Meade ETX90 overview

  • 1Description

Meade Instruments gives you a complete GoTo-enabled observation rig with the ability to make detailed observations of the Moon, easily see planets, and reach outside the solar system to resolve bright deep-space objects with their venerable ETX90 Observer 90mm f/13.8 Maksutov-Cassegrain GoTo Telescope. The compact and powerful Maksutov design uses a front corrector plate with a convex meniscus lens to correct off-axis aberrations, like comas, and chromatic aberration to produce images with true-color rendition. The nature of the lens results in a smaller secondary mirrorlimiting obstruction and increasing contrast, while eliminating the need for periodic collimation. This optical path results in a slower focal ratio and narrower field of view versus a similar Schmidt-Cassegrain variant, but the optical benefits makes this an ideal scope for all types of celestial observations.

For those who want to use it for astrophotography, an internal mirror flips down to direct the light path straight back for prime-focus photography using a DSLR camera body and optional adapters. An equatorial tilt plate is integrated into the tripod, which allows for proper polar alignment and single-axis tracking for smoother and more precise tracking as required by long-exposure photography.

The brain of this system is Meade's revolutionary AudioStar hand controller. Equipped with a 2-line LED display and 20-key red backlit keypad and an integrated speaker, it controls the motorized mount for precise GoTo capabilities. Its internal 30,000+ object database is updatable via the Internet and has the capability to take you on a hands-free guided tour of the night sky above, with audio commentary on select objects with expanded information. To consult star charts and logs, or to change eyepieces and filters, the controller also has a built-in red LED utility light that won't affect your night-adjusted vision.

    Meade ETX90 reviews

    ETX90 Observer 90mm f/13.8 Maksutov-Cassegrain GoTo Telescope is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 2.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Perfect Beginner Telescope I have been using this telescope for about 13 years now. It has never failed, and always delivered. The autostar system works reliably, and once you figure out how to align it, it will serve you for ears. The optics on this scope are wonderful, and they deliver the best performance you can expect from a small aperture. This is especially an empowering telescope for young beginners. I began using this model when I was in elementary school, and the views this telescope provides (hundreds of star clusters, nebulae, planets) sparked a lifelong interest in space. Largely because of the excitement I felt, and still feel when looking through this scope, I continued to love outer space, and I now study astrophysics at UC Berkeley.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Fun first telescope, with issues TL;DR Got this for the 2017 eclipse because 1) tracking 2) flip mirror to switch between camera and eyepiece. THE GOOD: great optics; easy to put together, awesome custom tripod. Can be used in Alt/Az or Polar mode (built-in equaltorial wedge). THE BAD: Audiostar user interface is barely usable e. Camera and eyepiece focus are not remotely in sync. Altitude motors too weak to lift 1lb camera. THE UGLY: center of eyepiece does not match center of camera projection. Cheap, fragile case (separated on first trip). No great receptacle for Audiostar. If it drops and the scope is tilted in polar mode it WILL mess up the tracking. Warning: not a good choice for working with a heavy DSLR. A counterbalance will be required, and none are manufactured so you'll get to make your ow. I used a Nikon D90 which weighs about a 1.5 lbs (750g) and this was too much for the altitude motors, It worked in polar mode for the eclipse. To attach camera, you need a T-ring specific to your camera mount and the Meade SLR Camera Adapter or a Meade Variable Adapter. You will also need a Meade 2x Short-Focus Barlow with the lens removed (it unscrews) to get the eyepiece focus within range of the camera. Focus the camera and then use the eyepiece screw to fine focus. Now your flip mirror works as expected.
