B&H Photo PC Pro Workstation Z840 overview

  • 1Description

For editors and colorists looking for a high-end, robust workstation, this B&H Kit combines the HP Z840 Rackable Minitower Workstation with Blackmagic Design's DaVinci Resolve Studio, Blackmagic Design's DeckLink 4K Extreme 12G Capture & Playback Card, a Tangent Element Panels Kit, an HP Quadro M6000 graphics card, four 4TB 3.5" 7200 rpm SATA III HDDs, a 64GB (4 x 8GB) memory module kit, and a Thunderbolt 2 card. All of the hardware and software is pre-installed and tested by B&H technicians.

As this system is designed for editors and colorists, a full software license for DaVinci Resolve Studio is provided. Resolve is no longer just advanced color correction software, but a full-fledged non-linear editing system - it even allows to you to import projects from other NLEs, such as from Premiere Pro, as XML files. You can edit, color correct, finish, and deliver all from one system. Moreover, Resolve is highly sophisticated and oriented at the same time toward the individual user, large collaborative teams, and the growing studio owner.

For monitoring and video capture, a Blackmagic Design DeckLink Extreme 4K card is included. It features two multi-rate 12G-SDI inputs and outputs that accept resolutions from SD up to DCI 4K (4096 x 2160) at 60 fps. The card supports 10-bit YUV and 8, 10, and 12-bit RGB color, as well as up/down/cross conversions and 3D stereoscopic output at full bandwidth 4:4:4:4 RGB. Additionally, the card supports AES/EBU balanced XLR and unbalanced RCA inputs/outputs, analog video I/O, reference input, and RS-422 control via an included breakout cable.

The Tangent Devices Element Panels Kit helps make editing or color correcting more user-friendly by removing keyboards and mice from the process. It includes the Tk Panel with three trackerballs - ideal for three-way color correction - the Mf Panel with an additional trackerball plus 21 tactile response buttons - ideal for secondaries work - the Kb Panel with 12 user-assignable knobs, and the Bt Panel with 14 additional tactile response buttons. A magnetic mechanism allows all four panels to be seamlessly combined and it is compatible with software such as DaVinci Resolve and more.

At the heart of this turnkey workstation is the HP Z840 Rackable Minitower Workstation, upgrade with a total of two 2.2 GHz Intel Xeon E5-2650 v4 processors armed with 10 cores on each, for a total of 20 cores. There is also 25MB of Intel Smart Cache per processor, for a total of 50MB. These processors, cores, and cache will allow you to run multiple applications simultaneously and provide significant performance gains when running multi-threaded tasks. If you need more power, the CPU can deliver extra performance by increasing the clock speed up to 3.1 GHz. To provide the GPU acceleration that full-quality, high resolution video playback requires - as well as support task of driving your monitors (available separately) - the workstation features an HP NVIDIA Quadro M6000 GPU with 3072 CUDA Cores and 12GB of GDDR5 RAM.

A natively installed 512GB PCIe SSD drive is provided to hold Windows and all of its applications. While an SSD may not have the larger storage capacity of a traditional spinning hard drive, it does provide faster boot times as well as faster application launching, especially since it uses a PCIe connection as compared to a SATA connection. For media storage, four 4TB 3.5" 7200 rpm SATA III 6 Gb/s internal hard drives are included and are configured as RAID 5. Please bear in mind that while the total storage capacity of 4 x 4TB hard drives is 16TB, the RAID 5 configuration will use one drive for data redundancy, leaving users with 12TB of available storage.

Thunderbolt-compatible peripherals may be connected to this system using the included HP Thunderbolt-2 PCIe 1-Port I/O Card, which allows bi-directional transfer speeds of up to 20 Gb/s and also includes a DisplayPort. Also built into this system are eight USB 3.0 ports, two USB 2.0 Ports, dual Gigabit Ethernet ports, and a SuperMulti DVD Burner. Additionally, a USB keyboard and mouse is included. While the installed operating system is Windows 7 Pro (64-bit), a Windows 10 Pro (64-bit) licenses is included at no additional cost.
