Pentax D FA 15-30mm f/2.8 ED SDM WR Overview

A specialized, ultra-wide angle zoom, the HD PENTAX-D FA 15-30mm f/2.8 ED SDM WR Lens from Pentax offers full-frame shooters an excellent f/2.8 constant aperture to allow for exceptional control over depth of field and the ability to work in low-light conditions. It uses ED glass elements to reduce aberrations and features an HD multi-layer coating to limit flare and ghosting. Operation is fast, with a Supersonic Direct-Drive Motor (SDM) for autofocus and it has a Quick-Shift focus system for switching between auto and manual focusing. And, it can focus down to 11" for convenience.

Ensuring optimal performance on Pentax DSLRs, the lens is fully dust- and weather-resistant with eight seals to protect from intrusion. This is assisted by the use of a Super Protect coating on the bulbous front element as well as an integrated lens hood for minimal damage in case of an accident. Additionally, it has a 9-bladed rounded diaphragm for smooth out-of-focus elements.

Covering ultra-wide to wide-angle perspectives, this 15-30mm zoom offers a unique option for full-frame K-mount Pentax DSLRs and is also compatible with APS-C models, where it will provide a 23-46mm equivalent focal length range.
Constant f/2.8 maximum aperture maintains consistent performance throughout the zoom range and also contributes to greater selective focus control.
ED glass elements are featured in the lens design and help to control chromatic aberrations and reduce color fringing for increased clarity and color fidelity.
The High Definition (HD) multi-layer coating is utilized to reduce reflections, flare, and ghosting for improved contrast and color in more trying lighting conditions.
Super Protect coating and integrated lens hood help keep the optics safe in the event of accidental impact or when it comes in contact with water or dust.
Supersonic Direct-Drive Motor (SDM) ensures fast, quiet, and smoother autofocus operation.
A rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality when employing shallow depth of field techniques. It is completely rounded between f/2.8-4 when at 15mm and between f/2.8-5.6 when at 30mm.
A weather-resistant design features eight seals which better permit working in inclement conditions.

Pentax D FA 15-30mm f/2.8 ED SDM WR Reviews

Great Lens and a wonderful addition to my kit!

The lens arrived in four days after placing my order. The build and finish is top notch. Image captures are sharp and colours are punchy. The 15-30 sits very nicely on my K-1 with the battery grip attached. I recommend this lens to all Pentax shooters.

A must have for the K1

Some reviews state this lens is a bit heavy compared to other lenses, it is but you also get a lot more glass in the front. This lens is a re-branding of the Tamron 15-30mm so nearly all accessories for that lens, such as ND filter holders will work on this lens. The Haida 15 system at this point (2019) has the best reviews for ND filters, UV Filters & polarizers. The polarizer on the Haida can rotate independently of the square filters unlike the Lee system, which is fixed. If you have a K1, you are most likely shooting landscapes, and this lens is a must have.

I have only used this lens coupled with my Pentax K-1, and the results are nothing short of spectacular.  The image quality for this zoom is on par from what Id expect from a prime lens.  The lens is quite large but easy to use. The front element is quite exposed, so I always keep my lens cap on when not in use.  It does take a 150mm square filter system, I use the Haida version but theyre also available from Lee, NiSi, Wonderpana, and Im sure a few others. This lens isnt cheap, and neither are the filters if youre looking to use NDs. But the quality makes up for it.

I like wide angle portrait shots. So this is my favorite lens and I use it on first priority. It privides a clear view so I enjoy using it. It doesnt have much distortion as well. I use it almost for a year now and Im happy overall. I strongly recommend this lens.

Great wide zoom

Have only been using this lens for a short time, but I love the lack of distortion youd associate with an extreme wide like 15mm. Glad to have this as part of my main battery of lenses. It is a bit heavy, but what isnt with this much glass involved. Great lens!

Incredibly sharp lens

very sharp lens.  The zooming and focusing rings work with just the right amount of pressure. The 2.8 aperature works well for night sky photos. The autofocus is quick and quiet.   The only drawbacks are the hefty weight and no filter threads to attach filters.

Great lens, except for the non removable hood, I had to spend even more money on a filter system to work with it

Bad outweighs the good.

Bad:  1) Lens flare. if you are shooting into the sun at all, the lens flare is so bad it will ruin your photos half the time. 2) Sharpness. It's not. Id give it a 4/10 for sharpness... very disappointing.. believe me I wanted to love this for sharpness but it just doesn't deliver. 3) Weight. Combine this with a K1 and you're looking at 5.02 pounds.  4) Price. I expected better performance at this price point. Good: 1) at F22 you can get very extreme starburst effect, very extreme... good for effect but looks fake. 2) at 15mm its sharper at F4 and worst as aperture decreases, which is good for astro. 3)at 24 & 30mm its sharper at F16, worse larger aperture. 4) fewer problems with low light shots. I did back to back comparisons against my canon 24-105L and Rokinon 14mm F2.8..on 6Dmk2. I suggest you rent first before purchase because mileage may vary from all the glowing reviews.

question

Who makes this lens?
Asked by: Anonymous
It is manufactured by Tamron to Pentax's standards, including Pentax's lens coating. It is a stellar performer. I was a bit nervous about buying it knowing it was a rebadge but it is a tremendous lens.

Would you recommend this lens for portraits?

Definitely not. This is a wide angle lens, and a fine one. It is intended for landscapes and architecture. For portraits you want a moderate telephoto, about 70 to 100 mm.

question

Is there a filter holder/system for this?
Asked by: Anonymous
Yes the Lee Filter SW150 Mark II work perfectly. For this incredible sharp lens, finding a polarized filter was a must for me, Lee filter is the solution, expensive yes, but it work beautifully. For any Pentax lover, go for it, the lens will give you all you expect from it!

question

Is this lens ideal for astrophotography?
Asked by: Kelly S.
It is a nice one for it. It depends on what you are trying to capture. I used it this summer to catch a small portion of the tree line along with the sky. I also used the D FA*70-200 to capture a different perspective. I use this lens primarily for architecture and real estate. It will do nicely if your main need is for astrophotography.. The real key to star and sky shots is the astro tracer function in the k3 and k1, though (I shoot with the k1). You will absolutely love this lens.
