Spanning a useful range of telephoto focal lengths, the FE 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 G OSS, from Sony, is a versatile zoom mixing long reach with apt optics, impressive image stabilization, and quick autofocus performance. It's a well-rounded choice for photographing sports and distant subjects, and portable enough for everyday, walk-around shooting and event photography.
G Lens Series
  • Two extra-low dispersion glass elements are featured in the lens design to help reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing for improved clarity and color neutrality.
  • Four aspherical elements are incorporated in the lens design to reduce astigmatism, field curvature, coma, and other monochromatic aberrations.
  • Nano AR Coating has been applied to minimize surface reflections, flare, and ghosting for increased contrast and color rendering in strong lighting conditions.
  • Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality when employing selective focus techniques.
Image Stabilization, AF, and Handling
  • Optical SteadyShot image stabilization helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake for sharper imagery when shooting handheld with slower shutter speeds.
  • This stabilization system can also be combined with select camera's sensor-shift type image stabilization for more effective control of camera blur.
  • Dust- and moisture-sealed design better permits working in inclement conditions and rubberized control rings benefit handling in colder temperatures.
  • Linear autofocus motor and internal focus design provide quick and precise autofocus performance and enables accurate and silent focusing while recording videos.
  • Focus range limiter button offers faster performance when photographing moving subjects.
  • Customizable focus hold button for intuitive tactile control and rapid access to select settings.
  • Minimum focusing distance of 3' yields an impressive maximum magnification of 0.31x, making this lens suitable for both close-up and distant subjects.

I had a Nikon lens of the same value and I wanted to stay with the same focal length as a walk-a-round lens. I'm very satisfied with this lens.

This was a big step up for me, dollar wise. My Sony 55-210 was not reaching out for the wildlife photography that I had gotten interested in. Using it on my a6400 is without issue, and my photos are impressive

A superlative lens

This lens is excellent, in that it is very sharp, focuses easily, and is relatively light for a 70-300 mm range. Shortly, after buying it, I took several pictures of the red moon/lunar eclipse. I'm very pleased with it, and highly recommend it.

This is an awesome zoom lens. Tack sharp images at 200 to 30 mm. I've been using non Sony zoom lenses because they are less expensive but now I know why they say that often you get what you paid for. Sony got this h series lens just tight.

Plenty sharp, fast focus, good OSS

This lens (if you get a good copy) is plenty sharp even wide open. My first copy was decentered and soft around 70mm on one side. B&H exchanged it with no problems and the second one was great! It's a very nice travel lens.

question

Does it work well with the A6300?
Asked by: Janos S.
Not sure why it won't be that impressive on a crop sensor. It is FANTASTIC on my A6000 and getting out to 450mm reach is impressive. Not really anything else in the current lineup that can achieve that at this price.

question

I am considering this lens to use for wildlife photography - African Safari. Any thoughts regarding a comparison with the 70-200 f4 and the upcoming 70-200 f2.8G lens. I am an enthusiastic amateur. Any comments would be helpful
Asked by: Andrew
The 70x200 f2.8 would be by far the best if you can afford it. Also can buy telecoverters with. 1-4 and 2 0

An "Informed_buyer" said: "It will work with 6300, but the lens is designed for FF image circle, it won't be that impressive on crop a sensor." Is this true? If so, why? Does it even mean anything?
Asked by: David
This lens should work fine on a A6300, you would be using the center most portion of the lens and will produce sharp images.

The 70x300 not a beginner lens. The G on the lens body always means your getting a upgraded lens.

I upgraded from a Sony crop filter to full frame ...

I upgraded from a Sony crop filter to full frame and am looking to replace my 70-350mm lens with a full frame equivalent for hiking. I do some nature macro and some wildlife photography and a willing to carry a second lens for wide angle shots. Tried the Sigma 100-400mm, but it was just too heavy for me to operate without a tripod. Also didn’t like the relatively long min. variable minimal focal distance. Is the 70-300mm the closest available full frame equivalent to the 70-350? I really would like the extra reach to 400mm for bird shots, but holding the Sigma 100-400mm up in the air was exhausting and made the hike less fun.
Asked by: Michelle
Thank you. I purchased the 70-300mm lens, and it is indeed lightweight and and easy to carry on hikes. No complaints with the build quality, images, or auto-focus performance. I did recent also buy a longer lens to take on shorter walks when I know that there will be a lot of birds since 300mm isn't quite enough zoom.
