SLR Magic Anamorphot Cine 35mm T2.4 Overview

Building upon their experience with anamorphic adapters, SLR Magic produced this 35mm 1.33x Anamorphot-CINE Lens that delivers a complete, one piece, anamorphic lens with a maximum aperture of T2.4. The lens provides a 2.35:1 aspect ratio to your image when used with your 16:9 sensor. Suitable for use with cameras with a S35 sensor, the anamorphic lens allows you record an image with a wider aspect ratio than your sensor's native aspect ratio without cropping your image, which maximizes the resolution of your image.

The lens incorporates a mask that exaggerates the anamorphic lens flare effect to simulate the look of a 2x anamorphic element. The lens features a 3.5' minimum focus distance and has geared focus and iris rings. It is worth pointing out that the front of the lens rotates as you focus, which may affect your choice of matte box. The 82mm front filter thread allows you to screw in filters, such as diopters to shorten the 3.5' minimum focus distance.

This 35mm lens produces a 2.35:1 aspect ratio on 16:9 sensors. This allows you to get a greater widescreen effect while maximizing your sensors resolution.
The internal mask produces an anamorphic effect on flares closer to a 2x anamorphic without affecting the 1.33x optical anamorphic effect.
Geared focus and iris rings allow use follow focus units or lens motors to pull your focus or iris.

question

Since the crop factor has changed for 4k recording on GH5 cameras, now covering all of the frame how does this lens perform ?
Asked by: OZGUR DEVRIM
From the beginning the SLR Magic 35mm T2.4 2x Anamorphot-CINE Lens (MFT Mount) has covered the the full MFT sensor so no problem there. Now with the GH5, instead of a 2.3 crop you will get the normal MFT 2x crop (from a Full Frame sensor). The image will have a slightly wider Field of View (FOV).

Would this lens fit on a Fujifilm X-T3 body?
Asked by: Alexander
It would not. This is an MFT mount lens and the X-T3 uses a different X mount.

question

What are the mounting options for this lens? Is there a foot support? It is very heavy at over 3 pounds.
Asked by: Tracy W.
On the bottom of the lens is a 1/4 thread for lens support. You can use a 15mm LWS such as the Zacuto Recoil or Wooden Camera Quick Cage for DSLR. Then on the rods your could use this support. Zacuto 1/4 20 Lens Support B&H # ZAZ14LS1. In a pinch however you can handhold it. In this situation, the camera mounts to the lens so if you hold the lens, no particular strain on the lens mount.

question

What field of view does this have vertically? Is the vertical field of view equivalent to 35 mm full frame or is it equivalent to a 35 mm m4/3?
Asked by: Steven H.
This anamorphic lens creates the same vertical field of view as a spherical lens of the same length. However, your result will vary do to the shape of the sensor being different from anamorphic mode or flat.

question

how would this lens work on a smaller sensor such as a super16 - 12.48 x 7.02 mm sensor size ?
Asked by: Rick l.
If the lens mount and the flange depth are correct, then this lens will cover a Super16 sensor and focus without issue. I would assume you are thinking of the Blackmagic Design Pocket Cinema Camera and are wondering what this lens would actually look like on it. With anamorphic, in order to maintain perspective, the rule of thumb is to 2X the focal length for the focal length you would normally use. In Super16, the Rule Of Thumb (ROT) with regular lenses: wide is 12mm, normal is 25mm and telephoto is 50mm. When shooting in anamorphic, you would then consider 25mm the wide, 50mm the normal and 100mm the telephoto. With this 35mm anamorphic lens, you would be getting a moderate wide perspective in the frame. This of course is not the same thing as the wide aspect ratio you are shooting in. (Which is the whole point of anamorphic.)

question

Can you mount this lens to the ursa mini ef using a mtf to ef converter?
Asked by: Joe M.
I'm afraid not. We are not aware of an adapter that will allow you to put MFT lenses on an EF camera.
