Sennheiser MKE 440 Overview

The MKE 440 from Sennheiser is a compact stereo shotgun microphone that predominately captures focused stereo sound from within the direction of filming and rejects the majority of off-axis noise from outside the camera focus. The microphone utilizes two mini-shotgun elements that are mounted in a V-shape arrangement, which outperforms mini AB, MS, or XY setups.

The mic includes a 3-level sensitivity switch and a high-pass filter to remove rumble. The MKE 400 is powered by two AAA batteries and offers an operating time of 100 hours. The microphones are internally shock-mounted to prevent handling noise, and the stainless steel micro-mesh offers protection against wind. Additionally, an optional hair cover is available for strong wind applications.

  • Suppression of ambience and background noise
  • Built-in elastic suspension and wind protection

question

Can this mike be connected with a computer for voice over recording?
Asked by: Sergio
The MKE-440 is designed as an on-camera stereo microphone. Connection to a computer may require an adapter cable depending on the computer model. For computers that share a jack for both mic and headphone the Rode SC4 adapter is required. https://bhpho.to/2hINvaL

Will the newer iPhones work with this and a lighting adapter?
Asked by: Anonymous
No. The mic is stereo with a trs plug, the iphone lightning adapter is a trrs connector intended to input a mono mic and output stereo headphones. Besides the plug mismatch there may also be an impedance or level mismatch as the Sennheiser is a powered mic. You may be able to find a specific lightning adapter that will address both issues but read the specifications carefully.

question

Is the effective range on this new mic farther than the MEK 600 ( 12') ?
Asked by: Victor
The MKE-440 is a mini sized stereo mic unlike the MKE-600 which is a mono shotgun. As such it offers a wider and less directional pickup The MKE-440 is sized closer to the MKE-400.

question

can I record sound only, by connecting the MKE 440 to my iPhone?
Asked by: Sergio
Since the iPhone and similar smartphones only support a single channel (mono) mic input, using a stereo mic connected to the headset jack is not recommended and will not operate correctly. In addition an adapter is required for compatibility. Standard mics are not able to be directly connected. A solution would be a mono mic such as the Sennheiser MKE 400 along with the Rode SC4 adapter for connection. There are also several mics designed for smartphone use such as the Rode VideoMic Me.
