the performance of the combination - the combo worked as well as the lens on its own. However when my subject was hiding itself in the shade (Usually small birds) I did notice a small issue focusing on the subject. This was minor though and should be expected in low-light conditions for all lenses. I did NOT experience this when NOT using the converter and the excellent low-light performance of the XT-1 still produced excellent Image Quality. .

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Trial run done - nothing to complain about I was able to take my brand new lens out for a spin at a bird sanctuary the day after it arrived. My first impressions are quite favorable. Even though I have an older camera body it didn't focus hunt badly, except perhaps near to it's closest focus limits. It was quick enough to even track flying birds. The OIS seemed to work fine, even though the firmware update hasn't been released for my camera body yet, so I'm curious to see what changes when I'm able to do that. Its long enough with the tele-extender to take nice images of larger birds from quite a long distance - tree tops aren't out of range - and smaller ones from a reasonable one, that isn't too close to scare them off. I do think that perhaps the motors that are needed to run that lens do drain the battery a bit quicker, but it wasn't ridiculous and over the course of 4-5 hours I did not need more than one spare. It feels solid on the camera without feeling like it's too heavy, even though the camera is small and light and the lens can be comfortably hand held. The zoom is nice and tight. I didn't notice any creep. At F8 with the converter on it may suffer a bit in lower light, but yesterday at least, on a nice day, it was just fine, and at the price point I can't really complain that it's not faster.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Reaching Out The system needed a longer lens for wildlife photographers and now we have it. OIS is great. I have handheld lens and extender at 1/80 of a second.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome Man is this lens awesome! I have used the Nikon version - this is just as sharp, if not sharper, than it. I was blown away by it. While you lose some light with the 1.4TC in front of it, it is still almost as sharp. On the Fuji X-T1, it winds up being a 150-600 (35 eq) - and with the 1.4 attached it becomes a 210-840 (35 eq) - now that is some close up - and all with accuracy and full color!! Amazing piece of glass. With a Canon 500D attached, it really becomes a great macro lens!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fuji deal maker I primarily shoot animals in the zoo or various rescue and shelters around Phoenix. I was shooting a D750 and a Sigma 150-600 lens and getting shorter every time I picked it up. A good friend of mine told me about Olympuses micro 4/3 system but the sensor seemed to small. Sony's r7 stuff had limited lenses and was a little out of my range. Enter Fujifilm! I rented the X-T1 and this lens and it was love at first click. It focuses quickly and accurately and it's incredibly intuitive to use, (only took me about a week). I now have 2 bodies and 6 lenses all of which weigh les than my Nikon with the big glass. The difference between mirror less and full frame is the difference between a Mac and a PC. I have 2 more Nikon lenses to sell and then the conversion is complete. If you are one of those people that feel as though more pixels are better, save your money, you're going to need it!
