iFootage S1 overview

  • 1Description

The Carbon Fiber Shark Slider S1 Bundle from iFootage includes the Shark Slider S1 -- with the flywheel -- and adds extension rails and a longer drive belt. The standard S1 is 31" long end-to-end and features a 25" sliding length, and with the additional rails the sliding length is increased to 47". The S1 comes with a padded carrying bag which can fit the additional accessories of this bundle as well.

The Shark Slider S1 is a modular slider supporting up to 15 lb loads (11 lb with extension rails) and offering smooth movement thanks to silent bearings, synchronous belts, and a flywheel that adds inertia. The flywheel adds a damping effect to your slides, ensuring smooth acceleration/deceleration as opposed to jerky starts and stops. It achieves this through its centrifugal force while the slider belt is connected to it.

The S1 can be completely taken apart with just one included hex wrench and the different components packed separately, if you want. The end pieces offer adjustable feet that spread out in triangular form to add extra stability. The mounting plate attached on the bottom of the sliding carriage is also designed with stability in mind and is screwed into the carriage at four corners to minimize vibration when the slider is mounted on a tripod. The S1 offer has a 3/8"-16 camera mounting screw, and 1/4"-20 and 3/8"-16 tripod mount threaded holes.

The carbon fiber rails provide for better corrosion resistance than aluminum and also allow for a lighter system. The S1 supports longer rails from iFootage for a total sliding length of 70". It also supports the S1A1 and S1A3 Wireless Motion Controllers, and the Motion X2 System, which provides 360° camera movement.

    iFootage S1 reviews

Carbon Fiber Shark Slider S1 Bundle is rated 4.1 out of 5 by 8.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Silky Smooth Slides We use this slider for product videos and I love the counterbalance wheel vs. manually having to move the camera like some of the cheaper sliders do. It's easy to pack up with the included carrying case and it's nice to have the extension arms if we are looking for a longer pan/slide but we mainly use the standard arms. Build quality is excellent overall and expected as this price range. There isn't much plastic on this, it's mostly carbon fiber or metal pieces.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect Slider I research a lot of sliders before buying this one. I was looking for a slider that would be easy from anyone to use without practice. I also wanted something that would be less affected by the environment. It came down to this and a Kessler Slider. This one was priced better and had more to offer. It included the extension rails, extra counterweight and adjustable feet; so I bought the Shark. After receiving it, I was very please with how easy it was to use out of the box. I immediately was about to set silky smooth shots. The units comes into a nicely padded bag and has everything I need in a slider. I mount the short unit on a single small tripod and the full length unit on a pair or use a light stand. I highly recommend this product and feel I will not ever need to buy another slider.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Well-constructed, smooth operation This slider is nicely made - quality manufacture, and the movement of the camera is very smooth (assuming you drive it well) thanks to the belt and fly-wheel. The extension rod connectors are also well-made and designed to last.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from sending it back for a replacement The overall design concept is great, but mine has two issues that I struggled with today at a shoot: 1. The baseplate that slides along the tubes binds where it travels over the cheeseplate that provides a tripod connection. Its seems as if the tubes are pinching the wheels on the baseplate. 2. Although all the reviews I read claim the junction for the extension tubes is smooth and flawless, the baseplate feels stuck at times when rolling over the junction. These issues messed up a number of shots today, and I was trying to avoid these two areas of the rails. It just doesn't make sense to struggle with it, but I'm willing to give this slider another try. Hopefully the replacement will be as good as others say it is. Until I receive a good one I cannot recommend this.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from almost perfect Overall I am pleased with this slider. Build quality is very nice, and the option to extend the length comes in handy. The place where the tubes come together (for extending) is not as smooth on mine as others have reported, and I DO notice a slight bump when the slider crosses over the seam. That feature was a major selling point for me, so I'm a bit disappointed that it isn't perfect...but most of the time I can work around it. BTW, I added the optional second counter weight, which I think helps with larger cameras. I have difficulty supporting the slider at its widest extended range. I have tried two tripods, and heavy duty light stands, but it is very difficult to get the slider perfectly level. A Dana Dolly is far more stable and faster to work with, but very large, bulky, heavy and more expensive. For smaller slider moves, the Shark SI slider is pretty good.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Almost perfect...but not quite I purchased the bundle version with the extension tubes that allow making the slider longer. All the video reviews I've seen state there is no bump or hesitation when the slider travels over the connection between the tubes. However, I can feel and hear a bump when it hits the seam and I can see the bump in my footage. Also, there is a lot of rolling noise of the wheels as they travel along the tubes. Lastly, the slider has some sort of drag when it travels over one section of the tubes. I looked to see if something was dragging or rubbing, but I don't see anything. I can only assume the tubes are not perfectly parallel, which is causing some sort of binding. Everyone else seems perfectly happy with theirs, so maybe I got a bad one. On a good note, the counter weight definitely helps for gradual starts and stops. The overall build quality seems quite good, so I suspect this will hold up to a lot of use. I will put some more hours on this before deciding if its a keeper or not.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very smooth slider This slider is very smooth and the flywheel does a great job of helping to stabilize your dolly movements. I marked it down one star because one of the knurled screws that tighten down the adjustable legs came bent. However their customer support was excellent. One call and, believe it or not, the phone was answered by a human and a replacement was in the mail the next day. Also the carbon fiber rails are not perfectly parallel. They measure almost .080 inch wider at the end with the flywheel. I first noticed it after I adjusted the rollers on the slider carriage so that the rollers were snug against the insides of the rails. Then when rolling the carriage without the flywheel attached I was able to detect a difference in drag pressure needed to move the carriage. Also when i tried moving the slider carriage with the locking screw just barely loosened and it created enough drag to actually stop the carriage from sliding part way through its travel when it reached the wider part of the slider rails. As a work around, make sure the carriage locking screw is backed out a bit further, loosen the slider carriage adjustment slightly and make sure the flywheel is installed. Then the out of parallel condition is barely noticeable. I haven't called to see what tolerance level they deem acceptable but it is usable. Maybe I'm just being a bit OCD but for the price I would expect the slider combo to be flawless. It does come with a very nice carrying case and very well packaged. BTW - one feature they don't advertise - you can just use the extension rails by themselves if you like a shorter slider travel. You would, of course, need to shorten the belt. With only the extension rails you get 14 of travel. With the standard rails you get 19 3/4 of travel and with both the standard and the extensions you get 42. Thus, making it quite a versatile slider combo.
