The matte black ToughArmor 2.5" SATA HDD & SSD Mobile Rack from Icy Dock is a small form factor device for use in 3.5" device bays . The heavy-duty metal construction can withstand harsh enterprise-type environments. With full metal design, the rack is suitable for industrial and medical devices that may require a flammability rating, as it complies with flammability requirements. The full metal design also allows efficient heat dissipation from hard drives throughout the mobile rack. In addition, the Multi-Flow technology effectively routes airflow correctly for passive cooling in key ventilation slots on the front, rear, top and bottom. The anti-vibration technology and EMI grounding are used to provide a stable environment for the hard drives or SSDs. The front of the mobile rack includes a status LED to indicate when the drive is powered on, off, and accessed. Active Power Technology (APT) allows the status LED to be on only when a hard drive is inserted into the enclosure. The drive is secured by technologies such as the Eagle-hook lock system and metal 2-segment safeguard key. The 2-segment key lock provides extra protection against theft of hard drives, as well as safeguards sensitive data.
The full metal, EZ Slide Mini Tray allows interchangeability of data between multiple systems with other compatible ToughArmor products. It makes drive interchangeability and maintenance completely hassle free, in case of a hard drive failure. With a simple swap of the hard drive, the overall down time is reduced, especially if this occurs when it is time-sensitive. It can be used in various enterprise systems including medical, media servers, military and law enforcement deployment, as well as manufacturing conditions such as embedded control systems and factory automation systems. The trays are also designed to accommodate 7 to 15mm height hard drive and SSD, creating a 2.5" hot-swap bay for any standard SATA hard drives and SSDs. While the tray is not installed in the rack, the anti-dust flap feature helps prevent dust from entering into the mobile rack.Ask Our Experts800.952.1815

What do i need to purchase to use this as a standalone unit?
As your laptop does not have external sata or SAS interfaces, only Thunderbolt or USB, there would need to be a computer in between to manage the connection as well as disperse the drives properly into your laptop's file system. A computer basically, or file/drive server. This server would interface to each physical drive via SATA and provide connectivity via USB or some other consumer level connection method. This box cannot serve these drives alone without an actual computer with processor to handle traffic management and device connectivity.

question
can it work with any PC hard drive?
It's platform agnostic. You can use any 2.5 SSD drive that will work with your OS.
