    Synology DS916+ reviews

DiskStation DS916+ 4-Bay NAS Enclosure is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 36.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Silent Data Loss Our site employs multiple NAS units by Synology and QNAP. I find the hardware equally reliable, but Synology issued a 6.0 system software update that silently removed the automated backup system for the NAS. Applying an update that secretly removes a vital component of data security is unacceptable! Additionally, you can't get anywhere with online tech support without agreeing to their privacy policy. I actually did read it, and the third party information sharing would make Google jealous. Phone and online tech support was unhelpful, and we will start replacing Synology units with QNAP, as we cannot trust our data to Synology system software.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Outstanding NAS I use this NAS to backup via TimeMachine (Apple) to the NAS. I love the many features that the Synology 916+ has. When I take a picture from my iPhone, I have the nas setup so that the picture automatically goes into my Photos folder on the NAS. I have wanted to install a NAS in my home for years, but has always put it off. Instead, I saved hard drives as I upgraded PC's during the years. Finally decided it was time and I'm in my mid-70's. Can't much longer or my window will close! Having no real network experience, used the Synology help videos and used YouTube to install my NAS. I took it as a learning experience and found that it was easy to install....TRY IT

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A superior NAS - but not for the tech novice! I think Synology builds the best NAS products; they tend to cost a bit more - but worth it if you value the integrity of your data storage. Their tech support is reasonably fast and completely professional - important with a sophisticated thing like the Diskstation. Even though I have a great deal of technical computer experience, I did have to contact them for some clarification of how to go about setting it up. The documentation available online is good, but not complete. Once I got it configured, the DS916+ has been a pleasure to use. I use it to provide first level backup for the machines on my network, and for some file serving. I'm running RAID6 with 4x4Tb HGST drives = 8Tb of storage. Also got the drives from B&H.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Powerful inside, cheap outside I upgraded to this from a Synology 411+ since it started to lock up randomly after being on 24/7 for almost 7 years. The DSM OS is very user friendly but very much the reason I decided to go with Synology again. The unit has been able to handle everything so far with very low CPU usage. It is a suitable datastore for several VMware ESXi VMs I have in the lab as well as doing handling crashplan backups. However, when you compare the enclosure between the DS411+ and the DS916+, there is an obvious difference in quality. The newer DS916+ is mostly plastic (even the rails) and my largest complaint is that there is a very loud vibration/buzzing from the plastic enclosure. You'll find plenty of videos on YouTube detailing this loud vibration and how to workaround it. I find it unacceptable to have to stick velco on the rails to address a design issue with the Synology. However, if I want to protect an investment of four 8TB hard drives, I will be forced to do that since long term vibration will cause disk errors down the road.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very happy! I have a small-ish design studio. I do architectural design, movies and photography. So, I have some large files using both PC's and Mac's. I have been storing everything on externals and it felt very sloppy and unreliable. So, I invested in the DS 916+ 4-bay NAS enclosure and purchased 4 - 4tb NAS drives. It took a couple of days to set up and transfer all my data over, but VERY much worth it. The NAS cross platforms beautifully and performs perfectly. I have had this system up and running about 2 weeks now. Not one complaint. Look forward to expanding. Recommend you also purchase a UPS for another layer of security with regard to protection from power outages.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent NAS, Simple Install, & Moderately Complex Setup 4x Seagate 4TB Constellation Es.3 Enterprise 7200rpm/128MB cache Install was fine. Although I did have to update the drives firmware using a PC. As there is no way that I know to update the firmware once they are installed in the NAS. Downloaded OS setup took about 30 minutes. Drives then proceeded to check parity for the rest of the day and finished during the night. Security checker is nice, which determines what action the admin should take to secure the device. Make sure you actually bond the ethernet ports if that's what you want to do. This was not obvious to me. I would have left them as default fail-over had I not watched a setup video on youtube. Once they are bonded it should have only 1 IP address. I still feel like the device could be more secure even though it has two factor authentication. Hibernation works great, and the device is intelligent to wake up when needed. This saves power and HD life. Fan speed needs to be set to one of three levels. I wish it had automatic speed control and would increase and decrease as necessary. Notification are great, with many options. Overall I would recommend this product to anyone who has some technical knowledge or good amount of patience for setup. It is a wonderful device once it is fully configured and up and running.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from So close to perfection, what I think after 7 days This NAS is great! performance fantastic, the user interface is all that a demanding geek could want and hope for. The configuration was easy if you wanted it to be by choosing the personal setup, I picked business to expand on the configuration options. Some of the settings required thought and research none were over the top. Running the security checker was great and brought up a few items that improve security that I think shows the level of detail the team at Synology has. Running a local headless cloud backup service on the NAS, glad I went with 8GB of ram. I think you could get away with 4GB but the cost is not to much more. Now the downside: With this unit had one more open drive bay, having an odd number of bays lets you install drives in pairs ( order same HDD 2 EA at a time from 2 vendors in an attempt to split manufacture production runs and build lot, just in case of a hidden defect) and would leave the odd bay for expansion or recovery of a failed/failing HDD, we only have 4 openings. Second, is that the total HDD size can only be 40TB, another NAS company with only a 32bit system is 64TB. Today 40TB seems large, who can guess in a few years what it will feel like. You can add a five bay expansion unit at nearly the same price as the head unit. I would buy this unit again? most definitely! Buy it from BH, ALWAYS.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Amazing except for one problem... First time NAS user, and except for one problem, this is a great system. PRO: The software is amazing...all encompassing for a hybrid personal / professional setup like I have, very easy to learn and use. Everything on that front, from unboxing, installation, setup, and use was a breeze. Love everything about that aspect. Aesthetics are nice (currently in a visible location, but that will likely change soon). CON: There is a horrific buzzing and vibration coming from the unit that I can only attribute to the NAS itself. I've removed single drives one by one to see if there was a problem with the HDs, but it still persisted intermittently. I think it is due to vibration of HDs within the enclosure itself. If it wasn't for this problem, this would easily be a 5+ review due to ease of use and fantastic software. As it is, it may be a deal breaker pending resolution...I'm trying to find home remedies to fix the vibration (concern about long term drive damage). Will try to remember to keep this updated regarding vibration.
