Canon SX620 HS overview

  • 1Description

Characterized by its long-reaching zoom, the silver PowerShot SX620 HS from Canon is a sleek digital camera featuring a high-resolution 20.2MP CMOS sensor along with a powerful DIGIC 4+ image processor. The sensor and processor combine to form the Canon HS SYSTEM, which produces imagery with notable clarity and quality, as well as reduced noise when working at high sensitivities in low-light conditions. The sensor and processor also permit recording Full HD 1080p video at 30 fps, shooting stills at up to 7.1 fps, and working with sensitivities up to ISO 3200 to suit shooting in difficult lighting conditions. Complementing the imaging capabilities is a 25x optical zoom lens, which covers a wide-angle to super telephoto 25-625mm-equivalent focal length range, and Intelligent IS serves to balance this reach by minimizing the appearance of camera shake for sharper handheld shooting. The sleek form factor of the camera is accented by a large 3.0" 922k-dot LCD screen for composing imagery and reviewing your shots, and built-in Wi-Fi with NFC enables wireless sharing and remote camera control from a linked smartphone or tablet.

20.2MP CMOS Sensor and DIGIC 4+ Image Processor
The 20.2MP 1/2.3" CMOS sensor produces high-resolution imagery that, when paired with the DIGIC 4+ image processor, exhibits notable clarity and sensitivity to ISO 3200, as well as a top continuous shooting rate of 7.1 fps. The sensor and processor work together to create Canon's HS SYSTEM, which is able to produce clear, rich imagery in dimly-lit situations with minimal noise and vivid detail.

Beyond still image recording, the SX620 HS is also capable of recording Full HD 1080p video at 30 fps, which is easily accessible via a dedicated movie button.
25x Zoom Lens and Intelligent Image Stabilization
An expansive 25x optical zoom lens offers a wide-angle to super telephoto equivalent focal length range of 25-625mm to suit working with a wide variety of subjects. This extensive reach is complemented by a versatile Intelligent IS image stabilization system that minimizes the appearance of camera shake for both stills and video shooting:

  • Normal IS corrects for a wide range of common camera movements.
  • Panning IS detects deliberate panning movements and does not compensate for lateral movements to permit desired camera movements.
  • Macro (Hybrid) IS corrects for shift-type camera shake that commonly occurs when working with close-up subject matter.
  • Tripod is a dedicated setting that automatically deactivates IS when the use of a tripod is detected since camera-based stabilization is not needed.

  • Dynamic IS is well-suited to recording at wide-angle focal lengths and reduces unwanted shaking that typically occurs when walking while recording.
  • Powered IS compensates for hand movements that become more visually discernible when working at the telephoto end of the zoom range.
  • Macro (Hybrid) IS minimizes the appearance of shake when walking as well as compensates for shift-type shake that occurs when working with close-up subject matter.
  • Active Tripod IS minimizes the slight amount of shake that can happen when recording video while using a tripod.
Built-In Wi-Fi with NFC
Built-in Wi-Fi with NFC allows you to wirelessly share your photos and movies with a linked smartphone or tablet as well as remotely control the camera from the mobile device by using the Camera Connect app. A dedicated Wi-Fi button is also featured on the camera body to expedite the process of connecting with a smartphone or tablet and sharing imagery between devices.
Other Camera Features
  • A large 3.0" 922k-dot LCD monitor is available for composing imagery, navigating the menu, and reviewing photos and videos.
  • The Auto Zoom feature helps to maintain consistent compositions and framing accuracy, as well as sharp focus, when working with distant subjects by automatically zooming in or out.
  • Creative Shot modes help to transform your original imagery into creative and unique works using a system of 46 in-camera filters, which are grouped within Retro, Monochrome, Special, and Natural categories. Once the original image has been taken, the camera will automatically produce five additional variations using this series of filters.
  • Hybrid Auto will record short video clips prior to recording a still image, and then automatically compile them into one HD 720p video file to produce a highlight reel of a shooting session.
  • Smart AUTO intelligently selects the proper camera settings based on recognized shooting situations.

