Photographers' Formulary 03-0165 Overview

The Photographer's Formulary Hypo Clear Agent aids in the archival process It removes the residual fixer in film and paper.

It works based upon ion exchange: ions adsorbed onto a solid film or paper can be replaced by ions of a solution such as those found in the Hypo Clear solution.

The net effect is that the adsorbed thiosulfate ions of the hypo (difficult to remove by a water wash) are replaced by sulfite ions (readily removed by a water wash).

Hypo Clear does not decrease the total number of ions absorbed on the paper, it merely exchanges those ions originally on the film or paper with those of Hypo Clear.

Note: Washing after the use of Hypo Clear is imperitive.

The chemicals in this kit are used to make the stock solution which is diluted 1:9 to make the working solution.

Easy to mix and goes a long way

I'm not shooting nearly as much film as I used to, but I still enjoy the silver process. The Formulary's Hypo Clear allows me to mix a concentrated stock solution which can then be diluted in smaller quantities as needed for the number of rolls processed. I'm fussy about my negatives and appreciate that this product insures archival standards when used according to the directions.

Comes in two pack of A and B to make 1 liter stock of which is just the right amount for me. Kodak no longer make smaller pack and the larger pack is too much for me. So, this iss a very good alternative for me. Easy to mix and use. The result is good and consistent. This is my go to hypo now. Glade that B&H stock this so I can hop on the subway and pick it up whenever I need it.

question

So, you mix it to make 1,000 mL. How do you reuse it? Don't you need to use it for 30 seconds? Do you pour it into the film canister, agitate and then pour out to reuse?
Asked by: Dasha K.
While I cannot speak for Photographers' Formulary, Kodak's hypo clearing agent, once mixed, could be reused until it turned from clear to a gray-blue color, then it was discarded. Kept in a sealed container, it had a very long shelf life.
