Canon 600EX II-RT Overview

  • 1Description

Complete with built-in radio transmission wireless functionality, the Speedlite 600EX II-RT sits at the top of Canon's on-camera E-TTL / E-TTL II compatible flash lineup with a powerful guide number of 197' at ISO 100 and 200mm. This revision improves continuous flash performance by 1.1-1.5x, or up to 2.0x with optional battery pack, simplifies the menu system for faster operation, and includes a specially designed bounce adapter, a hard color filter, and an updated soft case. The two-way 2.4 GHz radio system provides added reliability and a range up to 98.4' among up to 5 groups with a total of 15 individual Speedlites. This system also does not need direct line-of-site like traditional optical-based transmission and will work through obstacles.

For added coverage and functionality, the flash's zoom head can reach from 20-200mm, with the option for wide 14mm coverage when the built-in diffusion panel is used. Also, the unit can tilt from -7 to +90° and rotate 180° either left or right for complete bounce capabilities. On the back of the 600EX II-RT is a backlit dot-matrix LCD panel that displays the status and allows users to easily access and change settings. Additionally, the flash is durable with a redesigned contact construction and improved dust and water resistant sealing.

Other capabilities of the 600EX II-RT include a stroboscopic mode as well as high-speed, first and second curtain sync settings for more control over your image's final look. The flash is powered by 4 AA batteries and has a port for an optional external power pack. The rated recycle time is 0.1-5.5 seconds, but can be sped up to 0.1-3.3 seconds in Quick Flash mode. It comes with a bounce adapter, a hard CTO filter set, a mini stand, and an updated soft case that holds the flash and accessories.

