Sony DSC-HX80 overview

  • 1Description

Blending an advanced, low-light optimized image sensor with a long-reaching zoom, the Cyber-shot DSC-HX80 Digital Camera from Sony is also characterized by its svelte form factor and intuitive handling design. At the heart is an 18.2MP 1/2.3" Exmor R CMOS sensor, which features a back-illuminated design, along with a BIONZ X image processor to avail smooth image quality, reduced noise, and an expandable sensitivity range up to ISO 12800. The sensor and processor combination also avail fast performance throughout the camera system, including a 10 fps continuous shooting rate and the ability to record Full HD 1080p video at 60 fps in the XAVC S format. Balancing the imaging capabilities is an apt physical design, which incorporates both a pop-up OLED Tru-Finder electronic viewfinder and 180° tilting 3.0" 921k-dot LCD monitor into its design, along with built-in Wi-Fi with NFC for wireless image sharing and remote camera control via a linked smartphone or tablet. Contrasting the sleek size, the HX80 is also distinguished by its expansive 30x zoom Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T* lens, which provides a 24-720mm equivalent zoom range. Spanning wide-angle to super telephoto perspectives, this lens benefits from its 5-axis Optical SteadyShot image stabilization; minimizing the appearance of camera shake to produce sharper results. A true all-in-one pocketable camera, the HX80 blends both form and function, as well as imaging versatility to handle a wide array of everyday shooting needs.

18.2MP Exmor R CMOS Sensor and BIONZ X Image Processor
Using an 18.2MP 1/2.3" Exmor R CMOS sensor and BIONZ X image processor, the HX80 is able to produce high-resolution stills and full HD video with notable clarity and smooth tonality. The sensor employs a back-illuminated design, too, allowing it to achieve reduced noise levels along with a native sensitivity range to ISO 3200, which can be extended to ISO 12800 for working in low-light conditions. The sensor and processor also provide a continuous shooting rate of 10 fps for up to 10 consecutive frames in a burst.

Additionally, Full HD 1080 video recording is supported in 60p, 60i, or 24p frame rates, with the ability to use the high-quality 50 Mbps XAVC S format or familiar high-definition AVCHD format. When using either of these formats, a secondary Internet-friendly MP4 version can be simultaneously recorded for easy online sharing.
Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T* 30x Optical Zoom Lens
Covering wide-angle to super telephoto perspectives, the built-in 30x Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T* lens spans a 24-720mm equivalent focal length range. Five aspherical elements are incorporated in the optical design, which reduce spherical aberrations throughout the zoom range, and a T* anti-reflective coating helps to control lens flare and ghosting for increased contrast and color neutrality.

Complementing the optical design, the lens's performance also benefits from its 5-axis Optical SteadyShot image stabilization to minimize the appearance of camera shake. An Intelligent Active Mode is also available to reduce blur common to shooting video while moving. Also aiding in achieving sharp imagery, Fast Intelligent AF employs an optimized spatial object detection algorithm to quicken focusing speeds as well as refine accuracy for consistently sharp results.
Body Design and Wi-Fi
  • Helping to maintain a sleek form factor, the 638k-dot OLED Tru-Finder electronic viewfinder employs a unique pop-up design to retain a pocketable overall size when not in use.
  • A comfortable viewing alternative, the rear 3.0" 921k-dot LCD monitor employs a 180° tilting design to facilitate working from low angles or taking front-facing selfies.
  • The large right-hand grip offers increased comfort and support for longer shooting sessions.
  • A customizable function button can be programmed to adjust one of 12 oft-used camera settings, such as white balance, Picture Effects, and more; for faster, more intuitive access to settings switching.
  • A Digital Level Gauge helps to ensure consistently level horizons and plumb verticals during shooting.
  • Built-in Wi-Fi with NFC lets you wirelessly share imagery to a smartphone or tablet for instant sharing online. This connectivity also lets you remotely control the camera from a mobile device.
  • A series of PlayMemories Camera Apps can be added to the camera to increase the functionality and add new shooting modes.
  • The included NP-BX1 rechargeable lithium-ion battery provides approximately 390 shots per charge when working with the rear monitor, or 360 shots per charge when shooting with the electronic viewfinder.

