Autodesk 3ds Max 2017 is a comprehensive 3D modeling, animation, and rendering software geared toward filmmakers, animators, graphics artists, video game developers, digital content creators, and other media and entertainment professionals. It features tools for crowd generation, particle animation, and perspective matching. Customize, collaborate, and create 3D content with a workflow designed to be efficient and user-friendly.

This is a one-year subscription to the standard, standalone version of 3ds Max 2017 with Basic Support. Basic Support includes free software updates and web-based tech support with a 1-2 day turn-around time. This subscription version can be accessed by one user from up to three different computers, but only one at a time.

New in 3ds Max 2017

Animation Productivity (Enhanced)
Trackview improvements, such as a new layout, that cater to animators stay persistent between 3ds Max sessions and activations. New tools to manipulate key values and times improve selecting and framing keys in the editor. In the Motion Panel, copy/paste/reset capabilities and fast selection of tracks in list controllers speed up usability.
Text Tool (Enhanced)
Add data-driven information to your scenes. Edit paragraphs, words, or individual letters. 3ds Max 2017 also retains information such as font theme, font style, and glyphs when you copy text from Microsoft Word documents, easing your 2D-to-3D workflow. You can now apply textures, animations, and effects to text as an object that automatically updates if you change the content of the text. In addition, when you search for a font, the font style is displayed. A powerful preset system includes bevel and animation presets. Add presets to your Favorites lists or share them with other users. Custom value strings help you display custom information text, such as the radius of a sphere or the speed of a vehicle in your scene.
Geodesic Voxel and Heatmap Skinning
Generate better skin weighting at a fraction of the time. Run Geodesic Voxel and Heatmap skinning outside of the bind pose, and even on selected areas, to refine your weighting in particular spots more easily. Geodesic Voxel Skinning can handle complex geometry that is not watertight and can contain non-manifold or overlapping components, as is frequently the case with real-world production meshes.
Max Creation Graph Animation Controllers
Author animation controllers in MCG, using a new generation of animation tools that you can create and modify, package, and share. Includes 3 new MCG-based controllers: LookAt Constraint, Ray to Surface Transform Constraint, and Rotation Spring Controller. Create physically based simulation controllers with MCG and the Bullet Physics engine sample integration.
Fast Form Hard Surfaces
Updated Booleans are double precision, which gives more reliable results. Easily add and remove operands, and sort or create nested Booleans. The Bevel Profile Modifier now includes the same bevel controls found in the TextPlus tool, so artists can create their desired bevel or use the same presets found in TextPlus.
UV Mapping (Enhanced)
Performance improvements speed UV navigation and editing 5-10x. Addressing key user requests, texture creation now has better performance and visual feedback, and more efficient workflows. More consistent tool sets simplify the editing and predicable operation, eliminating steps.
Object Tool (Enhanced)
Enhancements to selecting and manipulating objects make modeling, animating, and other tasks more efficient and creative. Artists can now use Working Pivot without having to go to the hierarchy panel by "Pinning Working Pivot." Local align, a new axis align method, tries to line up each axis for a more predictable result when applying different transforms to a sub-object selection. It can be found in the Reference Coordinate System dropdown on the main toolbar. A single hotkey opens a mode to select which sub-object you want. The added ability to do point-to-point selections by holding the Shift key. If nonadjacent elements are selected, point-to-point selection with a preview enables you to see exactly what will be selected.
Text and Shape Map
Create decals and text-based graphics using still or animated 2D objects. By removing the baking step, elements can remain interactive and linked to the original objects. Font changes, content revisions, and shape updates are reflected automatically with this new functionality. In addition, you do not have to leave the 3ds Max project to use objects as a mask to create custom decals and graphics.
Autodesk Raytracer Renderer (ART)
The new ART renderer is a fast, physically-based renderer, ideal for design visualization workflows used in Revit, Inventor, Fusion 360, and other Autodesk applications. With efficient settings, video card agnostic CPU operation, and excellent use of image-based lighting, ART provides quick, photorealistic results for most industrial, product, and architectural exterior rendering. Support for IES and photometric lights from Revit enable you to create highly accurate images of architectural scenes.
Simple Simulation Data Import
