Tamron 90mm f/2.8 overview

  • 1Description

Optimized for close-up shooting, the SP 90mm f/2.8 Di Macro 1:1 VC USD Lens from Tamron is a short telephoto prime designed for FX-format Nikon F-mount DSLRs. Offering a life-size maximum magnification ratio of 1:1, this lens benefits working with small and nearby subjects and employs a Floating System for maintained image quality throughout the 11.8" to infinity focusing range. One Low Dispersion and two Extra Low Dispersion glass elements are incorporated into the optical design to minimize chromatic aberrations and color fringing for clean, consistent sharpness and clarity throughout the magnification range. BBAR and eBAND coatings have also been applied to minimize flare and ghosting for increased contrast when working in strong lighting conditions, and a rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality to benefit shallow depth of field imagery. As an update to the classic 90mm macro, this enhanced version is well-suited to the high-resolution crop of DSLRs and blends timeless appeal and functionality with current imaging performance.

Supporting the imaging attributes is Vibration Compensation image stabilization, which minimizes the appearance of camera shake by up to 3.5 stops for sharper handheld shooting. Also aiding in creating sharp imagery, a precise, macro-optimized ring-type USD autofocus motor provides fast and well-controlled focusing performance. A dedicated USD actuator is used to refine focusing precision at close distances and also compensates for small amounts of camera shake common to working at higher magnifications. Additionally, the focus motor affords full-time manual focus control for a greater range of adjustment capabilities. A moisture-resistant physical construction enables its use in trying environments and the front element has also received a fluorine coating to guard against smudges and moisture from affecting image quality. Additionally, this lens is compatible with the optional TAP-in Console for fine-tuning focusing performance and updating the lens' firmware.

A short-telephoto focal length optimized for macro shooting, this 90mm lens is designed for FX-format Nikon F-mount DSLRs, and is also compatible with DX models where it will provide a 135mm equivalent focal length.
Bright f/2.8 maximum aperture offers a clean viewfinder image and is also beneficial for working in low-light conditions and for isolating focus.
One LD (Low Dispersion) and two XLD (Extra Low Dispersion) glass elements are incorporated in the 14 elements, 11 groups optical design, and contribute to a marked reduction in chromatic aberrations and color fringing throughout the aperture and focusing ranges.
Designed as a true macro lens, this optic affords a life-size 1:1 maximum magnification ratio along with an 11.8" minimum focusing distance to suit working with close-up subjects, and a Floating System is employed for consistent image quality and sharpness throughout the focusing range.
eBAND (Extended Bandwidth & Angular-Dependency) and BBAR (Broad-Band Anti-Reflection) coatings have been applied to lens elements to reduce surface reflections and prevent lens flare and ghosting for increased contrast and color accuracy.
VC (Vibration Compensation) image stabilization is incorporated into the lens' design to minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to 3.5 stops for sharper handheld shooting in low-light conditions. An accelerometer has also been added to the VC system to compensate for shift-type camera shakes along the X/Y plane, and a gyro sensor is used to accurately detect and enable motion compensation throughout the focusing range.
Ring-type USD (Ultrasonic Silent Drive) motor and an optimized USD actuator are employed for fast, precise, and quiet autofocus performance that benefits both stills and video recording. This motor also enables full-time manual focus control without having to shift into a dedicated MF mode.
An internal focusing mechanism is also used to maintain the overall lens length during use, along with a comfortable working distance of approximately 5.5".
A Focus Limiter Switch is used to constrain the lens' focusing range for faster performance. A choice of 1.6'-infinity, 11.8"-1.6', and 11.8"-infinity ranges are available.
Moisture-resistant construction incorporates seals around the lens mount and other areas to benefit working in inclement conditions. Additionally, a fluorine coating has been applied to the front lens element to repel water, fingerprints, and smudges for easier cleaning of the lens surface.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm produces a pleasing out-of-focus quality when working with shallow depth of field techniques.
Compatible with the optional TAP-in Console for updating the lens' firmware as well as adjusting focus settings via the TAP-in Utility software.
SILKYPIX Developer Studio for Tamron software is included with the lens, which, aside from enabling basic raw processing and image adjustments, works to specifically correct for various aberrations, including color fringing, distortion, and peripheral light fall-off, using dedicated optical data from Tamron's SP-series of lenses.

