Featuring a clean industrial design that is lightweight and promotes passive cooling, the Lightstar 150-Watt Tungsten Fresnel Light from ikan is a small yet powerful lighting instrument. It incorporates a 1.9" temperature-resistant Fresnel lens that throws a hard tungsten-balanced light, and it features an 11° to 55° spot/flood adjustment. The worm-drive focusing mechanism employed by the fixture is reliable and well established.
The aluminum housing minimizes the weight of the fixture, while helping to dissipate heat. Access to the inside of the light for bulb changes is via a thumbscrew on the back of the fixture that allows the top of the chassis to slide forward revealing the internal bulb socket, reflector, and focusing mechanism. A 90° baby-pin receiver allows you to mount the fixture on top of a stand, or you can alternately insert a C-stand arm or similar through the receiver. The yoke features a cord wrap post and cord for coiling the power cord on the yoke, and the fixture includes a 4-leaf barndoor setup that you can rotate to set your light spill control.
The fixture's small size makes it idea for fitting into small places and providing just a little bit of light onto your subject. You can use this for a hair light, or as a kicker to brighten up a specific part of your image. It is suitable for use as a backlight, or eyelight when you want to accentuate the eyes of your subject.
Borosilicate Fresnel Lens
The fixture incorporates a 1.9" temperature-resistant borosilicate Fresnel lens. The Fresnel lens allows the light to be more efficient and provides better control of the light than an open-face fixture.
The fixture's lens softens the light emitted by the bulb (bulb not included), enlarging the point-source nature of the bulb's filament. However, the light emitted by the fixture is still considered hard, just not as harsh in appearance as the light from a bare bulb. You can add diffusion to the fixture to soften the light further, use compatible soft boxes (not included), or bounce the light for a large soft source.
Removing the barndoors allows you to position the yoke above the fixture, so that you can undersling the fixture for alternate mounting possibilities. Remember to replace the barndoors after you have mounted the light.
A spring-loaded safety minimizes the chance that the barndoors (or optional scrims) will fall out of the fixture.
