    Brother MFC-J985DW reviews

    MFC-J985DW All-in-One Inkjet Printer is rated 3.7 out of 5 by 23.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from works well not good for specialty papers Solid printer. Only catch is if you need to print cardstock or labels you must feed one sheet at a time...

Rated 1 out of 5 by from This was a mistake. Bought this after reading several reviews. However- I am very disappointed. The best I can say is wireless printing works fairly well. The negatives: 1. Windows 10 install from using the Brother install app not successful, had to be installed inside Windows as a generic. (Apple install in contrast was easy and quick) 2. Prints VERY SLOW compared to prior HP & Canon printers. 3. Paper tray low capacity (I knew this before buying) and fiddly to load. 4. Quality of graphics and photos (e.g., from web pages) much lower than expected. I am beyond my 30 day return window, otherwise would ditch this dog.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Not the easiest to setup in Linux, but a good machine There is nary a Windows machine in our house, and I checked for Linux drivers and software before getting this printer. I also read CNET reviews and this one is in the list of top ten all in one machines for best buys. Cartridge prices are a lot less than cheap printers which will eat you out of house and home for ink costs. This is a CMYK printer, so if you do graphical printing and run low on (for example) yellow, you can replace just that cartridge, not an entire expensive triple pack like cheap printers. The black cartridge is about half again larger. The biggest problem for getting it up and running in Linux Mint 18 wasn't anything with the printer as it was the lousy instructions on Bother's support website. I found much better info on a Linux forum about ignore the instructions on Brother's site and did it their way instead. (Using the downloads from Brother's site) Now, one Dell Optiplex desktop, two HP Elitebook laptops, (All running Linux Mint 18) two tablets, and an Android phone can wireless print and scan. The phone and tablets use the Bother iPrint&Scan app. The laptops print as any other printer, and the scanning is done via Xsane which is included in Brothers software package. You can check ink levels remotely too. Setting up the printer itself was a snap, with an easy to navigate touch screen. The WiFi wizard found the router and got it ready to go within a minute. Putting in the cartridges was easy and the slots are well marked. You have to raise the lid to access the USB cable socket, and that wasn't obvious from the quick start sheet, but probably 99% of users will be wireless anyway. (With Linux, the first run/setup has to be via USB, after which it's wireless) I'm surprised at the size of this machine. It replaced a monster of an HP - this is about half the size.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Good overall functionality and economical printing costs Easy wireless setup for Apple products and online scanning out of the box with no issues. First printed page jammed so hope this printer is ok. Paper tray only holds about 20 sheets so if you do alot of printing this is not the all in one printer for you. Wish the paper tray issue had been more clearly discussed in the description as I thought it held 50 sheets. Printer is a bit noisy when in operation vs my prior HP printer and is not the fastest to start. But once started the printing is quickly done and print quality is adequate for household use.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A good, reliable printer This printer seems to work well for the rather minimal uses I need. It was easy to install and has worked flawlessly for the past few weeks I have owned it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good printer so far but could be a little quieter I purchased this because of the high yield printing feature. It was easy to set up since the instructions were very clear. The menu is all touch screen so that makes it nice. It prints well and quality is pretty good (though I will say it's not THE BEST). Scanning was good too (I'd give it a B+) since I scanned in some pictures to test it. Color isn't as vibrant but I think it's works just fine for my use purpose. This is probably not the best printer if you want high quality photo finish but great for every day paper printing.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Does the job squeakily Easy setup. The document feed works great. The colors are good. There is only ONE button... all functions have to be accessed on the screen (copy-fax, etc). The Menu screen is SMALL but the main functions are easy to access. It SQUEAKS as it feeds paper through the printer and through the document feed. It DOES print heavy 110lb card stock through the manual feeder in the back but ONLY ONE sheet at a time. And the card stock has to be fed "just so". But still does very well for the price. I would buy it again.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from I would recommend this product. After two weeks it seems to be a good printer, it has a noticeable sound to it when it's printing and it sounds like it's printing slowly but it kicks them out quickly. It is a fast printer not the fastest, but fast enough. The print quality is good so far, I haven't printed any photos yet. It also has an unusual two year warranty. The big question is durability. I have owned two Canon printers with superior print quality but short lives and poor ink management. We'll see.