Sony DSC-HX80 reviews

Cyber-shot DSC-HX80 Digital Camera is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 46.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from I would highly recommend this magic camera I bought this camera mostly for travel and family events. I never could imagine that this small camera can provide such an extremely high quality pictures and video clips. Viewfinder and flash are imbedded the way not to interfere with your activity and can be put to work in a matter of seconds. Zoom is terrific, 24mm - 720 mm allow to take panoramic shots and arm close objects. Especially camera proved to be good for a portrait shooting. Given all included features the ratio price / quality cannot be any better. Strongly recommend this camera to those looking to by an inexpensive high quality apparatus.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This is the point and shoot camera I have been waiting for! This is the one camera that does everything for me anywhere in the world that I shoot photos! Great Zeiss telephoto 30X lens with wide angle. Lightweight so that it fits in my front pocket. The flip up rear screen is great for taking selfies in front of the Eiffel Tower! Pop up view finder is great when the sunshine glare diminishes my rear screen view. It's easy to use and convenient when you want optimal photo quality and don't want to lug around a lot of gear. This is my every day point and shoot camera for day and night, landscape or faces. Best investment I have made all year.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I am so glad I bought this camera. I will soon be going to the Galapagos and wanted another camera with a longer zoom to go with my sony rx-10. I also needed a camera with an evf because of bright sun, and did not want a camera that required changing lenses. This camera has exceeded my expectations. I have been practicing by taking shots of hawks and geese and the autofocus is very quick with the hand held zoom. At full zoom it can take longer to focus, but by pulling back a little I have some very clear and sharp pictures. This is a solid pocket camera for anyone. It is easy to set-up and use and the evf is a bonus at this price. I am in my 70's and used Canon cameras for years and am gradually switching over to Sony. I have no regrets with this purchase.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A little package with a lot of tech It is a great camera with many features. I can deal with most of technology having some experience. My wife will have to do some learning. I bought it for her. A SIMPLE point and shoot may have been a better choice for her. This little package, out performs my heavy, large body unit with a bag full of lens. It makes me wonder why I should keep it. The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX 80 is an excellent camera for quality photography.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My review of the Sony HX-80 First off this camera is an excellent for the price for a carry about point and shoot with a popup view finder. The cameras long zoom lens will take a little getting used to, at 720 mm can be a little hard to handle but it does work well and allows you to get some great zoom pictures. This camera is a 1/2.3 sensor which is you standard point and shoot size and will not go much beyond an 8X10 print, yes you can do bigger but your print will get mushy at some point..If you want to blow up your shots then be aware of the camera specifications. At $350.00 with all the bells and whistles of a much more expensive camera is great buy. If you want to enlarge your prints and to get much better quality then consider a camera with a 1 inch sensor or bigger. The cost of the camera will go up substantially with the larger sensor..

Rated 5 out of 5 by from By far the best point and shoot traveler camera I used to own Sony HX50 but need to find a replacement. The new HX80 now has a pop up view finder which is very helpful in bright light. The photos quality is sharp and clear almost comparable with my Nikon D5000 DSL under good lighting. It is very fast in focusing even at telephoto range. It is very fast initiating the first shot making it a good impromptu camera when traveling. The 30x zoom is so useful in framing a good capturing shots during travel. The steady shot works well. At 720mm telephoto, picture quality does deteriorate but this is expected with a small sensor. This small and well built point and shoot camera, so light that you can easily fit into your pocket and did not even feel the weight will be a wonderful choice to bring with you in any trip.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good pocket camera Sony still my first choice for price, and quality the camera has good features for a pocket camera with possibilities to practice the basic photography knowledge before jump into a reflex or a more professional equipment. i have been using it almost every day since approximately 1 year ago and the camera still wihtout any problem. camera had few injuries after fall down due to the use during some sports activities, and still without any deficit. I had the 90 ( stolen) and compared with that one the only missed thing is the GPS and the objective zoom. the size is adequate for a daily use allowing you to carry the camera always without any discomfort.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Quality in small package! I, too, could not imagine the results I have obtained using this compact camera. I recently returned from a trip to Italy, found this camera to do everthing my Digtal SLR can do without having tote around lenses and other gear. I would recommend this to anyone who is planning a trip. It will lighten your load, AND it will give you quality exposures which can be greatly enlarged withou sacrficing clarity! I am most impressed, and give an excellent recommendation.