    Tamron 90mm f/2.8 reviews

SP 90mm f/2.8 Di Macro 1:1 VC USD Lens for Nikon F is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 35.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great macro I am a big fan of Tamron and this is my 3rd Tamron lens. It is sharp (as expected with any prime lens) and the colors are rich and vibrant. The lens coatings help with glare, dust, moisture, and fingerprints. I debated getting a lens with a longer focal length but I'm glad I got this one. 90mm is very workable without being long distance, and the price is much less. The only cons are: 1.) VC makes a slight noise when focusing, and 2.) it sometimes fails to attain AF even after the camera emits a focus beep. The pros far outweigh the cons so I'll just have to make sure I have enough contrast at the point of focus or use manual focus.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Survived the rainforests of Borneo Having never owned a macro lens before, I purchased this lens because of an impending trip to Borneo where there are many interesting insects to photograph. I was worried about trying to carry an extra lens so its lightweight appealed to me (it was considerably lighter than the Nikon or Sigma lenses I was considering). The moisture-resistant construction was also appealing since we were going to do night walks in the rainforests. It performed very well, focussing in the dark very quickly and I was able to shoot handheld. Overall I was very happy with the performance of this lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Sharp, Well Built, Light This lens was tested on a Nikon D810 using it as both a macro lens and for close up imaging. It did not show color aberrations or fringing or demonstrate any undesirable characteristics. Focus was accurate and fast. Apparent sharpness was excellent. I had upgraded to this newer version of this Tamron 90mm and this version appears to be at least equivalent in performance to the older version, so what is gained is presumably a tougher, more weather-sealed lens. Optical construction is stated as much the same as before and the lens has the 6-year warranty, so I consider it to be worth consideration for the Nikon D810. Interestingly, the DxO Lab tests of this lens on the D810 show it to be sharper than the Nikon 105mm Micro. I would agree that this is a very sharp lens on this camera. Very satisfied with this lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fine Macro for Nikons Unlike the first review, I found this lens very smooth and silent in its auto focus. The lens is sharp, very sharp. Portraits render with beautiful skin tones and I really liked the bokeh that is smooth and creamy. I have no experience comparing it with other Macro nikkors, but this lens does an outstanding job resolving details. The manual focus override works very smoothly. A minor quirk though is that it does not always consistently show the aperture settings correctly on my D750

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Sharp, Fast Focus, Silent Vibration Compensation I have been using the lens for about a week now. The autofocus is very fast and has been very reliable in my experience so far. The vibration compensation is silent. Much quieter than my previously owned Canon IS lenses. The VC also feels quite a bit more capable at macro distances than the past Tamron 90mm macro. I liked the matte finish on the previous version a little better because it was less likely to show fingerprints and light scratches. This lens isn't heavy, but weighs as much as my previous Canon 100mm L macro and feels well built. I like that it has a six year warranty and was made in Japan, though country of manufacture seems to be less and less important these days. I have had none of the autofocus hunting issues that another reviewer has experienced and am happy to say this is by far the fastest focusing macro lens from minimum to infinity and back again that I have ever owned> I have the Nikon 200mm f4 D macro lens, that uses the camera focus motor. While I also love my Nikon for specific uses, the focus speed on the Tamron makes the old Nikon feel like an absolute dinosaur, which it kind of is. The lens focuses internally and does not extend based on focus distance. The lens hood is included and feels fine. No lens case was included which is a bit of a disappointment at this price point. Great lens. A few years ago, I would never have thought of owning a Tamron or a Sigma, but these new SP lenses and Sigmas Art and Sport lineups have made me a believer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Pro Advise I had the Nikon 105 Macro but I had all kinds of problems with it. My main complaint was that the aperture was not uniform. I sent it to Nikon Professional Services, twice. I've been shooting professionally (Product) for 35 years and I'm really happy with this lens. First macro I've ever used that I didn't need to exclusively manual focus. I think it's head and shoulders better than the Nikon, but I had a bad sample. Take it from an old pro who has owned 10+ Macros, this is a nice mid length model. I'm having a lot of fun shooting abstract macros with it when I'm not shooting Jewelry and computer parts.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nothing bad to say about this lens Outstanding image quality, fast focus, light weight and my favorite focal length. Focus is fast and silent. VC is exception. VC is quite, IF means lens stays one size. This lens is heavily use for portraits, macro's and landscapes as well as product / advertising work. Used on d810, D750 and DF in extreme weather and temps (hot and cold) no issues. Definitely worth 5 stars to me.
