    WD PR4100 External HDD Reviews

    Solid and Reliable

WD retired my previous model -- prematurely and offered a paltry credit -- saying it would no longer be supported despite functioning reliably. But they've hooked me on the system and it works well for a double back-up system to hold my large music file collection. Easy to transfer the files and even Apple Music playlists. Works a charm.

Be very careful of WD Support of the PR4100!

I have two of the PR4100's. When working the system is extremely nice and quiet! Has a lot of power and the ability to give you a great resource for your data, plex movies, music, business data or anything else you want to store in your own personal cloud. Here are my major issues. I have had three hard drive failures on one system and had to have my case replaced on the other. Replacement of HD's can take for an advance RMA up to 3-4 weeks. If you have a Raid 5 and loose one drive, it is best that you get it replaced to prevent further degradation of your system or even loose all your data. Now lets say you have 56TB of Drive on one of these systems, and 40TB of Data. If the Raid fails your data is gone unless you have a very large back up system. WD support site has your systems data on it after you send them the appropriate purchase information etc. It also has Incidents so you can reflect back on what has happened to your system. The problem twice I have put in RMA's told that I would receive new units and twice, all my warranty information disappeared along with all my incidents. Hard drive information RMA's the same thing occurred. My information disappeared. I was told to put in another RMA, but to do that you have to have a registered product, that disappeared. It latterly took weeks to get this resolved. Many times resending purchase information. Techs who did not want to help and said we will contact you in two to three days! Four days later still no answer. My 56TB system is currently down one drive and has a bay 4 failure. Pulling teeth has been easier than getting this fixed. If you value your data and your equipment check out the support of the company or you could loose millions of dollars worth of data that you have if you think its worth that much, but consider how much it would cost to rebuild!

I upgraded from a EX Ultra2 after 6 years because one of the drives was about to fail. Very easy to use and setup. Works well. Never could get antivirus to work on Ultra2, same here. I mostly use to store photos. WD app is ok for what I use it for. Overall recommended.

Would this product work if a client is off-site but yet still wants access to media files? If so, what's the optimal upload speed out of our building for this to work at a reasonable speed?
    Asked by: James
With the correct configuration, this model can be accessed from off site. There is essentially no optimal upload speed, it will work at any speed, and as with any media speeds, the faster the better.

Access Anywhere Access, edit, and share HD media with clients and colleagues using MyCloud.com and the My Cloud mobile app anywhere you have an Internet connection. The device may also be shared out manually in your router, if you have a static IP, by giving strict access privileges and and exposing the specific internal IP of your drive to the public, though this method is a bit less secure than using the MyCloud service.

If only 2 slots are being used in the WD My Cloud Pro Series 32TB PR4100 4-Bay NAS Server, you can create another RAID. However, this will work best with RAID 5.
