Focusrite 18i8 overview

  • 1Description

Focusrite's second-generation Scarlett 18i8 is a table-top audio interface designed specifically for use in a computer environment. The device sports a total of eighteen inputs and eight outputs and communicates with computers via USB 2.0. It's designed to operate handily at resolutions and sample rates of up to 24-bit/192 kHz, while its combination front-panel inputs render it suitable for tracking instruments with much in the way of headroom and little in the way of distortion.

In addition to its two balanced monitor outputs, the 18i8 offers two volume-controllable headphone outputs on the front. The unit is also expandable, able to handle eight more inputs by means of an on-board ADAT port, while securing additional digital connections with MIDI and S/PDF I/Os. The 18i8 provides a round-trip latency as low as 2.74 ms at 96 kHz, allowing you to record and monitor processed sound sources in real time.

Multiple I/Os, Front and Back
Four Scarlett combination inputs—two of them redesigned to improve upon the first-generation's headroom—allow you to plug in 1/4" instruments or XLR sound sources via the front panel. They also support 48V phantom power. On the rear, four 1/4" jacks handle line inputs, while two balanced monitor outputs provide your main speaker connections. This device also sports MIDI I/Os, as well as an ADAT expansion port to hook in eight more channels of inputs.
Intuitive Mix Control and Additional Software
Focusrite Control—an included internal mixer—is designed to facilitate and power an intuitive array of routing setups. It also provides access to internal hardware functions. Furthermore, the 18i8 includes software such as an exclusive Focusrite edition of Pro Tools | First Pack, Ableton Live Lite, the Softube Time and Tone Bundle, Foscusrite's Red Plug-In Suite, and 2GB of Loopmasters samples.
Downloadable iOS Remote Control App
Downloadable Focusrite iOS Control app adjusts cue mixes remotely from iOS devices (iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch)
New Metal Parts
Metal gain controls and a red metal chassis round out its rugged, industrial design.

    Focusrite 18i8 reviews

Scarlett 18i8 USB 2.0 Audio Interface (2nd Generation) is rated 3.7 out of 5 by 6.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good quality, good value - recommended A good interface - good quality. I have one keyboard and several mics connected to the 18i8. Although the output volume seems a bit softer than my previous interface, the sound is cleaner and easy to control using the Focusrite Control software. Installation was easy on my PC. There are many plug-ins available, some free, some paid. I do not use them because I already have many such plug-ins with my DAW - but it is an option, especially if you choose to use this interface in a live performance. Overall, I would highly recommend the Focusrite Scarlett 18i8.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from An absolute lemon. I buy various stuff online from B&H, so I wanted to reach as wide an audience as possible so no poor unsuspecting person buys one of these soon to be paperweights - if my own experience is anything to go by. (After purchasing recently in Australia, I have spent over six hours investigating possible reasons for the faults below. Thankfully the store in Melbourne took the machine back the next day. The faults at the time .. Unit switches itself off/ disconnects intermittently without warning, despite my following all advice Optimizing you mac for audio on Focusrtie web site. This usually happens at between around 5 and 10 minutes. Sometimes the unit will remain on for up to 20 minutes. Occasionally after switching itself off, the unit will switch itself on again after about 5 minutes. Unit sometimes switches off Outputs 1 and 2 without notice but when still connected, with Logic Pro open. Sometimes the unit after being powered on emits an annoying high pitched buzz at about -45dB at about 11.5k. Great for monitoring at 85dB ... not. Same problems using Quicktime selecting In and OUT via System Preferences (QT Pro 7), and application drop down menu (QT 10). Tried three USB cables of various lengths of up to around 3 metres, including provided red cable. Tried both USB ports on MacBook Pro with no other USB items connected. Tested analogue signal path from Scarlet Outputs 1 & 2 to balanced in of desk, then to monitoring to ensure that the 11.5k buzz was coming from Scarlet. Adjusted buffer in Logic to a very forgiving, conservative 256 samples. Tried using Logic and Quicktime with Focusrite Control 2.1.7 running simultaneously, and also not running alongside the other apps. Doesn't seem to make any difference except the GUI is substituted with a disconnected notice. I'm running OSX 10.11.6. Oh, and you won't be able to use a USB control keyboard if this thing is running. Focusrite advise against using any other USB devices. (And you're also advised to turn your Firewall off if you can work that one out.)

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not able to make it work consistently I just tried to make it work as an audio interface with my computer just to get rolling. I loaded all the drivers as instructed, connected the hardware and applied power. Fired up a Youtube video and the video would not play. The youTube video would freeze and it would tell me to restart my device. After turning the power to the Scarlett on and off 4 times it finally worked. A day later I rebooted my system and the same problem occured. Fought this problem for 3 weeks. Decided to really dig in and finally make a decision to keep the Scatlett or send it back. I tried different USB cables, different USB ports, and reloaded drivers. No go. Control panel in Sound section said Scarlet was selected and was working properly. Scarlett was set as default device on record and playback. In Control Panel, Device Manager indicated Scarlett was recognized and all entries, as specified by Focusrite, were correct. Things like USB ports etc. When I tried to run the Scarlett control it told me there was no hardware connected even though the front panel of the Scarlett indicated there was an active USB connection. I searched Scarletts support page for a solution. I tried everything they suggested but was not successful. Searched Google for a possible remidy. Discovered that many other folks are having the same problems as I am having but nobody had a solution. I was replacing an M-Audio Fastrack Ultra that finally went belly up after 8 years. Never had any problems with it till it died. I will be sending this Scarlett back tomorrow and I will start researching other Audio Interface, including M-Audio. One nice thing is that B&H is making it really easy to return the Scarlett. I have purchased equipment from B&H for many years and they have always been fantastic in every way.
