  • 1Description

Photographers Formulary TF-4 Archival Rapid Fixer is an extraordinary fixer for both paper and most films.

TF-4 works well in batch processing, fixing resin coated paper in 30 seconds and fiber based paper in 60 seconds.

You can also use TF-4 on TMax films, fixing for 6 minutes to remove the magenta stain. it is recommended to run 20 rolls of film to 1 liter working solution.

TF-4 fixer does not require a stop bath or a hypo-clearing agent, and has little odor when mixed with distilled water.

TF-4 is a non-hardening fixer, which makes it excellent for prints that are to be toned or retouched. Most modern film emulsions have a built-in hardener, eliminating the need for hardener in the fix.

The stock solution which has a shelf life of 1 year is diluted 1:3 to make the working solution. The working solution has a shelf life of 6 months.

TF-4 is recommended in The Book of Pyro for PMK negatives, by Gordon Hutchings, due to the fact that an alkaline fixer solution such as TF-4 helps achieve maximum pyro stain on a negative.

A conventional rapid fix may diminish staining effects of pyro and PMK formula.

This will make 16 liters (4 gal. - Ship 1 gal.) of Working Solution.

TF-4 Archival Rapid Fixer for Black & White Film & Paper is rated 4.9 out of 5 by 7.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Fantastic for Paper, but not for film This fixes paper super fast and without a stop bath. I still follow much more stringent archival methods than the bottle requires, but this is all I use when I am making prints. Four stars because, for film, I used this with very little success. I use Ilford Pan F, Tmax and TriX films and I tried to fix all these films using TF-4 with horrible results. I even used fresh mixer for each roll of each type and it never cleared the tmax or trix and took forever (for a rapid fixer) to clear the Pan F (10 minutes). I'll never use it for film again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Absolutely The Best Fixer Ever I have read other reviews that users where having trouble clearing Tri-X-Pan negatives with TF-4. Mixed correctly: 1 Quart TF-4, To 3 Quarts distilled water makes fixer which will clear my negs in 30 seconds with content agitation. I also use an open tank processing technique which eliminates any pouring time from a water rinse stop bath to TF-4. I have been using this chemical since I was in the darkroom making prints nearly twenty years ago and still use it for negatives which clear the film base perfectly for drum scanning. I would recommend this to a friend, but after 50 years of processing film and teaching photography for 40, it's hard to find a friend who would stand in a darkroom for hours to use chemicals to make a photograph.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The best fixer! This is a fantastic product. I use it with both film and paper. An alkaline (plain water) stop bath is used with this so less chemistry is required when working. I don't use a second fix with this product and it rinses out quickly with relatively short wash times.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Reliable Rapid Fix I use this product to fix both film and fiber paper. It is recommended for use with PMK developer and I have found it reliable for this use as it doesn't remove the pyro stain. I never get staining with enlarging paper, either.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from excellent product I have used this item for a number of years in my paper processing - and am always happy with the results. Quick, almost odorless, and lasts a while.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from GREAT FIXER This is one of the most convenient fixers i've ever used. Great for PMK developer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from FAST - RELIABLE - ECONOMICAL I've rejected all fixers but TF-4 for B/W negs and prints.
