PTZOptics PT12X-SDI Overview

This is the 12x-SDI Gen2 model of the PTZOptics lineup of advanced live streaming cameras, in gray, featuring a 3G-SDI output for connecting to switching equipment for broadcast conferencing. The Gen2 model is capable of 1080p60/50 recording (instead of a max of 30 fps), and streaming in H.265 and MJPEG in addition to H.264.

This camera has a 3.5 - 42.3mm lens providing a 12x zoom range, allowing for effective close-focus and wide-angle shots to best suit both face-to-face and group meetings. It does well in low-light conditions owing to a fast f/1.8 - f/2.8 lens aperture and minimum illumination requirement of only 0.5 lux at f/1.8. On top of this, built-in wide dynamic range and 2D and 3D noise cancellation further enhance the conferencing experience. The camera, along with its entire family of 20x and 12x models, is completely open-source so developers can customize everything as they prefer using simple HTML commands.

In addition to the 3D-SDI output, the camera also has LAN, HDMI, and composite outputs, RS-232 input and output with daisy-chain capability, and an RS-485 port. The SDI, LAN, and HDMI outputs can be used simultaneously at the same resolution, which can be assigned via a dial on the rear. The composite output can only be used by itself and at 480i/576i resolution. The LAN output is capable of streaming two H.264 or two H.265 RTSP signals, one in HD and one in SD, or a single MJPEG signal, and allows for direct distribution to CDNs, streaming services, and other destinations using only the camera. There's also a 3.5mm audio input for embedding audio into an HDMI signal or LAN stream so you can deliver both audio and video to your destination. The LAN port can be used for streaming and control and also supports Power-over-Ethernet. As an alternative to direct streaming from the LAN port you can also connect external devices for more advanced conferencing. You'll also find a USB 2.0 port among all the connections, but this is strictly for firmware updates.

The camera can be controlled via the LAN port over a network, ONVIF over a network, and RS-232 via VISCA commands. RS-232 control includes control from any NewTek TriCaster, including any of the TriCaster Mini models. Simply connect multiple cameras to the TriCaster using DB9 cables and operate all of them from its software. A TriCaster can also be used over IP control using third-party software.

A large variety of software is supported, including most online meeting software, mobile apps for control over your network, and the advanced PTZOptics Network Control and VISCA Control applications.

An included IR remote control lets you adjust many settings via an on-screen display, allowing you to set and call presets, and control up to four cameras. You can set up to 64 presets in the camera (and up to 255 via RS-232), with a preset accuracy of 0.1°, and you can call up to 10 presets using the remote. The camera can be used desktop-mounted or ceiling-mounted, using an optional PTZOptics ceiling-mount bracket.

PTZOptics PT12X-SDI Reviews

Solid performance- year after year

We have standardized on the PTZ Optics cameras for our meeting spaces and have been very happy with the performance, and picture quality. We continue to stay with PTZ Optics because we believe there is not a better camera out there in this price range.

Great cameras for our church

Covid-19 put our small Church in a bind with not being able to have in person worship. So we had to jump into streaming head first first starting out with just a phone and now with three cameras and a streaming computer. It's not like we weren't thinking about doing this in the future but it came faster than we thought. Equipment purchased through b&h fit our needs perfectly. The cameras function very well and the video feed is sharp and crisp.

Great for the money

We have all three variants of these cameras, including the 12x, 20x and 30x zoom, using them for smaller events. I'll start by saying this - if you're choosing between this and the 20x variant, I'd say you're money is better spent on the 20x as it's only $100 more as of writing this. Aside from that extra 8x zoom though, everything else is the same. The Power over Ethernet (PoE) allows us to run, send 1080p signal and power the camera all over one cable, and by using Wirecast (though it's probably the same for other platforms) you can have multiple video signals coming in all over Ethernet. These cameras don't have audio, so you will need to deal with that, and we typically use SDI to a Blackmagic 4k switcher to get the video, but having everything work over Ethernet it's impressive nonetheless. The image quality out of the box is rather poor, and this is mainly due to PTZ optics auto settings. Blacks have a greenish tint, and most shots looked over exposed. Turning exposure and color to manual let us tweak the settings to the point where we got a good picture, and turning off their grain remover mostly fixed the green hue to shadows/blacks. If you're going to use these cameras, you will want to address these settings. Aside from this, what you get for your money is pretty impressive. We've used these at multiple events and set them up in churches for their live streams during Covid-19, and they've definitely paid for themselves 100 fold.

Didn't meet expectations

Picture quality is very reasonable for the price point. Automatic exposure has difficulty in high contrast situations. Remote control over RS422 is good but exposure is not controllable. iOS app is an additional cost and can only control PTZ and focus, none of the other settings can be managed. Biggest issue is that latency on SDI and HDMI outputs is over 130ms which causes very noticeable audio sync issues when using an external audio source.

This camera makes it feel like we are watching real TV. Its fast, accurate, freezes the picture during preset changes, software is amazing and totally free. Does not show the picture well while moving but it's not designed for that. It has to be the best company out there doing live streaming.

We are using 2 12x and 1 20x to stream our worship service. Picture quality and control capabilities are outstanding.

We shoot mostly in low light situations, and the PTZ Optics really does well in that environment. These are the 6th and 7th PTZO cameras we have purchased for this location. 100% satisfied and happy about it.

Better sharpness than the 30x

These 12x camera have a slightly sharper image quality than their PTZOptics 30x equivalent. So if you do not need the additional magnification the 12x will be better. My only complaint is that the circuitry is not via rings and thus you have rotational limits preventing the camera from going a full 360. Although it still does have a good range it just almost rotates 360.

Do you recomend getting the NDI versions over the SDI?
Asked by: David
Yes, as NDI technology spreads its solid foothold in the industry and with all of the advanced and useful features, and widening compatibility of new products offered by NDI, it would be unwise to not consider NDI as the first choice.

Can this camera be controlled(PTZ) by a App on a Iphone, or does it need to be a hardwired controller?

Yes, there are apps for support for both iOS and Android: https://ptzoptics.com/apps/ios/ You do not need a dedicated PTZ controller to use the app control function, though the camera will need to be connected to a network.

question

Are all the video outputs simultaneous? Can I use the USB outputs, HDMI output and IP Streaming output at the same time? If yes, can I use the RJ45 IP connection for control and IP streaming at the same time?
Asked by: Lauren B.
Yes, a great feature of the PTZOptics cameras are that their outputs are all active. This allows to configure your set-up in multiple ways. You can control and stream over the IP at the same time as well.
