Leica APO-Vario-Elmarit-SL 90-280mm f/2.8-4 Overview

An expansive telephoto zoom carrying with it an apochromatic design, the APO-Vario-Elmarit-SL 90-280mm f/2.8-4 Lens from Leica is designed for full-frame and APS-C-sized L-mount mirrorless cameras. An intricate 23 elements, 17 groups optical design incorporates seven anomalous partial dispersion elements to significantly reduce chromatic aberrations throughout the zoom range and provide faithful color accuracy that is void of fringing. The f/2.8-4 maximum aperture benefits working in a variety of lighting conditions and also offers greater control over focus position for working with shallow depth of field techniques. Designed as an apt-performing tele zoom covering a broad array of focal lengths, this well-corrected optic maintains consistently high clarity and sharpness throughout the long-reaching zoom range.

Complementing the optical attributes, this 90-280mm is also characterized by its fast performance due to internal focusing and zooming. The optical design is broken into seven distinct moving groups, including with two dedicated focusing elements that are driven by linear stepping motors, to expedite focusing accuracy and speed throughout both the zooming and focus ranges. Also benefitting sharpness, an optical image stabilization system compensates for up to 3.5 stops of camera shake to better enable handheld shooting in difficult lighting conditions. When working from a tripod, a removable rotating tripod collar is included for increased stability, and it incorporates firm detents at 90° positions for seamless switching between horizontal and vertical shooting orientations. Additionally, this lens features Leica's AquaDura hydrophobic coating on the front and rear elements, to guard against moisture and smudging, and a fully dust and water-sealed design to protect the lens during use in inclement conditions.

Telephoto zoom 90-280mm L-mount lens is designed for use on full-frame mirrorless cameras, and can also be used on APS-C models where it will provide a 135-420mm equivalent focal length range.
The f/2.8-4 maximum aperture is ideal for working in difficult lighting conditions and also offers increased control over focus position for selective focus applications.
Designated as an apochromat, this lens features seven anomalous partial dispersion elements that reduce chromatic aberrations throughout the zoom range in order to virtually eliminate color fringing and false colors.
An optical image stabilization system compensates for up to 3.5 stops of camera shake for sharper handheld shooting with slower shutter speeds.
A stepping motor with linear positioning offers smooth, silent, and precise autofocus performance for focusing as closely as 2' at the 90mm focal length position, or as closely as 4.6' at the 280mm focal length position.
Dual internal focusing design employs two individual elements for focusing in order produce quick, quiet, and accurate focusing performance. This focusing mechanism also pairs well with the internal zoom design to maintain the overall lens length and to prevent the front 82mm filter ring from rotating during use.
The water-repellent AquaDura coating has been applied to the front and rear optical surfaces to protect against moisture and other elements.
Weather-sealed design protects against dust and moisture to benefit working in trying shooting conditions.
Included lens hood helps to guard against stray light from entering the lens and to prevent unwanted ghosting and flare from occurring.
A removable rotating tripod collar lends increased stability when shooting atop a tripod, and incorporates detents at 90° positions for more intuitive switching between horizontal and vertical shooting orientations.

The APO 90-280 with SL (601) are a wonderful match.

Yes, it's heavy but it's worth the lug. Very unique and useful focal length range. Superb build quality - it's a Leica alright. These images were hand-held at 280mm.

Love it. Easy to use, very stable, and not as heavy as I thought it would be. I use it with my SL2 and the photos are EXTREMELY sharp. Thanks B&H for your help in selecting this great lens.

This sense is now my favorite. Its picture quality is 5 star and it's very fast focusing. It is big but feels indestructible and carriers the Leica brand for a quality build as expected. I am very happy to round out my lease line up with this one.

Great quality and bulky

Superb image quality and very well built. I expect it to come a bit more compact. Size and price make me think about it again if it's worth for the image quality if I had a chance to see if before place order online. I don't mean it's not a great lens. It's just there are couple of some awesome alternatives in this focal lens that also deliver nice images while being more compact.

Superb IQ but could be smaller

Impressive image quality. Control and build quality are all great. Also because of that the lens is long and heavy when compared to similar products from some other great brands.

Excellent lens

I bought this lens as an in between to the 150-600 zoom. I soon found that a cropped version of this lens was still much sharper than a full image from the 150-600 with both lenses at full magnification. While I am not a fan of zooms, (admittedly I am OCD) this lens is very sharp and all I need for wildlife. You invariably get what you pay for with Leica optics. Superb Image quality right out of the SL2.

A remarkable lens

While i have only had a few days to work with my 90-280mm Vario Elmarit on my Leica SL2, I am exceptionally please with the quality of images it delivers. The lens focuses fast and renders life-like color and beautify bokeh. It's truly amazing to be standing 20-50 feet back from a subject and be able to pick out minute details in each image. While the lens is a bit heavy, it is easy to use hand-held as was done for the concert shots below or on a mono-pod for nature shots where watching particular spots for longer time periods is the case. If you can afford this lens you will not be disappointed.

The Leica APO-Vario-Elmarit-SL 90-280mm f/2.8-4 Lens operates at f/3.5 when set to 200mm (it goes up to f/3.6 at the marked 210mm point on the zoom ring). And of course f/4 at 280mm at the end of both focal and aperture ranges.

Will RRS foot replacement for Nikon work on 90-280 lens ?

No, it would not. Unfortunately, Really Right Stuff does not list a dedicated lens plate designed for use with the Leica APO-Vario-Elmarit-SL 90-280mm f/2.8-4 Lens, and does not list cross-compatibility with Nikon replacement feet.
