Zoom H4n Pro Overview

  • 1Description

Ideal for guitarists, bassists, and vocalists looking to produce studio-quality tracks on a single travel-friendly device, the Zoom H4n Portable Handheld Recorder with Onboard Stereo Microphone Capsule and versatile mic/line/instrument inputs lets you record up to four tracks of high-resolution audio in the palm of your hand. Plug in your favorite guitar and microphone, and enjoy unlimited overdubbing, amp simulation, and a slew of effects to develop your tracks into a polished mix.

Like other H-Series Handy recorders such as the H5 and H6, you can hold it in your hand, attach it to a mic stand or tripod, or mount it to a camera (shoe mount available separately). The H4n Pro packs a surprising array of features into a rugged, rubberized body that's more than ready to meet the varied demands of songwriters, musicians, filmmakers, sound designers, content creators, and more.

From plentiful battery life to powerful audio processing functions, the H4n Pro is well equipped to handle anything from tracking live performances, demos, and complete songs to recording sound effects, interviews, and meetings. It can supply phantom or plug-in power for condenser mics or accepts direct connections from instruments such as a guitar, bass, or keyboard. No matter the source, selectable auto-recording and pre-recording ensure that you'll never miss the start of a take.

Onboard Adjustable Stereo Microphone
Leave your external mics at home and travel light. The H4n Pro is outfitted with an onboard stereo microphone that provides clear, phase-accurate capture in two different X/Y positions—90° for a tight stereo image or 120° for a wider perspective. Just twist the capsules to their premarked positions to switch between the two configurations. With nothing more than the H4n Pro, you're set to record speech, practice sessions, concerts, or ambient and environmental sounds, even ear-rattling thunder up to 140 dB.
2-Channel Microphone/Line/Instrument Inputs
Equipped with two locking XLR-1/4" combo inputs and a 3.5mm stereo mini-jack input, the H4n Pro can accommodate condenser microphones, line-level sources, or unbalanced instrument-level signals. Turn on 24 or 48 VDC phantom power to the XLR jacks, or 2.5V plug-in power to the mini jack. Whether you plan on plugging in a guitar and your favorite studio condenser mic to record a singer-songwriter or feel like hooking up a lavalier mic for an interview, the H4n Pro's preamps (identical to those found in the H5 and H6) are ready to deliver low-noise (-120 dBu EIN) performance.

If you happen to setup external microphones in a mid-side configuration, the integrated MS decoder allows adjustment to the perceived width of the stereo image, which is beneficial for sound design, broadcasting, or general stereo-to-mono compatibility.
Record up to 4 Channels Live or Overdub Layers
The H4n Pro boasts multiple recording modes, and is capable of up to 24-bit / 96 kHz resolution. Record in stereo from the onboard mic or input jacks, or use 4CH Mode to simultaneously record the onboard mic (or 3.5mm mic input) and two external sources via the XLR-1/4" jacks (great for getting the room sound and a stereo feed from a mixer). Alternatively, switch to MTR mode to utilize the H4n Pro as a 4-track studio complete with overdubbing, punch recording, and built-in effects. The H4n Pro's internal mixdown function lets you adjust levels and pans as you blend four tracks down to stereo.
SD-Card Recording and Audio Interface Functionality
Maximize portability by recording directly to an SD card (up to 2GB capacity) or SDHC card (up to 32GB capacity). A 4GB SDHC card yields approximately 380 minutes of 16-bit / 44.1 kHz stereo recording time using the BWF-compliant WAV format for uncompressed audio quality and industry-standard file compatibility. Note that media cards are available separately, and larger capacity cards may increase startup times.

