Sigma 35mm f/1.4 overview

  • 1Description

Capture brilliant and sharp images with both Canon EF DSLRs and Sony E mirrorless cameras with this Kit from Sigma which pairs the fast and wide 35mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art Lens with an MC-11 Mount Converter/Lens Adapter for full compatibility across systems.

The first of Sigma's Global Vision series, the 35mm offers superb resolution and excellent bokeh at its impressive maximum aperture of f/1.4. Also, with a rounded 9-blade aperture, users will see smooth, pleasing bokeh. For maximum quality, the 35mm Art uses one FLD and four SLD glass elements as well as two aspherical elements and a Super Multi-Layer Coating which all work together to combat aberrations and flare. Operation is fast thanks to a Hyper Sonic AF Motor and it has manual focus override with the large focusing ring. Additionally, it is made from a lightweight, yet durable, Thermally Stable Composite material and has a rugged brass bayonet mount. It is compatible with Sigma's USB Dock for firmware update and fine tuning.

The MC-11 Mount Converter enables the use of Sigma Canon EF-mount lenses on Sony E-mount mirrorless camera bodies, and maintains full lens performance, including autofocus and auto-exposure, as well as in-camera correction technologies. An integrated LED can be used to display select Sigma lens compatibility with the adapted camera body, and the adapter also supports in-camera image stabilization. In order to maintain a high degree of image quality, the interior of the adapter is flocked to reduce reflections, and it also retains full EXIF data to benefit post-production and file management.

  • 35mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art Lens for Canon DSLR Cameras

The 35mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art Lens for Canon DSLR Cameras from Sigma is the first entry into Sigma's Art series of professional lenses, with an emphasis on artistic expression and the creative potential of the lens. With a bright f/1.4 maximum aperture, floating inner focusing system, and Hyper Sonic Motor (HSM) you'll have quick and accurate control over the artistic effects achieved by the lens' high quality elements.

For wide angle photography, this 35mm lens and its circular 9-bladed f/1.4 aperture ensure excellent brightness and blurred background (bokeh) effects. The Super Multi-Layer Coating reduces flare and ghosting and provides sharp and high contrast images even in backlit conditions.

The lens' Hyper Sonic Motor (HSM) and floating inner focusing system ensure that you experience quick, quiet and precise autofocusing whenever you need it. Adjust focus using either autofocus (AF), or full-time manual focus, without having to switch camera modes or change settings - just flick the switch from AF to MF.

For greater build quality and strength, all metallic parts and the new Thermally Stable Composite compound material (TSC), are housed internally. Its brass made bayonet mount has both high accuracy and durability, and a special treatment is applied to its surface giving it greater strength and making it highly resistant to long-term daily use.

