Sonnet DX800 overview

  • 1Description

Compatible with Windows, Mac, and Linux, the Fusion DX800RAID 64TB 8-Bay Mini-SAS RAID Array (8 x 8TB) from Sonnet combines their Fusion DX800RAID storage system with a 6 Gb/s SAS/SATA RAID Controller Card. The RAID controller is installed into an available PCIe x4 or x8 slot of your host system and connects to the array using the integrated mini-SAS ports located on the Fusion DX800RAID and the RAID controller card. The Fusion DX800RAID has a capacity of 64TB that is split between eight 8TB 3.5" 7200 rpm hard drives, with each drive bay being able to support 3.5" SATA II 3 Gb/s and SATA 1.5 Gb/s drives.

The Fusion DX800RAID is designed for those who need fast and reliable storage for work environments where high performance and fault tolerance are critical. It is able to support single-stream 2K (2048 x 1556) LOG RGB capture and playback, single-stream uncompressed 10-bit 1080 4:4:4 HD, or multiple streams of ProRes 422 and uncompressed 8-bit 1080 HD, DV, HDV, and DVCPRO video, while achieving read speeds up to 1,300 MB/s, write speeds up to 1,385 MB/s when configured as a RAID 5.

This array supports hardware RAID configurations 0, 1, 4, 5, 6, and 10, each of which offers performance, data redundancy, or a combination of both. For those who do not require the performance of a RAID, JBOD is also available. The system can be configured to provide audible and visual alerts in the event of drive failure and if this occurs, once a new drive is swapped in, the RAID group may be rebuilt in hours, or rebuild priority can be set to deliver full read performance so users may keep working while the RAID rebuilds in the background.

In addition to the data security provided by select RAID configurations, Sonnet's RAID controller uses ATTO Technologies' "DriveAssure Technology," which helps monitor I/O performance by periodically scanning drives to map out and repair bad sectors and slow spots. This maintenance allows the controller to compensate for instance when a RAID group does not respond to a command within a specified time, which could lead to dropped frames or a total RAID failure. For those looking to expand the capacity of their Fusion DX800RAID, its internal SAS expander allows up to sixteen DX800RAID expansion enclosures to be connected in a daisy chain without the need for additional RAID controller cards.

The reliability of the Fusion DX800RAID is further enhanced through SES (SCSI Enclosure Services) 2.0 compliance, a feature more commonly found on enterprise storage systems, and enhanced S.M.A.R.T (Self-Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology) data reporting for each hard drive installed in the system. Built into the Fusion DX800RAID enclosure, SES functionality provides enhanced real-time monitoring and reporting of drive, power supply, and temperature status, with real time results displayed in utility application screens via LED illumination. S.M.A.R.T. data criteria can be used to notify users of an impending drive failure and enable them to minimize downtime as a result.

The Fusion DX800RAID 64TB 8-Bay Mini-SAS RAID Array with Controller (8 x 8TB) operates using a 300W power supply at 100-240V and 50/60 Hz. Included is a Sonnet 6 Gb/s SAS/SATA RAID controller card, eight 3.5" drive modules, a power cord, and two 6.6" mini-SAS cables. Protection is provided by a limited 5-year warranty.

General Features

What happens if a drive does fail? In most instances, a protected RAID group rebuilds using data on the remaining drives. Protected RAID groups using high capacity drives face a greater risk of a second or third drive failure during a RAID group rebuild. When this occurs, most storage systems fail the RAID group and take it offline, making the data inaccessible. DriveAssure can help recover data when other methods have failed. Its data recovery modes enable access to data in offline RAID groups so you can copy it to a new RAID group or continue working with it in the case of a soft drive failure. This ability can potentially mean the difference between the loss of a single file versus all of your assets
RAID Flexibility
Fusion DX800RAID systems support RAID 4 (DVRAID), 5, 6, and 10 for balanced performance and protection, RAID 1 for 1:1 redundancy, and RAID 0 for speed. For those who do not require a RAID, JBOD support is also available. Fusion DX800RAID systems even support hot spares - users can set up a RAID group so that one or more designated hot spare drives wait unused in the background to automatically replace a failed drive. All of this is accomplished using a configuration utility that enables users to optimize their setup for specific workflow requirements
RAID Controller
The heart of a Fusion DX800RAID storage system is the Sonnet 6 Gb/s SAS/SATA RAID controller. Offering eight lanes of PCIe 2.0 connectivity, this adapter is based on a Marvell 88RC9580 RAID-on-Chip (ROC) processor, which handles the throughput from all the drives with plenty of overhead. The Sonnet 6 Gb/s SAS/SATA RAID controller is configured with 512MB of ECC-protected cache memory, especially important to maintain data stream writes as the disk array nears capacity
Thunderbolt 2 Edition Available
Today's notebooks, mini, and all-in-one desktop computers now have improved processing power, but they lack the ability to connect an equally powerful pro video editing storage solution, much less the capability to install a high performance RAID controller card. Sonnet offers a solution that addresses both shortcomings - the Fusion DX800RAID Thunderbolt 2 Edition. This package marries a Fusion DX800RAID system, the Sonnet 6 Gb/s SAS/SATA RAID Controller, and Sonnet's Echo Express SEL Thunderbolt 2 Expansion Chassis for PCIe cards to deliver HD optimized performance and proven data safety to users of iMac, Mac mini, MacBook Air, and MacBook Pro computers with Thunderbolt ports
Versatile Performance
These systems are ideal for use in mixed environments. Various operating systems, editing applications, and output demands require the flexibility and interoperability of Fusion DX800RAID storage systems. Fusion DX800RAID systems support OS X, Windows 8, 7, Vista, and XP, Windows Server 2008 & 2003, and Linux. They are compatible with capture cards from AJA, Blackmagic Design, Matrox, and Bluefish444, and work with mainstream video editing applications including Apple Final Cut Pro X and Adobe Premiere Pro
Fusion DX800RAID storage systems integrate a quiet Vantec Stealth fan. This fan is quieter than a standard case fan, making this system well suited for use in noise-sensitive environments
Secure Connection
Fusion DX800RAID enclosures link to the Sonnet RAID controller with mini-SAS to mini-SAS connector cables that lock securely at both ends