Alternatively, use the H4n Pro as a 2-in/2-out USB 2.0 audio interface at up to 48 kHz. At 44.1 kHz, you'll have the option to use the built-in effects on input signals. The USB port also enables fast file transfer and firmware updates.
3.5mm Output to Connect to a Camera or Headphones
The 3.5mm line/headphone mini-jack output features a dedicated volume control, making it capable of feeding your camera/DSLR or a pair of headphones. For quick playback reference, a built-in monophonic speaker is provided.
Powered via AA Batteries or AC Adapter
Power the H4n Pro with the two included AA batteries, or plug it into a wall outlet with an AD-14 AC adapter (available separately). Alkaline batteries can keep the H4n Pro running for up to 10 hours in Stamina mode (built-in mics, 16-bit / 44.1 kHz, no headphones), while NiMH batteries extend recording time a bit further.
Rugged and Portable, Handheld or Mounted
The rubberized, ergonomic body lends itself naturally to handheld use. Should you need to mount it on a mic stand or tripod, a threaded hole on the back of the H4n Pro obviates the need for stand adapters. Obtain a hot shoe adapter (available separately) to attach the H4n Pro directly to a DSLR.
Extensive Audio Processing
The H4n Pro offers studio-grade effects and emulators to enhance your recordings. Choose from a variety of effects such as compression, limiting, reverb, delay, echo, modulation, a low-cut filter, and more. Normalize files for maximum gain, split them into smaller chunks, and insert up to 99 marks per recording.

There's an onboard metronome and tuner, along with dozens of amp models and effects crafted for guitar and bass. Additionally, you can loop playback and adjust pitch and speed independently, making the H4n Pro an ideal tool for phrase training.
Special Recording Functions
Stereo and 4CH modes offers selectable recording functions designed to prevent you from accidentally missing the start of a performance. By keeping the previous two seconds (one second at 96 kHz sample rate) of audio whenever you press the record button, the prerecord option ensures that you'll never cut off the beginning of a great take. Auto-record can automatically start recording when a user-set sound level is detected, making it great for voice-activated recording.
Supports External Remote Control
Use the RC4 remote (available separately) to control the H4n Pro. It allows you to start and stop recording, fast forward and rewind through your files, switch the input source, and set recording/playback levels at a distance while eliminating handling noise.
Highly Visible Display
Day or night, view vital information such as audio levels, recording time, battery status, and more on the 1.9" monochrome backlit LCD. Transport controls, menu navigation buttons, track and input select buttons are presented nearby for access to all the H4n Pro's operations and functions.
Includes Audio Software
The H4n Pro comes with free download licenses for Steinberg's Cubase LE music production software and WaveLab LE audio editing software, representing a complete audio production toolkit.

    Zoom H4n Pro Reviews

H4n Pro 4-Input / 4-Track Portable Handy Recorder with Onboard X/Y Mic Capsule is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 69.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Par for the Course I was excited to try this out when Zoom said they put in new pre-amps to create a cleaner signal, and was disappointed to find out it is more along the lines of a more sensitive recorder, rather than a cleaner one necessarily. The ratio of noise to volume of the same source at the same distance is slightly better, but not as great as I was hoping for. Other than that, it is still very dependable with some smaller details such as the locking XLR parts. Its still a new unit and I plan to analyze it further, but for now these are on the surface observations. Overall, still a solid recorder.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A great tool I am a video producer. I get excellent sound with a R0DE NTG3 shotgun mic mounted on my Sony EX-1 camera. But I had to film a July 4 festival and knew it would be difficult to capture the video interview clips AND the sound of a fantastic Silicon Valley symphony. So I bough the H4n. I spent several hours testing and uploading files to computer and left for a week of various video projects. I used the recorder and found it to work well. Whenever I did not know exactly how to set the controls, it was smart enough to act correctly. For instance, when I plugged in the XLR for board sound, It was internally able to detect mic level or line level and I didn't have to go looking through menus. Second, there is a 2 GB maximum on file size, and when it reached 2GB, it just created a new file, and kept doing it's thing. I recorded levels on the low side so not to overload. I never use Automatic Gain control on anything. The sound is so quiet, I can boost the levels to normal in post with no noise. It works! But allow some time to go through the manual so you can relax with it.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Takes 10 minutes to turn on. Takes 20 minutes to format card How can you sell a "PRO" product that is THIS SLOW. I have an older version of the ZoomH4N that is so slow, I had to go out and rent this newer version for my last shoot, hoping it would actually turn on when you press the ON button this time around. Nope. On top of that, to format a memory card, you might as well go run 6 miles then come back and maybe it will be done. $200+ for something that still can't figure out how to boot up. I don't get it. I just don't get it. And please...the menu on this thing couldn't be more complicated if it was designed by a dyslexic dog with broken chopsticks. If you buy a car that won't start when you need it, do you even have a car?

