question

Can the USB ports be used for a direct connection to a computer for local access to the hard drives?
Asked by: Dominik
That was my first thought when I first saw my Synology device. But the kind of USB ports on this Synology device is wrong. Within the USB protocols, this device not to be used as an external drive. The Synology unit is actually a computer itself, with CPU and internal RAM. You can only connect external USB devices -- Flash drives, hard drives, etc. -- with these USB ports. As has been suggested, you can use a straight ethernet cable to connect this device to another computer -- essentially creating a 2-node LAN. Of course, that requires setting up the IP address for this device to allow it to communicate with the other computer. That's what I did to copy files from one computer to this device for backup. Then I connected this device to a router so it could do what it does best -- a well-designed NAS device.

I would not. I would drag the files I need onto your main drive, do the work, and then export it to this unit. Good Luck...

question

Can it operate with less than 4 drives, e.g. start with 1 then add drives over time as the need arises?
Asked by: Denis
Yes, but it probably requires that you decide up front how you are going to configure them.1.) JBOD -- can start with one and add them one at a time.2.) Raid 0 or 1 -- Probably need to start with 2 drives, and add them in pairs.3.) The default raid is a proprietary Synology raid configuration. Since I didn't use it I don't know what the rules would be, but a quick perusal indicates that it might be fairly flexible.4.) Raid 6 -- would be best to start with 4 drives.Dwight
