    Macally M-S250U3 reviews

    M-S250U3 Aluminum USB 3.0 External 2.5" SATA HDD/SSD Enclosure is rated 3.0 out of 5 by 2.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great, inexpensive enclosure. light, solid, well-made. Only complaint would be the tiny screws you need to get at to open it up. wouldn't recommend it for someone looking for a quick-switch option.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Poorly Made I purchased this to house a Crucial SSD. I thought the silver might match my MacBook Pro better than some of the cheap, black plastic cases and I thought the aluminum would give it a bit of a high end feel. I was wrong. Completely. When I unboxed the enclosure, I could feel right away that it was CHEAP, CHEAP, CHEAP. It had a tinny, hollow, cheap sound to it. The anodizing or paint on the enclosure was a bright, textured silver that was very shiny and very slick (not sure how they managed to pull of shiny/slick/textured all at once, but they did it). The drive requires screws which I was okay with because it's not often that you're swapping drives in and out of enclosures (there are better methods if you're doing a lot of hot swapping of drives). They include a small screwdriver and a USB cable. When I pulled the screws out of the drive and the cover came off, I could see that the metal they tapped for the screws was so thin that it actually blew out on one side of each tapped hole (so you had essentially a threaded C for the screw). I slid the drive in and screwed the front plate back into place at which point one of the screws cross-threaded about 90% of the way into the enclosure because of the blown-out threads. I couldn't get the screw any further in and it wouldn't come out. The screw then stripped when I tried a higher quality screwdriver to try and back it out and it was doomed. I decided to ignore it and went ahead and used the drive as it was since the head of the screw was ALMOST flush. The enclosure would drop connection, stuff was taking forever, it was just a buggy experience. Getting my drive back out resulted in me having to destroy the enclosure (not hard given how flimsy it was) and a good pry with a sturdy flat-head screwdriver popped the cross-threaded screw out of it's half-blown hole without damaging my drive. Stay away from this enclosure. There are TONS of options out there that may not match your Mac, but they'll hold up better.
