FiiO A1 Overview

The silver A1 from FiiO is a portable headphone amplifier with volume control, hi-fidelity output, and four EQ modes providing maximum flexibility. It can be used for smartphones, computers, tablets, iPods, and MP3 players to increase volume and deliver a more satisfying experience when listening to audio.

Featuring a sandblasted aluminum-alloy chassis, the portable amp uses a rechargeable lithium-ion polymer battery for power and weighs only 0.7 ounces. The four different EQ modes are switchable by briefly pressing the power button. A blue LED flashes to indicate each mode as it is selected.

Furthermore, there is a 3-color status LED to help you monitor the power condition of the unit, which flash differently for power on, charging, low battery, and full battery status. Finally, the tiny size of the A1 portable headphone amplifier makes this a great choice for adding that extra punch to your audio listening experience.

I bought this for my hard-of-hearing mother-in-law for watching the TV with headphones and leaving the TV's speakers off (otherwise she'd have to blast the TV). I connected the TV's audio out RCA connectors to a crossover to 1/4 stereo jack, then to this device, and then to the headphones. This allowed her to amplify the TV audio out so she could hear it. It works fine and is very clear. The three buttons (on/off, volume up, volume down) are a little small and hard to see and press, but it's OK once you know where they are and you can use a pencil eraser top to press them. The on/off indicator light is a dim blue, red or green indicating charging and power state (which my mother-in-law couldn't see or figure out), and is sort of confusing. The unit has two female jacks (for 1/4 input and output), and it also comes with two short 1/4 male to 1/4 male patch cables. I wish I knew that before I bought it, because I needlessly bought a patch cable as well. It runs on battery power for several hours and comes with a mini-USB cord for charging, but it doesn't come with a 115v charging block.

Purchased two, one arrived opened and resealed with tape.

I have earlier versions of this device and used them for many years. I purchased two new A1s to replace my old units and found the packaging for one A1 had been opened and resealed with scotch tape, so this one item was not new. This is the first time in many years that I've received an item from B&H in questionable condition, so I'm hoping that this is an anomaly.

Good for only certain uses

I bought this amp for use with my recently purchased HD8 DJ headphones thinking it would make a difference when plugged into my phone. It didnt, if anything the sound became slightly more bassy and more muddy when compared to sound right out of my S8+, which is more than powerful for my Sennheisers (95 ohm impedance) . That being said, my XPS 13 cannot drive the headphones at all and for that use, it works great as a cheap amplifier. I would only recommend these if you have high impedance headphones coming from a source that cannot drive them whatsoever and you just need a cheap way to drive them. Otherwise, stick with your on board amp or buy something higher quality.

This is my second purchase of this item. I am not sure of a better value in terms of sound quality for an amp that improves the performance of most devices. This one is all analog so no DAC or digital input.

will this unit take a microphone input?

The Fiio A1 features a 3.5 mm stereo input jack for use with portable devices such as Mp3 palyers, smartphone or computer. It is a line level input and not compatible with microphones.

What type of cable do I need to connect the L/R RCA audio outputs of my TV into the FIIO?

You'll need a digital to analog converter attached to the tv (for example, FiiO Taishan). Attach the D/A converter to the FiiO A1 with a stereo mini to dual RCA Y-cable (available at B&amp;H) - male to male.

There's a 3.5mm TRS (stereo) jack on the bottom for audio input from your phone or other device. The A1 comes with a 4-inch 3.5mm TRS male-male jumper. Yes, the mini USB is for charging.

Would these sufficiently drive a 150 Ohm pair of headphones such as the AKG K612?In other words, When the specs say Impedance 16 to 100 Ohms does it mean this is the output impedance or the target impedance of the headphones?

Well they came with my beyer dynamic DT990s 250-Ohm which drives them fine and they are commonly paired with hi-fidelity headphones so yes. The correct answer is yes.
