CalDigit VR2 overview

  • 1Description

The VR2 8TB 2-Bay USB 3.0 Raid Array from CalDigit is encased in aluminum making it lightweight and durable while also efficient at dissipating heat. It offers four types of connections: USB 3.0, FireWire 400, FireWire 800, and eSATA, and comes with two carefully selected, tested, and approved 4TB drives to deliver data transfer rates of up to 250 MB/s in RAID 0, or 160 MB/s in RAID 1. This raid array supports RAID 0, 1, Spanning and JBOD; however, the USB 3.0 interface will not accept JBOD configurations. At the front of this device are LED status indicators as well as a LCD display where you can set up and monitor your RAID configurations. For your protection, this unit has a security lock as well as locking drive modules.

Hardware RAID 0, 1 and JBOD with Quadruple Interface
The CalDigit VR2 features hardware RAID, which provides an independent CPU and dedicated cache memory to manage the RAID volume. This dedicated processor eliminates additional strain from the host system's CPU, allowing applications full access. The quadruple interface supports USB 3.0, FireWire 400, FireWire 800, and eSATA, making the CalDigit VR2 extremely versatile. Two FireWire 800 ports make it easy to daisy chain multiple CalDigit VR2s together without any performance loss.
Modular Design
The CalDigit VR2 uses two hot-swappable drive modules, allowing for easy replacement and expansion.
Cool & Quiet
The energy saving, ambient temperature-controlled smart fan runs only when the CalDigit VR2 needs it. It runs quiet yet ensures proper airflow and advanced cooling without compromise. In addition, the CalDigit VR2 is designed with an all-aluminum enclosure to assist with heat dissipation.
Security
The CalDigit VR2 includes a security lock as well as locking drive modules. This prevents anyone from accidentally removing the VR2's drive modules and adds extra piece-of-mind.
Visual Aid
The easy-to-read backlit LCD provides valuable data with just a glance. It also allows configuration without having to be attached to a computer. Additionally, the LED status lights provide a visual representation of the CalDigit VR2's operation.

    CalDigit VR2 reviews

    VR2 8TB 2-Bay USB 3.1 Gen 1 Raid Array (2 x 4TB) is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 1.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome unit, superb build quality! I recently bought one of these for my MacPro5,1 and couldn't be happier. The build quality is absolutely stellar, everything about this unit from the box to the actual drive itself just feels super premium. Pros: - Built like a tank - HDD trays are mostly aluminum, except for the plastic sleds on the side - Bottom feet are rubber and prevent any HDD vibration from reaching the desk - Gorgeous design, fits right in with the old cheese grater Mac Pro - Super easy to determine the status of the entire unit from the front panel - Relatively easy to configure through the LCD interface - Fan only runs when it needs to, otherwise it's turned off completely - HDDs go to sleep when the unit is unmounted and not in use - Mine shipped with 2x 4TB Toshiba 7200RPM 6GB SATA drives w/64mb of cache - Power brick takes a standard IEC C13 power cord - You can easily boot Windows 8 or Windows 10 off this unit over USB on a Mac via EFI - USB 2.0 support works great and I'm getting close to the max speed of the bus - FW800 and eSATA support seem solid and run at their corresponding speeds - RAID0, RAID1, and JBOD choices are all nice to have Cons: - It's really heavy- probably one of the beefiest external HDDs I've ever held - Fan is slightly audible when it's running (but that rarely happens) - HDDs make a dull whooshing noise when spun up, and you can definitely hear the heads seeking - LCD has poor contrast when viewed from +/- 30 vertical (you get that weird colour inversion effect) - Changing any settings will reboot the entire unit, which immediately dismounts the drive (if mounted) - 4TB shows up as 3.6TB (not sure if this is due to the 1024/1000 HDD space counting thing) I should note that there are apparently two versions of this drive on the market right now- there's an older rev 1 floating around, which has a 4 pin power adapter and different HDD trays. The unit I received from B&H Photo is the second revision VR2, which has a 12V/5A DC barrel jack input on the back (instead of a proprietary 4 pin power connector) and has the newer HDD trays (same as Caldigit's other products). All in all, I'm extremely satisfied with my purchase and would recommend this drive to anyone.