    Canon 600EX II-RT Reviews

    Speedlite 600EX II-RT is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 250.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Greatest flash ever used worth the cost I used a non Canon Flash for the last couple of years. I always had issues controlling the flash and the image was to dark or blown out. When the opportunity arose to purchase the 600 ex-rt at a real good price I figured why not what do I have to loose. I used it this past weekend for a wedding shoot. The match up was perfect to my 1dx. It synced without missing a step. The images came out perfect on the screen, they were even better on the computer. SPEND THE EXTRA MONEY ON THIS FLASH !!!! you won't be sorry.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Canon Speedlite 600EX-RT I recently purchased 5-Canon Speedlites 600EX-RT’s to replace all my 5- 580EXII’s and I sold all my pocket radios receivers. Just as a measure for those who are contemplating to purchase the 600EX-RT’s I still have my first Canon 10D though all the 5D’s- 60D-1DMk 2n-1DKk III & IV. All of them sync at HHS and work flawlessly in all modes “except” the Group feature, & I have a way around that, but will post my findings’ as I have not had the time to-do so at the moment. Hopefully Canon might release a firmware to the existing models to add the group feature in use.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Multi Flash Set-up overexpozure This is a reaction to the previous review below by njw1224 from Wheeling, WV. It seems that there is an over exposure problem when using multiple flash set-ups with the 600EX Rt/600EX. This can happen if there are three firing groups - A, B, and C. If a firing group C has been added and an over exposure results, avoid firing group C toward the main subject as this will likely cause the said overexposure. Alternatively, eliminate firing group C, and lump the extra slaves (from the now defunct firng group C) to firing group B or A. This works 99% of the time even if you point all flashes to the main subject. The phenomenon of over exposure in multi flash set-ups has been mentioned in pages 87 and 112 of the 600EX RT manual.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great improvement. I am One of the few individuals that I had a problem with the sticky control dial on the original Canon 600EX RT. So that being said I was a less impressed by that strobe. With the Canon 600EX-RT ii I can already say that I really doubt that I will have that issue. Dial is firm and feels stronger than previous versions. The new menu has changed but not so much that it's difficult to understand and pick up very quickly. The new carry case is nice although I don't use it very often. Other than that not much has changed and people like myself who value the speedlites for portable and lightweight strobes will still appreciate this new one.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Gorgeous products for limited time 4.5 stars This flash is nothing but amazing for sure. I have purchased several of these over the years since Canon first launched it. The power is great, the light it puts out is great for all my sessions both low light and just needing a little fill light. ONLY negative: It looses power quicker than I expected. Yes, I am high volume and use this flash for about 20 hours per week consistently; but in just over a year it has lost it's power and no longer puts out enough light. I bought a brand new 600ex-IIrt and took the exact same shot with just replacing the flash units and the one year old unit was definitely off by about 4 full stops. I understand wear and tear happens, but I kind of expect Canon products to last more than a year in use.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best canon speedlite to date I have most of the speedlites by Canon. I also have several other brands. This one was bought for my 5 D mk III, and qickly has become the favorite. The built quality is the best that I have seen, and the easy menu is a pleasure to work with. As far as performance goes, it is flawless and is also very good on batteris (even with some pretty heavy use). Fast recycling and consistant output is the best that I have had with self contained powered speedlite. Very, very happy with it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing Flash This flash is absolutely amazing. I owned a 580EX prior to purchasing this flash. It was an upgrade that was well worth it. The flash is very powerful and having the wireless capabilities built into the flash has changed the way I shoot. I consider myself an advanced amateur and flash photography has been a bit intimidating at times. I took some classes with Canon and I am no longer intimidated with flash. When I couple this flash with the remote transmitter, I have been able to get so much more creative with my shooting. The only real downside I have is that the flash is a bit expensive. However, when considering the fact that you don't need to buy remote triggers such as Pocket Wizards, the overall value of this flash makes sense. I just purchased a refurbished 600EX-RT through Canon's online store. I'm excited about the options I'll have with two flash units now.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Amazing Flash System I'm an advanced amateur photographer getting his start as a strobist. I do some freelance work with local companies in the Nashville area and my occasional clients/gigs as time permits. I have to give credit where due, as this 600ex-rt system is a top performer on my list. Although some will rave that speedlites don't stand up to studio flash, I'll say from experience the 600 is darn close. Anyone who uses speedlites know to increase output/light intensity and recycle speeds you simply bundle more lights. Well this guy makes that job easy. A simple multi-mount flash bracket like the triple threat and your trusty transmitter, st-e3-rt, and you're off to the races. Oh wait, don't forget there's NO CORDS! My favorite part is that I can literally pack for practically any event with one bag and shave weight from that bag in the process. Let me see you do that with studio strobes!

    question

    What gobo can I attach?
    Asked by: Avrumie K.
The Lastolite Strobo Gobo kit, B&H # LASG, would work for your needs. It comes with two gobos, but would also accept any B size 86mm metal gobo. The Lastolite Direct to Flashgun Bracket for Strobo Light Modification System, B&H # LALS2601, would be needed to connect the Gobo Kit to your flash.

    question

Will this work on the 5D Mark III or a 6 d
    Asked by: paul s.
This is the best flash I have ever used on my Canon 6D. I have the original 430EX and 580EX flash units, which can't be controlled by the 6D's menu screen. However, I can control the 600EX II-RT flash via the 6Ds screen if I want. This really is a great-performing flash all around. Glad I bought it!

    question

Can I use my 430EXii on my camera hot shoe to transmit to this off camera instead of using the transmitter I already have?I would like to use the 600 off camera triggered by the 430 as the 600 is more powerful.
    Asked by: Anonymous
No, you cannot. The Canon 430EX II Speedlite Flash has a built-in optical wireless receiver, so it may be used off-camera to receive an optical wireless signal to trigger the flash, but it does not have a built-in transmitter and cannot be used on-camera to wirelessly trigger another speedlite flash unit. The Canon 600EX II-RT Speedlite Flash has both a built-in optical/radio transmitter as well as a built-in optical/radio receiver. It may be used either on-camera to control other flashes or off-camera for use as a wireless slave flash unit. If you need an off-camera flash and you only have the two flashes listed above, then the 600EX II-RT will need to be placed on the camera as the optical wireless transmitter, and the 430EX II would need to be used off-camera as the optical wireless slave flash unit.
