Atomos ATOMNJAFL1 Overview

  • 1Description

The Atomos Ninja Flame is a 7", 1920 x 1200 on-camera recording monitor that combines 4K recording with a 10-bit FRC panel that supports native display of HDR (log) footage as well as high brightness viewing of Rec. 709 footage. It utilizes an HDMI input to support clean output signals at resolutions up to UHD 4K, recording it to 2.5" SSDs using 10-bit, 4:2:2 Apple ProRes and Avid DNxHR codecs.

The 10-bit panel and AtomHDR display technology support a brightness range of over 10 stops, allowing you to more accurately monitor your log gamma footage without having to view flat, washed-out looking images or use a LUT to compress the dynamic range and color space. The monitor offers built-in pre-sets to accurately translate popular log formats from Sony, Canon, Panasonic, ARRI, RED, and JVC cameras. The settings only affect viewing, with recorded video remained unaltered.

In addition to HDR monitoring, the monitor also offers a High Bright mode for traditional Rec. 709 monitoring. This mode takes advantage of the full 1500 cd/m² brightness to allow for more confident monitoring in bright outdoor environments, even without a sun hood. In HDR mode, use of an included snap-on sun hood is required, as displaying a wider brightness range reduces the overall brightness of the monitor.

Built to withstand the rigors of production, the Ninja Flame features built-in protective armor that features silicone-covered corners and chamfered edges. Compared to the original Ninja, the Flame now features dual Sony L-Series battery plates that support battery hot-swapping, enabling longer run times. For audio recording, the monitor features a 3.5mm microphone input, with on-screen audio level display. Additionally, the monitor features a variety of onscreen exposure analysis, framing, and focus assist tools. Included with the monitor are two NP-F750 batteries, along with a fast charger, D-tap power cable, AC power adapter, control cable, USB 3.0 docking station, and five Master Caddy SSD/HDD cases. All items come packaged in a custom HPRC hard case.

    Atomos ATOMNJAFL1 Reviews

Ninja Flame 7- 4K HDMI Recording Monitor Full Kit is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 49.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product This is one of the best products I think I've ever purchased. I use it both in the field and in the studio for what you get for a monitor and a recorder the flexibility and durability is incredible.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Makes my C100 come alive I love my Canon C100; it's a great camera but I have trouble focusing with the small viewfinder. I bought it with the Atomos Ninja 2 which helps a little. Now I can focus big-time with peaking and zebras, waveform monitor as well as record uncompressed with my Ninja Flame. It was a good deal at the old price, but the recent price reduction makes it a super deal if you desire this functionality.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Will recommend this to every DSLR shooter I shoot on a Sony A7s and wanted to upgrade to 4K so this was the best option for me. The display is really bright. HDR is a total game changer. Amazing value for money and $1200 for a 4K upgrade is not bad and you get an amazing display with Atomos HDR.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from WHERE'S MY $200.00 REBATE ? I purchased my Ninja Flame on 11/20/2016 when there was a $200,00 rebate offered. I still don't have my rebate. I've called their rebate center several times and each time get the run-around. I've also sent the unit in twice for repair and although the repair facility appears to be first rate, I am still left with doubts about the dependability of the unit when I go out on a filming job.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Flame to Nikon D810 I have a Atomos Ninja Blade I use to record video out from computers (PowerPoint slide shows) and wanted to record the speaker using a Nikon D810. Atomos had a special running so I picked up the Flame as a way to get beyond the recording limits of the D810 (time and compression) so that everything from a lecture was is ProRes and ready to edit. Pros - straightforward setup / bigger screen to view images (than a Blade) / multiple recording options Cons - menu setup more complex Overall, works well, gives a larger image to verify recording, fast and reliable.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very happy Great for shooting video with Nikon D4s and Nikon D5. Clear bright screen and intuitive controls. Love the dual battery slots so that there is no down time. I use it in my studio all the time

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I would buy this product again I upgraded from a Ninja 2 to Ninja Flame 7. I am very pleased needless to say with my choice. It's an excellent piece of equipment, as was the Ninja 2.

Magnification for Focus Checks - Can I punch in to the image to check focus? Is magnification restricted to only center of monitor, or can i select an off-center face in a group (for example), and magnify zoom in on this off-center face to check focus?
    Asked by: Prof. Colette B.
Yes you can. You can zoom in on the screen to check focus and you are able to use the touch screen to select the area of the screen you'd like to check focus on.

Am i correct in understanding that when the ninja flame is paired with the a7s ii, the footage would go from 8 bit to 10 bit? In other words would I be getting 10 bit 4k out of the a7s ii?
    Asked by: William S.
The Ninja Flame paired with the A7Sii is great but you will still be getting 8 Bit footage. It can only do what your camera is feeding it.

Is this a viable external recorder for a Sony FS100u? I purchased a used FS100u recently & from what I can tell it can film uncompressed 4.2.2 color when outputting to an external recorder. I'm not sure if it's 10 or 8 bit nor if it outputs 60fps out of the hdmi to the external. Im wondering if this is a good option for for the fs100 or if just an external hard drive will be a better suggestion.
    Asked by: Carey M.
The FS700 outputs 8-bit only 4:2:2 signals over HDMI. You can select 60p or 24p among other resolutions or frame rates. So you can use this Ninja Flame if you wish. However if you do not intend to go to a 4K camera in the near future, the Flame may be overkill. You might consider the more affordable Atomos Ninja Blade 5 HDMI On-Camera Monitor & Recorder (Full Version) B&H # ATNB5M (back ordered) or the Atomos 4.3 Ninja 2 Video Recorder (Full Version) B&H # ATN2Q. Sorry, but there is no direct to hard drive option available.

hi.will this work with recording 4k from 5dk3?
    Asked by: Elie K.
This will record 4K from most any 4K video camera. However, while the 5D Mark IV records 4K, it cannot send the 4K video out to an external recorder.

Hello: Will the autofocus of the A6300 and specifically features like face tracking among others, work when the Ninja Flame is connected to the camera?
    Asked by: Evangelos K.
Hi Evangelos, Yes the autofocus feature will work with the unit connected. We don't interfere with the cameras operation, only record the uncompressed signal coming form the sensor. -Ian
