HP 8720 overview

  • 1Description

Save space, time, and resources with the wireless-capable OfficeJet Pro 8720 All-in-One Inkjet Printer from HP, which packs printing, scanning, copying, and faxing features into a single unit. This advanced model is also Instant Ink Ready so users will always have a fresh cartridge at the ready. At its core, the 8720 is an excellent printer with a resolution of 2400 x 1200 dpi and ISO print speeds of 24 ppm in black and 20 ppm in color. A draft mode can boost this speed to 37 ppm while Thermal Inkjet technology ensures sharp, vivid images and text. The unit is able to produce two-sided prints at a rate of 20 ppm in black or 17 ppm in color and can create borderless images at up to 8.5 x 11" or A4 sizes.

Automatic duplexing extends to both copying and scanning due to the inclusion of a 50-sheet ADF. Both the legal-size flatbed and ADF feature an optical resolution of 1200 dpi for crisp, sharp images and reproductions. For general media handling, this unit offers a 250-sheet input tray and a 50-sheet ADF, which can both work with a range of documents and media types up to 8.5 x 14" in size.

Equipped with built-in Wi-Fi and Ethernet connectivity the 8720 can be added to an existing network with ease. All of these settings and modes can be intuitively accessed via the 4.3" Color Graphic Display (CGD) touchscreen on the front panel. NFC and Wi-Fi Direct features allow users to connect directly from mobile devices for immediate printing needs, while it is compatible with many services for working seamlessly with a variety of devices. For those desiring a direct, simple connection a USB 2.0 port is available.

Standard print languages included HP PCL 3 GUI and HP PCL 3 Enhanced.
Can accept optional print tray to expand capacity to 500 sheets.
Legal-sized flatbed works with documents as large as 8.5 x 14".
Works with media ranging in size from 3 x 5" to 8.5 x 14".
Mobile printing support or HP ePrint, Apple AirPrint, Android OS Enablement Printing, and Mopria-certified devices.
Monthly duty cycle of 30,000 pages with a recommended monthly volume of 250-2,000 pages.
Instant Ink Ready
This printer is immediately ready for HP's Instant Ink Program which, for a small monthly fee, allows users to automatically have their printer notify HP when it is running low on ink in order to have a fresh cartridge shipped to your door. This system guarantees that you will always have a cartridge ready to go and keeps you from needing to constantly monitor ink levels.

    HP 8720 reviews

OfficeJet Pro 8720 All-in-One Inkjet Printer is rated 3.3 out of 5 by 68.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent features, from printing to scanning We (as a family) have migrated to this printer from OfficeJet Pro K5400d and this one meets all our needs from aspects of features and performance. For scanning we use scanning to a network drive folder mostly, so that scans are accessible from any computer in the house. Two-sided scanning via feeder works without problems. Printing is done in various ways, from obvious over-the-network to sending a document to the printer's e-mail address when outside of the home and it waits for you when you are back. Performance is good enough for our family needs (couple of hundreds pages per month), nobody is complaining about having to wait.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Nothing but problems! Buyer Beware! I am on my second 8720 since HP sent me a replacement for the original I bought. I have been having the same problem with the replacement that I had with the original. I have wasted more paper with this printer since it chooses at random times to NOT print the full page of my documents or puts random lines on the pages. This is a work printer too so I need a reliable machine. And this is definitely not reliable since I have to check every time that everything printed. I have been on the phone with HP support so many times and I am so frustrated since the problem has not resolved!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from FANTASTIC PRINTER and ALL in ONE I purchased the 8720 last month, and it is a fantastic printer, very happy with the performance, flawless internet, cloud synchronization, and installation. Downloaded software and all installed without an issue. I also signed up for the HP InstaInk program, and it's awesome, considering my monthly printing habits it's a great deal and peace of mind. I scan a lot of documents too, and it works perfectly. Great touch screen for a printer, built in software updated without any issues over a wireless connection.Wish it had another tray for the legal paper, but I knew that when I purchased it. If I had to do it again, I would get the model with it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Printer So Far Just got mine today and it only took a few minutes to set up on Windows 10. I had a little trouble with streaks in photo prints but called HP support and resolved the problem quickly. Text quality is exceptional and much better than my Epson WF-4630. It is a little different in that you can't place a piece of photo paper on top of a stack of regular paper in the tray to print a photo. You have to remove all regular paper and put the single piece of photo paper in the tray. Photo quality is then very good. I had two Epson WF-4630 printers and the print heads failed after about a year. I hope this one does better. I am also trying the InstantInk program which looks pretty good from a cost standpoint and the printer actually contacts HP and orders the ink automatically . . . . pretty slick! The only negative was that it was difficult to figure out where to call for support.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Don't trust this one with important documents This printer worked well for about 2 weeks, but then it stopped printing parts of my documents. Sometimes this is a strip of the whole page, sometimes it is just random words in a paragraph, but I cannot get it to reliably print. It isn't a faded print either, it just doesn't show up at all and there is no indication that there might be missing text. This is vital to my business and has already caused many issues with items missing from orders. I've changed ink cartridges and updated and cleaned everything I can, but to no avail. Avoid this printer at all costs if you require accuracy in your print outs, especially for business. Other than this glaring issue, the functionality is solid, but difficult to navigate.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Does not support many standard paper sizes I bought this printer to replace my HP photosmart C410A. It had died mid project. The project involved printing around 200 holiday cards and envelopes for business partners. My photosmart supported the A7 size without issue using custom paper sizes. Unfortunately, what I found immediately with the Officejet Pro 8720 is that it only supports a small set of standard paper and envelope sizes. It does not support A7 envelopes and it does not support custom sizes on Windows. The user manual for this device claims that that custom paper sizes are supported on Windows and Mac. It is clear from reading other sources and speaking with HP that custom sizes are not supported on Windows, despite what the user manual states. I also found the printer to be squealing after only 2 hours of attempting to print on A7 envelopes. This may be good printer, but only if you use the most common standard paper sizes. I am very disappointed that HP has chosen to remove functionality in its printers that it previously supported.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice printer I overbought when purchasing this printer as I use it for my home office with probably less than 100 pages printed/copied per month but I was looking for a high end inkjet printer with lots of features that will last. Have only had this printer for one month but so far it has performed excellently with no problems. This printer/copier is much faster than the older HP OfficeJet that it replaced. I love that I can e-mail files to it from wherever and find them nicely printed in the tray waiting for me to get home. I also appreciate being able to e-print from my iPhone and iPad directly to my printer without having to turn on my PC. I have not tried to use the Fax function as yet so I cannot give a review on that feature but everything else works great!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from HAD PROBLEMS Unit would not shut down! Would simply stay in "shutting down" mode for hours. Then the printing issue: Would print a text page and take 4-6 minutes!! Then setup: Would not setup in any easy format. Too many issues: 1) would display unit as 8500 model in my printer lineup 2) the disc would not load 3) opted for online upgrading, this worked but now had several printers listed in my printer lineup: a) 8500 printer, b) 8500 fax, c) 8720 printer, d) 8720 fax --- and I could not delete the 8500 lineup!! It was a terrible experience -- the sad part is I love HP printers. Have an 8600 for several years with NO problems. Wish they would bring that model back!!
