Designed for simple, stress-free operation with point and shoot capability for both still imagery and video, convenience is maximized by selecting from among 18 scene modes or using the Easy Auto Mode, which automatically optimizes the camera's settings even while shooting under challenging lighting conditions.

16MP Image Sensor

The 16MP 1/2.3" BSI CMOS sensor features stacked backside-illuminated technology to enhance its low-light capabilities. 7.4 fps of continuous shooting is possible along with an ISO range of 125-6400.

40x NIKKOR VR Zoom Lens

The B500 has a 40x NIKKOR ED VR zoom lens with a focal length range of 4.0-160mm, giving a 35mm equivalent of 22.5-900mm, which covers wide-angle to telephoto shots with a maximum aperture range of f/3.0-6.5. It features three ED lens elements for improving sharpness, color, and image quality, as well as Vibration Reduction to reduce the appearance of camera shake.

3" LCD Screen

The B500's tilting 3" 921k-dot TFT-LCD monitor has an anti-reflective coating as well as 5-level brightness adjustment; making it easy to compose images from unique angles, monitor video recording, and navigate menus.

When paired with a compatible smart device using the Nikon SnapBridge app, built-in Bluetooth low energy (BLE), Wi-Fi, and NFC connectivity allow the B500 to quickly and easily send photos for sharing on social media sites. Upload photos on the go, even in remote locations, or use a smartphone or tablet to control the camera.

Full HD Video

Record Full HD 1080p video at 30 fps with stereo sound. 4-Axis Hybrid Vibration Reduction (VR) keeps videos steady. Transform a video into a fast-motion sequence with the Superlapse Movie feature, great for first-person perspectives, sports moments, video tours, and more.

Easy Exposure Control

Simple, stress-free operation with point and shoot capability for both still imagery and video. The Smart Portrait System utilizes multiple features such as Face Priority AF, Skin Softening, Blink Warning, and more to enhance images of people; while Target Finding AF quickly determines the intended subject and maintains focus. Choose from among 18 scene modes or Easy Auto Mode, which automatically optimizes the camera's settings, even while shooting under challenging lighting conditions.

My DSLR went Desconpuesta, so I picked this up as an interim. I really like the focus and clarity - even at high magnification. My need is for a faster focus and shutter speed, to complement my bird-watching. So, this camera will be a great re-gift to my daughter or grandson . . . Perfect for their uses.

A Great Camera!

I bought this camera for two main reasons. First and most importantly, I wanted a camera that used AA batteries instead of lithium rechargeable batteries. I have owned a few lithium battery cameras and have always been frustrated by their relatively short battery life (before needing recharging) and the cost of replacement or additional batteries. I can buy good quality AA batteries anywhere for a reasonable cost - no need to be looking for a place to recharge. Secondly, I wanted a camera that had a pretty good zoom capability and the Nikon B500 does that quite well. I am very happy with this camera. I wish camera manufacturers would make more cameras that used AA batteries - or at least had the ability to use AA batteries instead of lithium rechargeable.

Takes good photos if you trust the camera to do everything for you. This camera would be so much better if included Manual settings. Canon, Lumix, Sony, and even Kodak have similar cameras to this and yet include Manual exposure settings. Including Manual settings and the ability to shoot RAW files would make this camera really great. But, as it is now it is just Okay.

Good, not great

I am an insurance adjuster and I need a camera that uses AA batteries so I swap out in the field. The CoolPix can take 500 flash photos with vs 60 photos with a Canon Sure-Shot and rechargeable batteries. Other than that, the Canon Sure-Shot takes better photos and had better focusing.

My wife is getting into photography but doesn't like using my big, DSLRs. This was the perfect upgrade for her. She has been shooting amazing photos and really enjoying her dive into photography.

question

Can the b500 be set to take widescreen photos?
Asked by: Anonymous
According to page 105 of the Nikon Coolpix B500 Digital Camera's Reference Manual, the aspect ratios (horizontal to vertical) available from the camera would be 4:3 (default), 16:9 (widescreen), and 1:1 (square). You may choose the image size and quality (and as such, the aspect ratio) as indicated on page 105 by entering the shooting mode, then pressing the MENU button --> Image Mode --> OK button and selecting your chosen image size.

question

How good would this camera be for shooting sporting events, both inside and out with a lot of action? Thanks! Any other suggestions for a <$800 camera for this that is easy to transport?
Asked by: Sarah B.
I bought this camera for my 15 year old grandson. I have not used it. I don't think you would find this camera what you are looking for as far as action shots at sporting events go. It is a very nice entry level camera and my grandson loves it.
