ZEISS Batis 18mm f/2.8 Overview

Delivering an impressively wide field of view, the Sony E-mount Batis 18mm f/2.8 from ZEISS is an ultra-wide prime, well-suited to interior, architectural, landscape, and astrophotography applications. Within the Distagon optical design, this lens uses a series of aspherical and anomalous partial dispersion elements to greatly reduce color fringing, distortion, and other aberrations to realize sharp, clear, and color-accurate imagery. A floating elements system is also employed for consistent performance throughout the focusing range, and an enhanced ZEISS T* anti-reflective coating has been applied to reduce flare and ghosting for working in difficult lighting conditions.

Batis-series lenses are distinguished by their innovative use of an OLED display on the lens barrel, which highlights the focus distance and depth of field range for quickly recognizing your focusing parameters. As an autofocus lens, linear motors are used to deliver quick, quiet, and smooth focusing performance to suit both stills and video applications. Additionally, the lens body also sports a dust- and moisture-sealed design to permit its use in trying environments.

Wide-angle prime is designed for full-frame Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras, however can also be used with APS-C models where it will provide a 27mm equivalent focal length
Bright f/2.8 maximum aperture suits working in available-light conditions and is also ideal for astrophotography use.
Distagon optical concept affords high sharpness, well-corrected image quality from edge-to-edge, and very low field curvature.
Two aspherical elements, five elements made from anomalous partial dispersion glass, and a pair of aspherical elements also made from low dispersion glass are featured, and all contribute to significantly reducing chromatic and spherical aberrations, color fringing, and distortion for improved clarity, sharpness, and resolution.
ZEISS T* anti-reflective coating has been applied to each lens surface to help minimize reflections and provide greater contrast and color fidelity.
Floating elements system helps to maintain consistent image quality throughout the entire focusing range, from 9.8" to infinity.
Integrated OLED display on the top of the lens shows the working focus distance as well as the depth of field range for quickly recognizing the parameters of focus in use, even when working in low-light conditions.
Linear motors benefit the autofocus performance of the lens and provide smooth, fast, and quiet operation. For manual focusing, a rubberized ring offers greater tactile control for precise placement of focus.
Dust and weather-sealed construction benefits using the lens in inclement shooting conditions.

ZEISS Batis 18mm f/2.8 Reviews

I have this lens for 3 years and I'm very disapointed

The lens worked as expected for 3 years. It was cared for and used on a regular basis. One day the lens started doing some funky noise while focusing. Quick google research showed abundant complaints of the same issue with this model (some had it after a couple of days, some after a couple of weeks...). Apparently, there are issues with the focus motor design. The only repair center for ZEISS GEAR is in US/KY. Sent my lens and after a month I received no information from Zeiss. Their customer service number does not work. No emails replied...NOTHING. I DO NOT RECOMMEND any Zeiss product, considering the price and the ridiculous customer service. Do your research and you will find abundant issues with the design of this lens and the lack of response from Zeiss customer service.

I have had this lens for three years now. Can't say it's my go to lens, but when I do use it, it never disappoints. This lens produces beautiful color, light, easily fit ND filters and focus quietly with precision. It doesn't have buttons, rings like the newer lenses, it's fine to control lens through camera body. It's not cheap but if it's a worthy investment to your camera bag.

Zeiss Batis 18mm vs Voigtlander 15mm

I've now owned both the Voigtlander 15mm and Zeiss 18mm lenses for a while. The Voigtlander is a manual focus lens and you need to buy dedicated ND filters for it as my Nisi system will not mount to it. I loved shooting the Voigtlander. BUT, because of the enormous depth of field at this focal length, it's easy to bump the focus ring while hiking and not realize you're out of focus. After loosing a bunch of shots due to poor focus, I bought the Zeiss which has autofocus (and works with Nisi). It is a great lens. Set and forget. But I have to say I really miss that 15mm focal length of the Voigtlander. I will keep both lenses but probably still carry the Voigtlander for that special focal length. The Zeiss is a great lens too but for me, I wish they had a 15mm version.

Zeiss Batis 18 mm is an excellent lens

I mounted the lens on a Sony A-7R iii. The lens was very sharp in the center and maintained that sharpness except at the extreme edges if you were shooting a scene in the landscape mode. At 100%, the edges looked reasonably sharp but upon blowing the image up a bit more, I could see some fall-off. However, adding some additional sharpness at the extreme edges was easy with the adjustment brush in Adobe Camera Raw. Contrast and color renditions were excellent and I didn't find vignetting to be an issue at the time of day I was doing my tests. I chose mid-afternoon because I wanted to do my test shots in strong light. I know there can be some vignetting with this lens in lower light situations but that is also an easy fix in Adobe Camera Raw. In sum, this is a very fine lens and the slight fall-off in sharpness at the extreme edges was not a deal breaker for me, particularly at its price.

no auto focus/manual focus switch so manual focus can only be selected via a menu on the camera body itself.

Outstanding Landscape Prime

This lens continues in the Zeiss tradition of outstanding performance. The color fidelity and image quality have made this reason I love this lens for landscape and architectural photography. Since switching to Zeiss primes for my Sony A7R III, I could not be happier with the results.

We bought this lens with the idea in mind that it would be used for Milky Way photos, but my test shots were mostly closeup landscape shots. Very impressed with the corner to corner sharpness, even at wider apetures! This lens on my Sony A7r3 is amazing! Color saturation is excellent and allows for fewer changes in post processing! Hope to get it out under the stars very soon!

The ZEISS Batis lenses are compatible with any camera using the Sony E mount system, including the Hasselblad Lunar. Since this camera uses an APS-C size sensor, you need to plan for a 1.5x crop factor.
