Lightweight Normal Prime
A simple, bright, and lightweight normal-length prime, the FE 50mm f/1.8 from Sony is a versatile lens designed for full-frame E-mount mirrorless cameras. Blending a sleek stature with a versatile focal length, this 50mm prime excels in a variety of shooting situations and the f/1.8 maximum aperture helps straddle an ideal balance between brightness and a compact form factor.
Optical Design
  • One aspherical element is incorporated in the lens design to reduce astigmatism, field curvature, coma, and other monochromatic aberrations.
  • Double-gauss optical configuration helps to reduce field curvature and distortions for more consistent image quality from edge-to-edge.
  • Besides contributing to depth of field control and low-light performance, the bright f/1.8 design also helps to achieve a lightweight and compact profile, making this lens suitable for everyday, walkaround shooting.
  • Rounded seven-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality when employing selective focus techniques.
Autofocus and Physical Design
  • DC actuator motor offers quick, quiet, and accurate autofocus performance to suit both stills and video applications.
  • Minimum focusing distance of 1.5' and a 0.15x maximum magnification suit working with nearby subjects.

Sony FE 50mm f/1.8 Reviews

Great Value For The Patient

The crux of this lens is the auto-focus. It is slow. You won't be able to photograph anything that involves fast motion, or a lot of times even slow motion while using continuous auto-focus. I knew this before I bought the lens, and it definitely holds true after using the lens. With that out of the way, if you're photographing stationary objects, people, landscapes, flowers, street photography, or focusing manually, I think there's a lot to love about this lens. When you play to its strengths, you can get some really lovely results. Some of my favorite photographs ever have come from this lens. Often from grabbing some candid shots at some local events. I really like the bokeh that I've gotten from shooting wide open with this lens. For the price, I think this lens is a tremendous value. You just have to have the patience to work with the auto-focus shortcomings in some situations. I knew what I was getting into when purchasing this lens, and I only use it in situations that play to its strengths. By doing that, I rarely find myself disappointed with the images I get. If you're ready to learn what this lens likes and doesn't like, I think you can create some amazing images with it. I don't regret purchasing this lens even with the shortcomings. And I think working through the shortcomings is making me a better photographer.

This lens is a fast, sharp, and compact. AF could be a bit quicker, and quieter, but for the price, you can't go wrong.

For its price, this is the best way into a nice portrait lens, with autofocus, for the FE system. I've heard firmware updates to the camera and lens will greatly improve AF, but I haven't tried it yet.
