HP 8740 overview

  • 1Description

Save space, time, and resources with the wireless-capable OfficeJet Pro 8740 All-in-One Inkjet Printer from HP, which packs printing, scanning, copying, and faxing features into a single unit. This advanced model also provides an additional 250-sheet paper tray for handling large jobs and is Instant Ink Ready so users will always have a fresh cartridge at the ready. At its core, the 8740 is an excellent printer with a resolution of 2400 x 1200 dpi and ISO print speeds of 24 ppm in black and 20 ppm in color. A draft mode can boost this speed to 36 ppm while Thermal Inkjet technology ensures sharp, vivid images and text. The unit is able to produce two-sided prints at a rate of 20 ppm in black or 17 ppm in color and can create borderless images at up to 8.5 x 11" or A4 sizes.

Automatic duplexing extends to both copying and scanning due to the inclusion of a 50-sheet ADF. Both the flatbed and ADF feature an optical resolution of 1200 dpi for crisp, sharp images and reproductions. For general media handling, this unit offers two 250-sheet input trays and a 50-sheet ADF, all of which can work with a range of documents and media types up to 8.5 x 14" in size.

Equipped with built-in Wi-Fi and Ethernet connectivity the 8740 can be added to an existing network with ease. All of these settings and modes can be intuitively accessed via the 4.3" Color Graphic Display (CGD) touchscreen on the front panel. Also, a front USB port permits printing from or scanning to mobile storage devices. NFC and Wi-Fi Direct features allow users to connect directly from mobile devices for immediate printing needs, while it is compatible with many services for working seamlessly with a variety of devices. For those desiring a direct, simple connection a USB 2.0 port is available.

Standard print languages included HP PCLXL (PCL6), native PDF, and HP PostScript Level 3 emulation.
Legal-sized flatbed works with documents as large as 8.5 x 14".
Works with media ranging in size from 3 x 5" to 8.5 x 14".
Mobile printing support or HP ePrint, Apple AirPrint, Android OS Enablement Printing, and Mopria-certified devices.
Monthly duty cycle of 30,000 pages with a recommended monthly volume of 250-2,000 pages.
Instant Ink Ready
This printer is immediately ready for HP's Instant Ink Program which, for a small monthly fee, allows users to automatically have their printer notify HP when it is running low on ink in order to have a fresh cartridge shipped to your door. This system guarantees that you will always have a cartridge ready to go and keeps you from needing to constantly monitor ink levels.

    HP 8740 reviews

OfficeJet Pro 8740 All-in-One Inkjet Printer is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 57.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Meaningful improvements on the 8600 series. This printer is an updated model of the 8600 series. I bought it to replace a several-year-old 8600 series printer whose automatic feeder was failing. While I was annoyed by the failure, the old printer had provided good service for a long while. The 8740 has a better footprint. It is slightly smaller and no longer has the awkward paper handling cartridge sticking out the back, which allows it to fit into spaces more easily. The paper path in changed significantly with a noticeable speed improvement. A larger control panel is a plus. Much easier access to print cartridges is good, but changing the cartridge number obsoleted my cartridge inventory which is a normal lousy HP practice. Overall, it is still an excellent high-end printer at a reasonable price point.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Replaced My HP 8620 All IN One Easily Printer worked fairly easy right out of the box. Had to plug in cables then shut everything down and bring it back up to find the Proper I.P. address. The rest of it was just loading the software and teaching Devices how to use the wireless air print Capabilities. Last printer HP8620 had a tray that had to be extended to catch printed pages otherwise would fall on floor. The 8740 feeds printed pages back onto itself with out having to pull out an extension. The Automatic document feeder works perfectly.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Never wait minutes per page for large PDFs anymore On my HP8630 OfficeJet Pro (PCL3 driver), I printed a photo-rich PDF file on "Best" setting, and it took 90 seconds to print. I printed the same file on "Best" on the HP 8740 (PostScript), and it took 15 seconds. What a speed difference for PDF files!!! HP inkjet were notoriously slow with PCL, but not with PostScript, and this inkjet, along with HP576dw, HP577dw, inkjet.. This printer may not have high-tech aesthetics, and may be shaped like a turtle sticking it's head out of its shell, but you'll never wait minutes per page for large PDFs anymore!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best HP printer ever! I bought this to replace my 8600 Pro - which was my second of that model. The 8740 is SO much faster in duplex printing! I also love the photo enlargement and reduction. This printer is an absolute delight. And I love the move from black to white or 'bone'. Its operation is smoother, faster and quieter than the 8600 in every way. A real advance. I recommend it unconditionally!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Wish my old printer still worked! First couple days it worked fine, Slower than my old model the 8600. I started having problems with the print queue. The printer would print but the computer thought that it was still printing. After following the numerous possible fixes, none which helped. I had to uninstall the printer and reinstall. Since I did that I cannot access the scan from my computer. I have to use the scan button on the printer itself. Which involves more steps and more time. I would not recommend this printer. It is supposed t be a "better" printer, but all it is is time consuming, slower and very annoying. Also I am still trying to figure out how to change the margins. The area for the margin size is grayed out and you can't click on it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from GREAT PRODUCT The size of printer. The double paper tray give me an excellent service I can put the normal letter paper in one and voucher checks in other with confidence. The HP Instant Ink program is simply a great great idea. If you are looking for an excellent printer I recommend it to you.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Disappointed with print quality and some features We purchased this printer just over a year ago for a small office context. The printer seamed to work as described except the document feeder would pull the pages through either crooked or more than one at a time. The only way to get a decent copy is to use the scanner glass which takes a ton of time when dealing with double sided or multiple page documents. After about 6 month of use the printer started printing with smudges and streaks. Images printed with streaks and faded colors and even text was blurry. Now the color is completely off. Images that are supposed to be blue are coming out a muddy peachish color. I have resorted to using a co workers printer for anything of professional importance or has any work of image or logo.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Much better than my 8600 After several years using my prior HP8600 printer I decided to upgrade to the 8740. So glad I did. Works much better, more quickly, and has improved print quality. So glad I upgraded to the new one. Surprisingly it was still priced very reasonably for the improved performance.
