Peak Design Version 1 overview

  • 1Description

Designed for the photographer, traveler, urban commuter, and everyone in between, the heritage tan Everyday Messenger 13" Version 1 from Peak Design showcases smart features to meet your day-to-day needs. The Messenger holds a full-frame DSLR and up to two lenses, thanks to the two origami-inspired adjustable touch-fastening padded dividers. Simply remove the dividers if you prefer to carry books or overnight essentials. Your up to 13" laptop can be stored separately in a rear, padded compartment with an interior sleeve for your tablet or important documents.

Smaller accessories like extra batteries, memory cards, or even a smartphone can be tucked inside the expandable front access panel featuring color-coded stitching to help you further organize gear. An interior slip pocket is suitable for a passport or extra cash when traveling. Additional small items can be stored in the slim zippered pocket under the messenger flap or in one of the two side slip pockets. Keys can be kept handy thanks to the hidden key/ID tether with an anchor link connector in one of the side pockets.

Inclement weather is not to be feared thanks to the weatherproof waxed 500D Kodra synthetic canvas padded shell and DWR undercoat. Exterior zippers are weatherproof, and stress points are reinforced and bar-tacked. A soft yet durable poly-cotton interior is gentle on your gear, and strap ends are tucked away into the sidewalls of the messenger.

The MagLatch adjustable latching system allows your bag to expand and contract without losing shape or sacrificing time transferring contents into another bag. A magnetic clasp and four ladder locking points create multiple options for you to secure your gear. Two dedicated capture clip attachment points and a top zippered opening allow for quick camera access. The 2" wide messenger strap easily converts into a low-slung shoulder strap, while a stabilizer strap can be worn cross-body for better weight distribution, or as a trolley strap for convenient coupling when traveling with rolling luggage.

Updated V2 features (May 2018): Luggage pass-through on the rear panel, upgraded FlexFold dividers, more durable fabric on small internal pockets, and upgraded weatherproofing treatment to the exterior shell

    Peak Design Version 1 reviews

Everyday Messenger 13" Version 1 (Heritage Tan) is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 15.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Definitely recommend The layout of this bag is incredible: Quick and easy access to camera and lenses, perfect cell spot, easy to cram a 13 inch laptop in there plus an iPad or Kindle, and nice organization for SD cards, filters, etc. The bag is light, meaning less extra weight, but seems quite sturdy. Not a great bag for hiking in my experience thus far (I don't think any shoulder bag is), but near perfect for exploring a city. If it's small enough, the bag holds a tripod reasonably well, but I'd recommend trying out your tripod with the bag in the store if you're interested in that. This will definitely be my go-to bag for some time to come.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Seemingly defies the laws of physics. Very streamlined look from the outside, but mind-boggling room on the inside. Holds a Nikon D800 with tripod plate with an 80-200 zoom attached; and the front clasp still closes down to the second rung from the bottom. It was also possible to just slip a large iPad Pro in the back flap. Seems to defy the laws of physics.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I wish I found this bag 5 bags ago. I was skeptical at first, but I do really like this bag. It's well made and versatile. It's nicely balanced and feel lighter than some other bags I have with the same gear. On a daily basis, I keep a Nikon D7200 with a Sigma 10-20 on it, and a 35mm tucked away. Also in the bag is a sb-700 flash. Tucked away in pockets or other other interior spaces are remote triggers and receivers and an assortment of caps, batteries and other small accessories. There is still room for my knit hat and a pair of gloves too.. oh.. and a pocket size camera to boot! In the rear pouch I keep a notebook and occasionally a tablet. My point? It fits so much more in a smaller space then any bag I'm familiar with.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Not the perfect bag, but really, really good Good everyday carry bag for anyone around my size - 5'10, 160lb. It takes some time and thinking to organize internal space for your own needs, but after that it can be the best messenger bag. Pros: - Holds a lot of equipment for its size - Sturdy and rain resistant - Doesn't draw unnecessary attention - Dividers are very convenient for organizing items inside Cons: - Tends to flip when placed on flat surface, letting your equipment to fall out if opened. Don't let that happen! - Side pockets are very tight and narrow - Left and right sides have soft areas, which will not protect stored stuff from hitting something hard as all other sides (there is no workaround to that without decreasing internal space. I'd recommend to distribute your equipment accordingly, so if you hit something, and sooner or later you will, it will be protected with case/pouch) - Top pocket is nearly useless if you're planning to use top opening for pulling out something bigger than mirrorless camera + small lens. What it holds for me: D500 + 16-80mm lens (hood attached ready for shooting, not covering zoom ring), 85mm f/1.8G, 50mm f/1.8G, SB-5000 speedlight + diffuser and filters, batteries for flash, charging cradle for camera battery and PD Slide strap. Accessories pocket: spare memory cards, XQD card reader, polarizing filter in hard case, cleaning cloth, PD Cuff strap and a wallet. Side pockets: keys, cleaning cloth, 5 flashlight, front lens caps when shooting. Phone goes to dedicated pocket. Laptop compartment is useless for anything but a few papers with this load, but you probably still can fit in a tablet. Will all that, camera is still accesible through top zipper opening, and latch locks to default rail (second from the bottom). Impressive. As any other messenger bag, it will not go easy on the shoulder you carry it on. Especially when it's loaded with a lot of gear. Its strap has a few minor drawbacks. First, it tends to loosen up a bit when carried around, but since its length can be easily adjusted, it's something I can live with. Second, (it may be related to how much weight I stuffed into), it squeaks. Not the strap itself, but those small round metal plates where strap connects to the bag. Yep, I'm making squeaking sounds walking around :D Bright side - it can be heard only in silent environment, so it doesn't annoy you and people around constantly. Third and the most annoying - sometimes it unhooks when bag placed to rest a bit, so when you pick it up, you're risking to unintentionally smack the bag on the ground with all the stuff inside. Happened to me like three times per the first day of use, luckily, every time I noticed that before I picked it up. May be the strap will get softer and hold the hook better with time, but I still have to pay attention to that every time I pick up the bag. I wish they were selling those new dividers, which go with backpacks, but in size for the messenger bag.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great, bag, great design Light weight with lots of good design to get to my mirrorless lenses, camera body, flash, iPad and MacBook. I would have liked a few slots for some analog baggage like pens but for the most part, this is the best camera bag I own and it doesn't look like a camera bag which makes it even better.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from LOVE this bag! As a street fashion photographer who walks the streets of NYC for hours at a time, comfort and ease of use were my two top priorities in a new bag. The sturdiness of the Peak bag makes it easy to carry all day. The thoughtfulness of the design makes accessing what I need, fast and easy. The adjustable dividers are pretty amazing too. The contents of my bag changes a little sometimes and folding the dividers for a custom fit and weight has been invaluable.
