FiiO X5 2nd Gen Overview

The black X5 (2nd Gen) from FiiO is a portable high-resolution audio player and USB DAC for audio enthusiasts. The unit features an audiophile-grade architecture and premium components capable of playing files up to 24-bit/192 kHz in a variety of formats including native DSD, WAV, WMA, ALAC, FLAC, APE, AIFF, and more.

The X5-II utilizes a Texas Instruments PCM1792A DAC coupled to an OPA1652 for great dynamic performance, while the FET inputs for I/V conversion offer extra-low distortion and noise. Additionally, two top-flight OPA1612 chips provide low pass filtering and voltage amplification for extra-low distortion and noise. The headphone output employs two BUF634U chips for current buffering, resulting in a sufficient drive current for a wide sound stage, high dynamics, and good bass power. Dual crystal oscillators ensure the lowest jitter and highest precision playback of music at any sample rate, eliminating conversion artifacts.

The player offers a standard 1/8" / 3.5mm headphone output and a separate line out/digital (coaxial) out via 1/8" / 3.5mm. The X5-II has no on-board memory, but uses two microSD card slots supporting up to 256GB total. The 3300mAh Li-polymer battery provides up to 10 hours of playback under normal conditions. The user interface offers five unique themes, while the classic scroll wheel and 2.4" HD IPS color display offers easy navigation. You can browse and play songs via folders, songs, albums, artists, genres, favorites, and playlists. The 10-band graphic EQ and the 120-step digital volume control allow for custom-tailored sound and levels.

The X5-II is 15% lighter and 12% smaller than the original X5. The chassis is made of aluminum alloy and features a high-reflectance, fine-grain faceplate. The X5-II ships with a 3' / 1m high-current micro-USB data/charging cable, an 1/8" / 3.5mm coaxial S/PDIF adapter, a clear case, three screen protectors (1 applied in-factory), an HDtracks coupon, and a set of three Bodywork stickers (USA flag, wood grain, and carbon fiber).

Will it support itunes?

No. It can't even communicate with iTunes. But it plays all Apple music files including ALAC. Just copy everything from your PC into the micro-SD memory will do. It can not recognize the iTunes playlists. But you can easily create them using free downloaded programs. Just follow the instructions from Fiio technical support.

I have the X5 Gen 1 and love the sound. Only thing I hate is that, in order to navigate to a certain artist or album, I must turn the wheel, sometimes for a long time. There is no way to jump to a specific letter in the alphabet. I have over 8,000 songs and when I want to scroll to an artist whose name starts with a letter in the middle of the alphabet, it takes forever. Does this Gen II allow for any quicker navigation?

I think I do as Bill does. I have a folder for each genre, and inside a folder for each artist. I can navigate faster through my X5 2nd gen songs then I can in my X5 3rd gen player.

Doe the X5 support OSX? I hear people talk about using itunes to transfer files, but My mac won't even recognize it, nor load the drivers, nor do I get a usb drive icon. The audio card in my mini recognizes it, and I can select it, and the screen on the X5 seems to show connected, but nothing comes through the headphones when I play a song from the mini. Is this thing PC only, and if so, why???

In DAC mode the X5 will serve as an external sound card for your MAC. No need to download or install drivers. The FiiO works with native MAC software. There is a setting on the X5 to switch between DAC mode and Player mode (DAP) it is called USB Mode in the System Settings and the choice is Storage or DAC .When in Storage mode the X5II connects to the MAC just like an external hard/USB Drive. Files may be copied by drag and drop like transferring any non music file to an external drive.There is a great program by Jeremy Laurenson called DAPPER which allows you to connect to iTunes and transfer playlist to the FiiO. Using this program I maintain both iPods and FiiO DAPs with the same playlist.I find this to be the best way to enjoy the FiiO DAPs.

Does this device allow for setting 'A' &amp; 'B' loop-points in the audio file for studying, etc? I would like to use this player for language-learning and music-study, as well as general listening.

no, you are better of using a cell phone with a 25$ Fiio usb DAC if sound quality is an issue.

I have been using 2x200GB cards with absolutely no issues. I went to the 200GB cards after the OTG capability was lost with the latest firmware. OTG always worked for me, but sadly it caused too many problems for others. On the bright side, no more OTG cord etc. Using the Sandisk 200GB cards.

I'm confused. One of the reviewers said this device can import my old itunes library without having to go through and re-organize my entire library but another said that it will not play iTunes-purchased files. I have an iPod Classic 180g that has been overfilled for some time. I want to upgrade from the iPod, but do not want to lose the 1000s of songs I purchased over the years from iTunes. Can someone tell me how to do that? Also, once you've switched this player, how do you purchase and add new songs to it?

It depends on when you purchased the files. At a certain point Apple stopped adding DRM to their files.So, I have some files that I purchased back in 2012. These won't show up in the X5's menu. ( even though they are on the micro SD card. )I have other itunes files purchased June of 2015. Those files can be read and played fine on the device. Hope that helps.
