Canon 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 overview

  • 1Description

A versatile zoom optimized for both stills and video, the EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM from Canon is a 28.8-216mm equivalent lens designed for APS-C-format DSLRs. Incorporating NANO USM technology, this lens is characterized by its combination of a fast, stills-optimized ring-type Ultrasonic Motor and smooth, silent video-optimized stepping motor for all-around focusing performance to benefit multimedia image-makers. This dual-purpose AF motor also offers notably quicker performance throughout the zoom range for more responsive shooting from near to far. Additionally, also aiding both photo and movie recording, an Image Stabilizer system compensates for up to four stops of camera shake for sharper handheld shooting. The lens is also compatible with the optional PZ-E1 Power Zoom Adapter for more natural and controllable zooming performance. Updated to suit the increasing presence of video in a photographer's workflow, this zoom is versatile in regard to both focus handling as well as with its wide-angle to telephoto reach.

In regard to the optical design, one ultra-low dispersion element is featured, along with one aspherical element, to reduce chromatic aberrations throughout the zoom range as well as limit spherical aberrations and distortions for increased clarity and sharpness.

A standard zoom designed for APS-C-format Canon DSLRs, this 18-135mm lens provides a 28.8-216mm equivalent focal length range that covers wide-angle to telephoto perspectives.
The optical design incorporates one UD element and one aspherical element to minimize chromatic and spherical aberrations throughout the zoom range for increased clarity.
Super Spectra coating has been applied to individual elements to minimize ghosting and flare for greater contrast and color neutrality when working in strong lighting conditions.
NANO USM system utilizes both a ring type USM and an STM mechanism to realize quick and accurate focusing that is also smooth and near-silent to suit both photography and video applications. This focusing system also affords full-time manual focus control when working in the one-shot AF mode.
An Image Stabilizer compensates for up to four stops of camera shake for sharper handheld shooting when working in difficult lighting conditions and with slower shutter speeds.
A rounded seven-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality when working with selective focus and shallow depth of field techniques.
The optional PZ-E1 Power Zoom Adapter can be used for smoother, more natural and silent zooming control when recording video.

    Canon 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 reviews

    EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Lens is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 19.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great all-purpose Super35mm lens This lens basically lives on my Canon C100. It has a great zoom range, it's lightweight, compact, and sharp. With the addition of the PZ-E1 Power Zoom Adapter, it operates much like an ENG lens, capable of smooth zoom shots. I don't give it 5 stars because the aperture flickers when zooming during a shot. This is okay in dark scenes (like nighttime exteriors or in a theater setting) but in bright light it becomes very apparent. It's really my only complaint about the lens, but it's a big one. If you're planning on using this for brightly lit shots and want to zoom, be aware of the flickering aperture.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great lens! i bought this lens in the hopes of never having to switch lenses again. So far i'm incredibly satisfied. The 18-135 range provides enough variety to not bother carrying anything else with me and the picture quality has been great. I had borrowed a friend's 18-135 first generation model and liked it but worried about the lens expanding due to gravity while walking around. The added lock feature (only locks fully retracted) was a nice addition to the lens. The new lens is also much quieter than the original as you would expect with the USM. Haven't had the lens long but loving it so far.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Interesting This lens came with my 80D. I've used both for just a few days. The camera/lens kit wasn't released until 3/25/16. After charging the camera battery, it was off to play with this lens. My first impressions are that the focusing speed is substantially fast than the previous lens. Zoom is smooth to operate. The speed of focusing, though, had surprised me. It was able to track my fast moving grandkids as they hunted for Easter eggs. Whether it was the combination of the new Canon 80D and its AI focusing and the Nano USM, but I never lost a single frame due to a focusing issue. I had been using a Tamron lens and was fairly pleased with its attributes and clarity, but due to the older focusing motor it is much slower than this Canon lens. While I'm still new to the lens, I think it will become my standard on camera staple. I was very surprised that a lens hood was not included as a standard item.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for video i bought my canon eos 80d and canon ef-s 18-135mm lens to make YouTube uploadable videos of grandkids and neices|nephews. My first use of all the equipment worked out very well. The quality improvement of the picture from my eos 20d was amazing. The lens was smooth to move in and out. The AL servo worked great. The sound with the sennheiser mke 600 shotgun mic was also a major improvement over previous video productions with a variety of video cameras. I look forward to more extensive use of the equipment and also to extend their use with accessories. For the lens I hope to get the Canon PZ-E1 Power Zoom adapter. I also used the lense for quick camera photos indoors and was pleased with the results. I own various lenses and this one compared well with the others. Especially for filming the kids doing karaoke! The MP 4 quality was stupendous.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Lens This lens is quite perfect. The picture is as sharp as my prime 28 mm and my EF-S 15-85mm IS USM. Good colors and equivalent distortion. In addition, the built is very good and IS and nano USM work nicely. I strongly recommend.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice Lens I replaced a 18 to 200mm non-usm lens with this and so far, very happy. It's super quiet and fast to focus. The only thing to get used to is that when set to manual focus, you need to depress the button to get the manual focus to react since its electronic. Not a big deal, but different than a fully manual lens. Auto focus works as normal.
