Manfrotto 410 Geared Head Reviews

Great - Easy to Use and Sturdy

This is a great geared head. Smooth movement and secure mount. The quick-release knobs allow large adjustments, and the turn knobs allow you to adjust to just the right place. However, when using it for astronomical purposes, you need to reverse the quick release plate on the camera to get from 30 degrees to 90 degrees up. The standard 410PL does not work well reversed since it impedes access to Nikon battery. I ended up mounting my 200PL quick release to the 410PL plate.

Almost very good

I appreciate the sturdiness, the accuracy, and, in general, the high quality. But day one of using it, the tiny spring on the plate release lever popped off and I have never been able to get it back the way it was. It's just disappointing for an item of this price and precision that a silly little spring comes apart. It's not worth my time to return/repair it so now I live with it.

Wears out over time

I couldn't agree more with the review that mentioned that after a couple years, you start to get movement in the head, especially in the up/down tilt. Also, a major design flaw with the release lever for the face plate that attaches the camera. If the tiny spring inside there breaks or comes loose, you'll need to look on the internet as how to fix it. Don't take it back to your camera store, they might tell you it can't be fixed and say that you need to buy a new head! This actually happened to me. I have just experienced my third such problem with this head and I'm done. I'll be buying a different brand next.

I've had three and ALL wobble in time

I've owned three of these in 20 years as a commercial architectural photographer and they've ALL suffered from a wiggle/rocking they develop after about 2 years. I've watched every YouTube video and read every review and it's a well known problem that has yet to be fixed by Manfrotto. I've adjusted every screw according to recommendations but nothing works. Once you're locked into place, it'll rock slightly forward or backward which is a problem when you're photographing architecture. I'll get everything adjusted and then the slightest touch will rock it forward or back by a half a degree enough so that you need to recompose. Basically, you can't touch the camera after head adjustment. That means, no reviewing shots on the viewfinder or making any adjustments. It's especially difficult shooting evening shots. I'm kind to my equipment but I do use them often. I gave it 3 stars because there's really no other comparable head like it. The 405 is too large for a DSLR so I've never used that to compare this to. I purchased my first one from the store I used to work at in Sacramento and the second one came from B&H and I wasn't going to buy a new one again so I got it used on eBay. This one developed the problem after a year and I've been shooting with it like this for the last 5 years. I'm going to shop around as it's time to replace this 3rd one.

Was concerned about size but it's well worth it

I needed to replace my Manfrotto 460mg head that I mostly used photographing editorial portraits and architectural interiors on dslr and sometimes a small 4x5. I had chosen that one due to its size and ease of fitting in my bag. I was hesitant to buy the 410 due to concerns about the larger size but it's really not too much bigger. Working with it though is a huge world of difference. Definitely worth making the switch. I got used to the way it handles immediately and the gears make all the difference lining up a tight composition.

Finally got a geared head

After one day with this geared head, I'm so happy I finally have it. Makes leveling and fine tuning so much easier. I purchased this one over the much more expensive one mostly because of the cost difference, but after using it, I understand what people are saying about how close the gears are to the head. It's a bit tight, but for me, the price I paid for this is worth it that inconvenience.

Love/Hate relationship

I've had on and off issues with this piece. When it works, I absolutely love it. However, about every 4-6 months the spring that actuates the lever to lock/release the top plate jumps position, and the lever no longer works. It is a time consuming and frustrating fix each time, but is not something that should happen. Would have to call the design flawed. Very solid with a Canon 500mm f4 prime mounted to it when it works.

Well designed, horribly made. Don't waste your money.

I've been using different versions of Manfrotto's 3047 pan-tilt head since the 1980s, and have never had a problem. So I was excited to find a deal on an unused 410 geared head. After 3 days of use, the gears began failing. Knobs would become stiff over parts of the range of motion. Sometimes almost impossible to turn. Then the gears started slipping. Manfrotto has a good idea here, but they chose to make the gears out of cream cheese. Once they bind up, you cannot use the the head. This is a total fail, and I'm shocked that this venerable company would release such an atrocity on their customers. What I do like: the ability to unlock each knob and make quick ungeared movements. Other complaints. the proprietary release plate is a dated design without any advantages. Manfrotto should offer a choice between their old hex plate (rock solid) and an Arca-Swiss clamp (versatile and industry standard).