Canon SX620 HS reviews

PowerShot SX620 HS Digital Camera (Silver) is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 36.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wow! Great Power in a Small Package I am very impressed with this camera. It is small in size and weight which makes this camera perfect for my excursions. I go fossil and gem hunting frequently and the light weight matched with the great clarity of the photos meets and exceeds my expectations. I have some big a powerful professional cameras and equipment but I needed something that fits in between with out having to lose a quality photo on the go. It is perfect for travel and easily fits in a pocket.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I highly recommend this camera! I travel extensively and I always take two cameras. I have a DSLR which I use with a telephoto lens most of the time. And I want to always have a back-up camera. This Canon PowerShot SX620 fits the bill of what I want a backup camera to do. It has a good telephoto lens, it's lightweight, and it's easy to use. I carry it in my purse or pocket for those unexpected shots. I find the quality to be exceptional. Very happy I bought it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from great little camera I wanted a smaller, lighter alternative to my trusty Canon G10. Something I could have with me all the time in my pocket without the bulkier, heavier G10. I prefer the robust options of the SX620 versus my cell phone camera. I'm very pleased with the Canon SX620. It's light as a feather, performs to my needs and produces great results. I'd buy it again.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Camera, Great Value! Ideal for Traveling Purchased to replace a 7 yr old Nikon Coolpix, this is a feature rich, small handprint camera that gets the job done. I researched all of the popular point and shoot digital cameras and while you can get cheaper ones, the SX620 combines higher end features in an easy to use form factor. It's a serious camera that lets the photographer do as much or as little as they want to. It's ideal for someone traveling who wants to take great shots, but not have to overthink it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good Things Can Come in Small Packages Overall, a great little camera. Amazing zoom for its size, decent auto focus and sharp results. Got it to replace my SX500 which went missing, and the photos are so much sharper with the SX620. I take a lot of sailing pictures, so there's a lot of motion, both with my platform and the subjects, and this camera handles that very well. As I'm also running the races at the same time, I can't concentrate on the photography as much as I'd like, but the shots still come out well!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from It's ok I guess... I bought this to replace my aging Panasonic Lumix. All in all, I still like the Lumix better because it has more intuitive controls. The Canon is nice and compact, takes good pictures. But the printed owner's manual is pretty useless, and the on-line electronic manual is not available to me when I really want it. I guess all cameras in this class are using a menu-driven system now, but I really prefer a rotating selector knob on top for accessing various shooting modes. Far more intuitive.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Buy this camera; it is a honey for low $$. This Canon Power Shot point and shoot camera was a birthday gift for my wife. We moved from the mountains to the valley of Northern California, and the movers lost several boxes of our belongings - one of which included her camera. The Canon was a replacement for her old 7 mp camera which she loved. But the canon is 24.1 mp and the resolution of the photos is far superior to anything I have seen in this type of camera. It is so easy to set up and for her to use. It takes fabulous pictures. Getting the color and exposure right is truly an effortless task. I looked at many, many different cameras and many, many reviews on this one. This camera is the best one for its modest price. I took the advice of one reviewer who said to put the camera in program mode instead of automatic when taking photos other than those with people in them. He said that the camera is set to look for faces in auto mode even if you are taking landscapes. That bit of advice is correct, and setting it in program mode is like another automatic setting. Everything is done for you - light meter, flash setting, color correction, etc. It is especially good at indoor photography, which is usually the most difficult. I used it outdoors and was not disappointed either. This camera rivals my 24 mp DSLR with multiple lenses which I paid $$$$ for. And it is feather light compared to mine. We are planning a trip to nearby Table Mountain which is known for its waterfalls and wildflowers in spring, especially in a wet year like this one. I think I know who will get the best photos again, and it ain't me, even though I have been a professional photographer for over 40 years.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Really easy to use to get good photos. A true, easy-to-use point and shoot that has advanced features you can ignore, or you can learn a few for even better shots. The easy-to-use 25X optical zoom gets nice and close to subjects and scenes without having to use the available digital zoom. Because of the nice high resolution available (which I believe is the default setting, L), you can even get closer after shooting, by later zooming in on your distant focus area or subject in the complete photo or cropping the photo so when copied full size your distant subject is bigger and closer. The original high resolution allows that after-the-shot enlargement without noticeably losing picture quality. I could bring distant animals into focus that way, even one I did not know was in my original photo. The only downside I found was that in the simplest-to-use auto-focus mode the camera looks for human faces and focuses on anything it thinks is a face, even if no faces are in the scene. That led to some strange shots when I started using the camera. I found early on that landscapes and other scenes without human-like faces are best shot in the Program (P) mode, with 3 easy-to-change options for distance of focus. Then my non-people shots came out much better. After one week-long outdoor trip with this camera on sea and land, I really love it.