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Like reuniting with an old friend. So after years of abuse, I retired my old H4n and tried the Tascam DR60D mkii. Like Joni said, you don't know what you got til it's gone. After a week with the overrated Tascam, I saw the H4n Pro had come out. Promptly sold the Tascam and ordered this. Maybe it's just what I'm used to, but I so much prefer the portable handlheld form factor, where I can hold this thing in my hand (or on a lightstand) and work the rocker levels. And with 0 to 100, you actually get way more variance for fine tuning over the deceptively limited digital stepping of the Tascam. Much improved LCD screen and rubber housing. Locking XLR inputs. Also fits perfect and snugly in a cheap smartphone case that I punched where I cut a hole in the bottom (see photo). Plug in my XLR handheld, hook it to my belt and can walk around an event all day. Works perfect. I'll never step out on my H4n again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from phenominal product Am a first time user of an audio recorder of any kind. Found the zoom extremely user friendly to use- delivering amazing quality of sound through just it's in built mics. Can't wait to seen what the machine is capable of doing when connected to good quality microphones.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A Winning Solution First you should realize the AC adapter is not included unless you buy the kit with the wind screen, card, and adapter, a better deal than just purchasing the AC adapter by itself, because the windscreen is also a necessary kit accessory in my view. Still a very good buy even adding that. You can adjust the mic sensitivity for a decent closed-mic type response if you are using the attached/internal mics. You can attach recorder via USB directly to your audio editor on your computer and record into the software via the recorder, the set-up is relatively intuitive. You also have the option of multiple channel audio capture. The pro model is the way to go, slightly better audio quality than the standard H4N Zoom for not much more cost. Two small issues are that if you are going with internal mic recording, you must truly aim the sort of aggressive-looking external cylindrical mics to the audio source for best results, and that means you need to have some sort of stand for it if you are doing, say, a lengthy oral history. It will not stand up on end with the AC adapter attached. And the other issue for me is that you cannot make a mono track exactly if using an XLR mic, you can, but it will have the second track empty or just doubled. Or at least I have not found a way to create a single track. That doubles your file size needlessly until you get it into an audio editor. Otherwise I would give this workhorse 5 stars. Seems durable enough, the menu process is very tactile using the little wheel for selection of function. Lots of features musicians will love that I do not need (or understand), my use is only voice for oral histories. Only these little small issues, overall this is the recorder to get.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Needs Improvement In summary, this recorder feels like a device from 10 years ago. Cons: 1) Boots up incredibly slow 2) Cannot recognize SD cards above 32GB 3) Auto rec lvl control is garbage Explanation: 1) It takes my device about 3-5 min to boot up. I think it has a hard time reading and booting up with the SD card in it, even though the card is 100% compatible. 2) Today, its not uncommon to own 64GB+ cards. However, this recorder won't recognize anything above 32GB. This actually forced me to purchase another card. 3) If you are recording something that has a high dynamic range in audio, then the auto input lvl control will most likely fail you. It usually starts out very loud and works its way down. Unfortunately, until the restart the recording, the audio lvl will be stuck at low if a higher input triggered it to do so. This actually forced me to redo an entire interview scene. I would suggest only using manual input lvl. Do a sound check and just make sure it doesn't clip. Overall, at this price, I would expect a more modern recorder.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Useful tool with a couple little caveats.... This is a solid recorder for use with DSLRs for video. It's easy to use and gives you what you need for basic audio. One warning **** DON'T USE FAST SD CARDS!!!! The Zoom can NOT handle cards with write speeds above 60mbps, it seems, so use your older, cheaper cards. No big deal, I guess, but kind of a weird quirk. The ZOOM will give you a card read error and not work at all if it doesn't like the card. Another thing that is annoying is that there is no way to solo individual channels when monitoring, so if you are in 4 channel mode, it's hard to monitor each source individually. Generally when I use it, I only use the stereo mode for the two XLR inputs (either a shotgun and a lav, or two lavs). I've never had much use for the built in ZOOM mics, but I guess they'd be nice if you have a podcast or something and you own no other mics. You definitely need a windscreen for the ZOOM built in mics if you're going to use them outside, any wind whatsoever is excruciating to listen to on these mics without a windscreen.

    question

Is there a way to record though the built in mic on one track. And the input mic on a separate track?
    Asked by: Moshe H.
Yes. The stereo microphones on top, along with the external microphone input (on either 1 or both inputs) can all record on different tracks. It is a 4 track audio recorder.