    Aperture Range: f/1.4-16
With a bright maximum aperture of f/1.4 this lens allows you to capture images with beautiful defocused background bokeh effects in darker conditions - using faster shutter speeds and lower ISO sensitivities.
    Hyper Sonic Motor (HSM)
This lens' motor is driven by ultrasonic waves to provide quiet, high speed autofocus. This Hyper Sonic Motor (HSM) ensures high speed and quiet AF as well as full-time manual focus override by rotating the focus ring.
    Floating Internal Focus System
For stable focusing, this lens moves its inner lens groups without changing the lens length. It also compensates for astigmatic aberration and provides extremely high optical performance for close-up photos.
    Minimum Focusing Distance: 11.8"
This lens has a minimum focusing distance of 11.8" so you can capture wide-angle close-ups from nearly a foot away.
    Anti-Flare Super Multi-Layer Coating
This lens' coatings reduce lens flare, internal reflections and light scattering that can occur between the surfaces of its glass elements.
USB Dock & SIGMA Optimization Pro Software
Because of its redesigned series of lenses, Sigma developed proprietary software (SIGMA Optimization Pro) and an optional USB docking system that allows you to update the lens' firmware and adjust its parameters such as focus. The 35mm f/1.4 DG HSM A1 Lens is compatible with the USB Dock.
Special & "F" Low Dispersion Elements
This lens incorporates "F" Low Dispersion (FLD) glass elements, which have performance equal to that of fluorite, and Special Low Dispersion (SLD) glass elements. By optimizing the power alignment of the lens, chromatic aberration has been corrected, achieving high image quality through the entire focusing range.
DG Lens for Digital & 35mm Film SLRs
This is a large-aperture lens with wide angles and a short minimum focusing distance. Because of its great peripheral illumination, or lack of vignetting, it is an ideal lens for DSLR Cameras and traditional 35mm SLRs alike.
    Sigma's Artistic A-Series Lens
Sigma has organized all of its interchangeable lenses into three product lines: Contemporary, Art and Sports. The Art line delivers high-level artistic quality with a focus on sophisticated optical performance and abundant expressive power. The SIGMA 35mm f/1.4 DG HSM is the first lens from the Art line. Developed with an emphasis on artistic touch, Sigma's Art line lenses are designed to meet the expectations of users who value a creative, dramatic outcome above compactness and multifunction.
    Front Filter Thread Diameter: 67mm
The 67mm front filter thread is fixed, allowing rotating polarizing filters to be used with the lens.
    9x Circular Aperture Blades
With nine circular blades, the lens' diaphragm delivers very pleasant, soft bokeh background effects.
    Brass Bayonet Mount
This lens incorporates a brass made bayonet mount which has both high accuracy and durability. A special treatment to reinforce it is applied to the surface, giving it greater strength and making it highly durable for long-term use.
    Ease Of Use
For better usability, the designs of the lens cap and AF/MF switch have been improved, as well as the rubberized lens hood attachment. In order to ensure accuracy and precision, all metallic parts and the new Thermally Stable Composite material are housed internally.
Quality Control & Sigma's MTF "A1" Measuring System
Sigma used to measure lens performance with the standard MTF (modulation transfer function) measuring system, using conventional sensors. However, they have since developed a proprietary MTF measuring system - dubbed "A1" - using 46MP resolution Foveon direct image sensors. Previously undetectable high-frequency details are now within the scope of their quality control inspections.

Sigma 35mm f/1.4 reviews

35mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art Lens for Canon EF and MC-11 Mount Converter/Lens Adapter for Sony E Kit is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 7.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from A great combination! I love this lens and 35 mm is now my new favourite focal length! I really like taking evening and night time pictures and this lens @1.4 is very sharp. This adapter/lens combination usually works well for autofocusing videos and stills, though could be a bit faster. I almost always, however, fine tune my focusing manually anyway (with any lens I use) and this is one of the main reasons I ended up switching to the Sony mirrorless system (from Nikon) in the first place - because of the focus assist options that come with the electronic view finder. I really like the position of the manual focus button (next to my left thumb) and I've configured C1 (on the A7RII) for digital zoom (2 click 5x and 3 clicks 12.5x zoom). This way for special shots, after using the initial autofocus option, I can click the manual switch with my left thumb and zoom all the way in (with C1) to confirm focus (the DMF option does not seem to work for some reason). Having said this, I've found I almost never have to manually adjust the focus setting as the autofocus option has almost always been spot on. Another thing I like about the MC-11 is that it will offer a bit more dust protection when switching between Sigma lenses and I will be buying more Sigma lenses.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great lens ok adapter The lens is amazing! Super sharp. The adapter is good, but misses focus a lot and sometimes searches for focus for a couple seconds. Hopefully an update will fix this issue. Overall I'm very happy with this product.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Focus fast but very soft. I was excited to have bought this lens as I needed a wide angle prime to my Sony arsenal which I can also use for my Canon. I tested in broad daylight with shutter speeds of up to 1/5000th. The focus was fast like a native Fe lens, but on close inspection it was soft. I tried F2 as well with the same results. I tested the Sigma 35 on my 5D Mark III with the same results. The MC!! performed as expected. I also tried the MC !! on my 24-70 F2.8 and 85 1.2L II. They performed just as well as the $79 dollar Viltrox adapter. Will be returning both.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Recommend for anyone with a Sony Mirrorless Camera I've been using this with my Sony A7II for a few weeks and it's been really fun working with a prime lens with 1.4 f-stop. It's about half the price of a canon l-lens but from what I've seen from my friends, this is just as good if not better than the canon l-lens. it's heavier than my a7ii so it does feel a bit off-balanced when i'm holding my rig up with one hand, but i got used to it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Lens I have used the canon 35 1.4L for years. This lens is so far beyond what that one is capable of. Probably more like the new L, though for less money. I highly recommend any of the ART series lenses from Sigma.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I would buy this product again and again Love my first sigma art lens. The color tones are amazing and I've shot with a lot of different lenses.