Autodesk CFD subscribers can now visualize how data changes over time with 3ds Max lighting and rendering tools. Ideal for nonprogrammers, the Max Creation Graph can be used to animate simulation data in CFD, .CSV, or OpenVDB formats; apply rendering styles; apply CFD velocity fields; and animate airflow splines to make accurate data come to life.
Asset Library
Access 3D content on your local computer and network in a single view, making all content instantly searchable. After finding the perfect asset, you can decide how it works once added to the scene through Xref, merge, or replace. Download the Asset Library from the Autodesk Exchange. Add local or network folders of asset locations to be indexed for fast searching. Use file format Filters to display only the types of files you want to see. Merge, Xref Scene, or Replace content in your current 3ds Max session. Import method for any non-3ds Max file type that is supported by 3ds Max. Drag and drop images into viewports as environment backgrounds or onto objects as material diffuse maps. Connected to Autodesk Seek.
High DPI Display Support
Successfully run 3ds Max on modern HDPI monitors and laptops. 3ds Max now correctly applies Windows display scaling so the UI is more legible on high DPI displays. It also introduces new Qt-based skin that applies the modern appearance as defined in the new visual style guide, as well as modern multiscale icons.
Improved Pipeline Tools Integration
Gain tighter integration with several pipeline tools with an extended and improved Python/.NET toolset. Integrating this programming language as an alternative script language for 3ds Max users enables Python developers to create third-party plug-ins, making new pipeline tools more extensive and accessible.
Scene Converter
With more rendering technology available, consistently move from one renderer to another as well as to real-time engines. Easily migrate scenes between rendering technologies or quickly prepare for real-time engines, including properly setting lights, materials, and other features. Customize and fine-tune the existing conversion scripts via a simple UI to create source-to-target batch conversion rules. As more rendering technologies become available, scene converter capabilities can be extended at any time via new presets from Autodesk and the user community, and the script-based converters can be fine-tuned to meet individual needs.
Game Exporter
With FBX interchange technology, transfer data from 3ds Max (such as models, animation takes, character rigs, textures, materials, LODs, lights, and cameras) into game engines (such as Unity, Unreal Engine, and Stingray).
Live Link
Download Stingray to take advantage of a new live link between 3ds Max and the Stingray engine. Stingray offers a level of tool interaction that greatly reduces time spent in scene creation, iteration, and testing. Live linking enables: Geometry and camera connections between Stingray and 3ds Max (to assess and review 3D assets and scenes in an interactive 3D environment), and the ability to make modifications in 3ds Max and see updates in Stingray right away with a one-click workflow.
Better Support for Stingray Shaders
Gain better support for physically based shaders when working with Stingray through ShaderFX enhancements. Easily transfer materials created in ShaderFx into Stingray and enjoy visual consistency in both tools.
Integrated Creative Market 3D Content Store
Buy and sell assets to use in your projects on the Creative Market online marketplace. Browse for high-quality 3D content directly from the 3ds Max interface.
Max Creation Graph (Enhanced)
This node-based tool-creation environment enables you extend 3ds Max with geometric objects and modifiers by creating graphs in a visual environment, similar to the Slate material editor. Choose from hundreds of node types that you can connect to create new tools and visual effects. Includes new MCG nodes that enable the procedural creation, manipulation, and use of shapes and splines. In addition, you can now import data from bitmaps and simulation data like CSV or Open VDB files. These can be tracked with your scene as assets so you can animate accurate simulation data inside the scene. You can also add buttons to your MCG tools via the signal parameter, or color pickers via the new color parameter.
Scene Explorer and Layer Manager (Enhanced)
Work with complex scenes more easily with performance and stability improvements in the Scene Explorer and Layer Manager.
Design Workspace
More easily access the main features of 3ds Max with the Design Workspace. Import design data to create impressive visualizations. Following a task-based logical system, the Design Workspace provides easy access to object placement, lighting, rendering, modeling, and texturing tools.
Template System
Accelerate your scene-creation process with new on-demand templates that provide standardized startup configurations. Share templates across teams and offices with easy import/export options. Create new templates or tailor existing templates to your workflows. Built-in settings for rendering, environments, lighting, and units provide more accurate project results.
